The Attack on Castle de Krake was an attack on HYDRA's base of operations to put an end to the Red Skull's plans.
Background[]
- "The Red Skull has taken cover here, at Castle de Krake in the Black Forest."
"No wonder HYDRA targeted Rogers. You'd need the Stomper to get close." - ―Peggy Carter and John Flynn[src]
While serving for the Third Reich, the Red Skull intended to betray Adolf Hitler and conquer the world for himself. Red Skull learned of the legendary interdimensional entity, that he dubbed the "Champion of HYDRA". In order to take control over it, he obtained the Tesseract that was able to open the portal and unleash the Champion. However, both the Tesseract and Arnim Zola ended up captured by the SSR, due to Peggy Carter's interference.
After liberating Bucky Barnes and other US soldiers captured by HYDRA, Carter founded the Howling Commandos to fight HYDRA. They were joined by Steve Rogers who used the battle armor, powered by the Tesseract. Carter, Rogers and the Commandos raided multiple HYDRA facilities, turning the tides of war in Allies' favor.
The Red Skull then turned against the Third Reich and ordered his men to retrieve the Tesseract from Rogers at all costs. HYDRA organized a trap at the Schnellzug EB912 train, luring the Commandos into a train filled with explosives. The train with Rogers inside collapsed, leading HYDRA to capture him and retrieve the Tesseract from his armor. Carter managed to extract the information about the Red Skull's plans from Zola and organized a mission to infiltrate the Castle de Krake and put an end to HYDRA's operations once and for all.[1]
Attack[]
- "Should we not have a plan?"
"Who needs a plan? I have a shield." - ―Howard Stark and Captain Carter[src]
Together with the Howling Commandos and Howard Stark, Captain Carter headed to the Castle de Krake in Germany. Carter umped over one of the walls to open the main door for the others after defeating several HYDRA soldiers standing on guard. As the Commandos covered her with fire, Carter took down all soldiers that opposed her at the castle's entrance. After suppressing HYDRA's resistance, the group split, as Carter and Stark went to confront the Red Skull, while he was conducting an experiment with the Tesseract.
Bucky Barnes and the Commandos found out that Steve Rogers was alive and held prisoner at the castle. They liberated Rogers and helped him to get back inside his armor, although the generator had a limited amount of power. Meanwhile, Carter and Stark witnessed the Red Skull unleashing the Champion of HYDRA, however, he failed to take control over it, which resulted in his death. Using her shield and a sword, Carter confronted the Champion, while Stark was trying to figure out how to close the portal.
As Stark had difficulties with closing the portal, the Champion grabbed Carter and tried to kill her, only to be stopped by Rogers who assisted her. They were also joined by the Commandos who opened fire on the Champion, however, it emerged a roar that stunned Stark and the Commandos, so Rogers had to get them out of the castle for safety. The Champion was holding the portal open, so Carter decided to push it back to the wormhole, even though it meant entering the portal herself. Rogers tried to help her but his armor was left without power, so Carter had to do it on her own. Rogers exchanged with Carter his last words before she entered the portal and it closed.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "The war ended almost 70 years ago. You going to be okay?"
"Of course. We won the war." - ―Nick Fury and Captain Carter[src]
Almost seventy years later, S.H.I.E.L.D. obtained the Tesseract and conducted research at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility. They managed to activate the cube and free Captain Carter from the wormhole it created. Nick Fury and Clint Barton informed Carter that the World War II ended decades ago.[1]
