- "Can we at least understand your reason for sending Triton to his death?"
- ―Maximus to Black Bolt[src]
The Attack on Triton was an assassination attempt executed by the Attilan Royal Guard, acting on clandestine orders from Maximus Boltagon, and aimed at eliminating Triton.
Background[]
As a result of a Terrigen contamination in Earth's water supply, many Inhumans living on Earth were infected with Terrigen and acquired superhuman abilities.[2] Attilan's King, Black Bolt, was aware of the Inhuman Outbreak. Wanting to keep all the Inhumans of Earth safe, he gave Triton orders to retrieve any Inhumans on Earth, among which was Jane. Black Bolt did not let anyone else know of Triton's orders.
However, Black Bolt's brother Maximus, the Prince of Attilan, was also aware of the events and the new Inhumans emerging and was also secretly planning to overthrow the Inhuman Royal Family. Therefore, he secretly sent soldiers to hunt and execute Triton.[3]
Attack[]
Prior to the attack, Jane was already on the run from Maximus' forces. Stumbling into the jungle, she met Triton. He explained her status as an Inhuman and offered sanctuary on Attilan. However, before he could summon Lockjaw, Maximus' forces arrived.
Triton and Jane then ran, with a scared Jane separating from Triton. Though Triton tried to help her, she was shot by Hunter One. Triton then fled towards the ocean, Maximus' forces in pursuit. Though he was able to make it, he was shot in the stomach and fell into the ocean.[3]
Aftermath[]
Triton's disappearance was sensed by Duodon, who showcased the attack during the Inhuman Royal Family's dinner. Maximus, shocked at Triton's actions, decided to begin his revolution.[3]
However, contrary to what Maximus believed, Triton had not died during the attack. Indeed, Black Bolt and Triton had anticipated such an attack on Triton and devised a plan according to which Triton should hide and wait for reinforcements. Triton's survival would eventually be revealed to the rest of the Inhuman Royal Family during their exile, and later to the rest of Attilan.[4]
