The Attack on Ultimo was a confrontation between the Avengers and Ultimo, a robot created by Hydra.
Background[]
Looking to keep the world safe, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner created an Artificial Intelligence which they called Ultron. However, in his goal of protecting the Earth, Ultron determined that the only way to do so was to protect humanity. He decided to create a large machine to lift Novi Grad, the capital city of Sokovia into the sky and cause it to plummet back to Earth, killing all of humanity. The Avengers managed to defeat Ultron by breaking up the city into many small pieces. While the Avengers saved as many people as possible, plenty of lives were still lost, including that of Pietro Maximoff, the twin brother of Wanda Maximoff.[4]
Hydra later stole parts that made up Ultron's many sentries and began working on their own project, designing a large robot called Ultimo, which could be controlled remotely.[3]
Attack[]
Hydra activated their Ultimo robot, and made it attack a small village in Ukraine. The Avengers heard about the attack, and rushed to the Ukraine to stop the robot. They were at first caught off guard by Ultimo's size, but quickly adjusted as they attacked. James Rhodes and Wanda Maximoff were quickly injured, as Steve Rogers worked on a plan.
Rogers had Sam Wilson determine that the robot was being controlled remotely, rather than by Artificial Intelligence. Wilson and Natasha Romanoff left to deal with the Hydra agents controlling it, while Vision destroyed the camera providing video feed to Hydra. While Romanoff and Wilson fought the soldiers, Vision and Rhodes fired at Ultimo, while Maximoff used her powers to destroy the robot, channeling her anger at Ultron regarding her brother's death.[3]
Aftermath[]
The Avengers congratulated each other on their victory, as Steve Rogers expressed pride.[3] Satisfied the team could work together, Rogers later brought them on a mission to retrieve who they believed to be Bucky Barnes, but was in fact Brock Rumlow.[5] The team fought Rumlow, but Wanda Maximoff accidentally caused several people to die from Rumlow's suicide act, prompting debate about the Avengers being allowed to operate on their own.[6]
