"The missile was just a precaution. You can hardly blame us, Wanda."
"Oh, I think I can. This will be your only warning: stay out of my home. You don't bother me, I don't bother you."

The Attack on Wanda Maximoff was an attempt by S.W.O.R.D. to kill Wanda Maximoff, hoping it would end her control over Westview.

Background[]

"Our initial theory had Wanda Maximoff as one of many victims. We now know she is the principal victimizer."

Wanda Maximoff inadvertently casts a spell on Westview

In her grief from the death of Vision at the hands of Thanos,[2] Wanda Maximoff cast a spell on Westview, creating a home for herself and a recreated Vision to live together in while the town was brainwashed into acting as though they lived in a sitcom reality.[3] This caught the attention of the FBI, who sent Jimmy Woo to investigate. The FBI requested drones from S.W.O.R.D., so Monica Rambeau was sent to deliver them. While there, however, Rambeau was sucked into the sitcom reality[1] and given the alias "Geraldine."[4]

As a response, S.W.O.R.D. arrived and set up a response base to study the anomaly, calling in experts in many fields, including Darcy Lewis. Lewis discovered that Westview was broadcasting a sitcom of its events, and S.W.O.R.D. began identifying its residents. Lewis and Woo eventually found Rambeau, and tried to contact Maximoff,[1] although this proved impossible as Maximoff prevented it from occurring.[4]

S.W.O.R.D. continued to attempt to contact Maximoff, such as by sending in agent Franklin, although these attempts also failed.[1] Within Westview, Maximoff had gotten pregnant, and "Geraldine" helped her deliver her twins. Maximoff mentioned to "Geraldine" that she had a twin brother, causing Rambeau to remember the outside world. She mentioned that Maximoff's brother was killed by Ultron, causing Maximoff to realize that Rambeau did not belong in Westview.[5] Maximoff kicked Rambeau out, and Rambeau told S.W.O.R.D. that Maximoff was responsible for what was happening to Westview.[1] Rambeau realized that Maximoff was not creating new things, but rather warping reality to fit the time period of the sitcom, causing S.W.O.R.D. to realize that sending in technology from the 1980s would cause the drone to be able to safely send information to S.W.O.R.D., which every previous drone had failed to do.[6]

Under Tyler Hayward's command, S.W.O.R.D. sent a drone from the 1980s into Westview and found Wanda Maximoff's house. The Maximoff family's dog, Sparky, began barking, so Maximoff and her two sons, Tommy and Billy Maximoff, ran outside to see the drone. Maximoff ensured that the drone was not in the broadcast of the sitcom, causing Darcy Lewis to realize that Maximoff was in fact controlling the broadcast. Monica Rambeau attempted to communicate with Maximoff, although Maximoff instead threatened the drone. Hayward ordered Agent Monti to fire at Maximoff, despite Rambeau believing the drone to not be armed. Maximoff deactivated the drone and brought it outside of Westview, where she confronted S.W.O.R.D., who had all aimed their weapons at her.

She threw the drone back at them while Hayward tried to explain himself. However, Maximoff warned S.W.O.R.D. to leave her alone, lest she retaliate. Hayward explained that she had taken an entire town hostage, and Rambeau confronted Maximoff, who threatened her. She insisted that Rambeau was an ally, and explained that Maximoff likely knew that. Maximoff explained that she had what she wanted, and declared her intention not to allow anyone to take it from her. She then controlled the S.W.O.R.D. agents and made them aim their weapons at Hayward and returned to Westview, freeing the agents from her control.[6]

Aftermath[]

"Maximoff was never gonna negotiate with us. We take her out, this whole nightmare ends."
"We don't know that. We actually have no idea what will happen in there or out here if Wanda dies."
Tyler Hayward and Monica Rambeau[src]

The confrontation caused Monica Rambeau, Jimmy Woo and Darcy Lewis to distrust Tyler Hayward, so the three planned to protect Maximoff on their own. They left the S.W.O.R.D. Response Base, although Lewis stayed behind to gather information about Tyler Hayward and Project Cataract. While exploring the outskirts of Westview, Vision attempted to leave Westview, although he discovered that this was impossible. This caused Maximoff to expand the borders of her magic, trapping many S.W.O.R.D. agents within the Hex, turning them into circus performers, including Lewis.[7]

Tension built between S.W.O.R.D. and Maximoff as S.W.O.R.D. sent White Vision, the result of Cataract,[3] into Westview to destroy Maximoff and Vision. While Vision fought White Vision, Agatha Harkness revealed to Maximoff that her spell had caused a significant amount of pain for the citizens of Westview, so she opened her magic's borders so they could escape. However, this also allowed S.W.O.R.D. to send the military in. While Vision had a philosophical conversation with White Vision about which one was the real Vision and Maximoff fought Harkness, Billy and Tommy Maximoff fought the S.W.O.R.D. agents, quickly disarming them. Monica Rambeau stopped Hayward from shooting the twins, and Lewis managed to capture Hayward until he could be arrested.[8]
