The Attack on New Asgard was an assault on New Asgard, orchestrated by Gorr the God Butcher, with an intention to lure Thor and obtain the Stormbreaker.
Background[]
Gorr wandered over his planet and being in the brink of death, came across his god Rapu, who instead of rewarding his worship as his dogma promised, was met with nothing but mockery about his suffering and the death of his daughter. He gained access to All-Black the Necrosword, that possessed him and made him took the goal of eradicating all deities across the universe, by finding a way to access Eternity with the Bifrost Bridge. In the meantime, Gorr would go around the universe slaying gods and eventually targeted New Asgard, as they had access to the Bifrost, along with other gods Gorr wanted to kill.
Meanwhile, Thor learned of Gorr's plan by Lady Sif who had fought Gorr earlier. This lead them to rush themselves to New Asgard to help, and help Sif recover from her arm being cut off by Gorr.[2]
Attack[]
At night, Gorr emerged from the Shadow Realm and looked onto the unsuspecting city of New Asgard, before unleashing a large group of Shadow Monsters. The chaos caused King Valkyrie, the members of the Einherjar and the new hero Mighty Thor to fight with the citizens against the Monsters.
Thor, Korg, and the wounded Lady Sif arrived in the middle of the city, and while Sif was taken to safety, Thor joined the fight with Stormbreaker, where he caught a glimpse of Mjølnir in the battle. Confused and happy, Thor made his way across the battlefield and tried to reclaim the hammer, only for it to instead fly to Mighty Thor. Thor watched as the mysterious woman used Mjølnir's new ability to splinter itself into fragments to take down multiple Monsters. Wanting to know who she was, Thor questioned her, even putting on a more ornate armor. Eventually, Mighty Thor retracted her helmet, revealing herself as Thor's ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster. Now flustered, Thor ended up wandering into an open space, where Gorr was waiting, and teleported closer, pinning Thor onto a car. However, Gorr recognized Stormbreaker, as Thor asked if he was wielding All-Black the Necrosword telling how he was told the story of it as a kid. Wanting to now grab the weapon, Gorr stated that he should know how it feels to be stabbed by it, however, Gorr realized that he was now being cornered by Thor's allies, and now realized that he needs to instead lure the weapon to him instead, and teleported away.
Gorr then used numerous Shadow Monsters to steal Asgardian Kids from their homes and contain them in a giant cage outside of New Asgard. However, both Thor and Mighty Thor charged at Gorr and the Cage. However, Gorr used the shadows to teleport them away from the heroes, now having a bargaining chip against them.[2]
Aftermath[]
The denizens of New Asgard were be summoned to the capital building in a ruckus over the attack and the now missing children. Thor tried to uplift the New Asgardians spirits and find the kids through the Bifrost Bridge, but ended up with nothing, so the citizens were requested by Valkyrie to return home. Axl, Heimdall's son, used his powers to contact Thor and show him where he and the other kids were trapped in the Shadow Realm, making Thor, Jane Foster, Korg, and Valkyrie to concoct a plan to find a way into the Shadow Realm, knowing that Gorr's powers were connected to it.
Thor and Valkyrie agreed that their best option was to ask for additional help from the other gods in Omnipotence City, and find a way to free the kids and stop Gorr's rampage, and turning a tour guide vehicle, the Aegir into a chariot for the team pulled by Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, in order to serve as a conduit for the Bifrost that Stormbreaker created.[2]
