"You abandoned them. Because of you, the Hand has won. After they raised you, after they gave you everything you are, you let them die."

The Attack on K'un-Lun was an offense against the Order of the Crane Mother by the Hand, which was possible when Danny Rand left and K'un-Lun unguarded.

Background[]

"The way to K'un-Lun is open, and you are not there to protect it."

Due to Harold Meachum's assassination attempt on Wendell and Heather Rand, Danny Rand ended up stranded all alone when Rand Enterprises Private Jet crushed in Himalayas. Rand was found by Chodak and Tashi who brought the child to K'un-Lun, introducing him to the Order of the Crane Mother and Lei Kung, who took Rand in as his adoptive son.[2] Being raised by the Order, Rand found out about the position of the Iron Fist, a sworn defender of K'un-Lun, whose purpose was to defeat the Hand once and for all. Rand desperately sought to become the next Iron Fist, so he underwent a grueling trial after grueling trial to prove himself worthy of the title.[3]

As his last trial, Rand faced Davos in a ceremonial duel, in which Rand emerged victorious and was proclaimed to be the next Iron Fist by Lei Kung.[4] Rand was sent to the Cave of the Dragon where he faced Shou-Lao in an ultimate trial and plunged his fist into the dragon's molten heart. Having finally become the Iron Fist, Rand stood guard at the gates of K'un-Lun to protect the city from any outside force, however, he felt unsatisfied that becoming the Iron Fist did not give him the clarity he sought. One day, Rand spotted a hawk flying in the distance and realized that the passage to the outside world was open once again. Rand made a decision to abandon his position and return home to New York City to find the answers he needed, as well as his purpose.[5]

Meanwhile, the Hand continued their quest to achieve true immortality and for that, they sought the Black Sky, an ultimate weapon in a human form that the Hand believed to be their destined salvation. They found out that Elektra was the Black Sky but she had no intention of joining the Hand and ended up being killed by Nobu Yoshioka in a battle.[6] On Alexandra Reid's orders, Elektra's body was exhumed from her grave and brought to her, as Reid used the last remnants of the Resurrection Elixir on her. Brought back to life, Elektra lost all memories of her past life and Reid made her believe that her purpose was to serve the Hand, making her Reid's loyal warrior.[7]

With K'un-Lun left unguarded by Iron Fist, Elektra led a group of Hand warriors through the passages in an attack on the Order of the Crane Mother.[8] The Order monks valiantly fought back but the Hand had slaughtered dozens of them, which led to the passage to K'un-Lun disappearing and the city was cut off from the world.[1]

Danny Rand discovers that K'un-Lun was gone

"And what is it that you want?"
"To return to K'un-Lun."
"That's impossible. You destroyed it. I saw."
"You saw what you wanted to see."

Following a confrontation with Harold Meachum, Danny Rand decided to leave New York City and return to K'un-Lun, so he could explain his disappearance to Lei Kung and complete his training. Together with Colleen Wing, Rand traveled to the Himalayas but upon reaching the passage, he saw the corpses of the Order of the Crane Mother and the Hand weapons near them. He then saw that the passage to K'un-Lun had disappeared, coming to a terrifying realization that K'un-Lun was lost to the Hand because he failed his duty as its sworn protector.[1] Rand and Wing then traveled across the world in their pursuit of the Hand to find out what happened to the city, but every lead they could find turned out to be a dead end.

Arriving in Cambodia, Rand and Wing were able to reach Shaft who had the information on the Hand, however, he was targeted and killed by Elektra. Shaft was able to tell Rand that he needed to return to New York City before his death, as the Hand was planning to destroy the city for dragon bones they needed.[9] Rand allied himself with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Daredevil who also opposed the Hand, but the situation became complicated when they found out that the Hand needed him to reach the bones.[10] They tried to keep Rand captive away from the Hand, but Elektra was able to kidnap him and used his Iron Fist to destroy the wall protecting the bones.[8] In a final battle against the Hand, the Defenders managed to save the city and Rand took over protection of New York when Murdock was believed to be dead.[11]

Meanwhile, Davos who had been sent away by Lei Kung to bring Rand back but failed, blamed him for what happened to K'un-Lun and allied with Joy Meachum to enact his revenge.[1] Davos sought to steal the Iron Fist from Rand and using Meachum's resources and the help of Mary Walker, he was able to perform a ritual on Rand and rid him of his power.[12] Now that he had the power, Davos decided to do succeed where Rand failed and eradicate New York from criminals by going on a killing spree against the triads, causing havoc all across the city.[13] Rand and Wing fought back to stop Davos and managed to perform the ritual once again, so Wing could take the Iron Fist from Davos, as Rand decided that she deserved it more than him.[14]
