Multiverse Discovered
"He discovered that there were universes stacked on top of his own..."
The subject of this article comes from an alternate universe connecting to the main timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This universe is designated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki as "Super Soldier Peggy Carter".

"What you seek is just a legend."
"Then why do you try so hard to hide it."
Church Keeper and Johann Schmidt[src]

The Attack in Norway was a raid on the Castle Rock Tower in Tønsberg, carried out by HYDRA to secure the Tesseract.

Background[]

"The Tesseract was the jewel of Odin's treasure room. Fabled to hold the power to rewrite the very laws of physics and unlock doors across the universe."
Johann Schmidt[src]

Johann Schmidt, the leader of HYDRA, served for the Nazi Germany, although he always intended to betray the Third Reich and conquer the world for himself. During World War II, Schmidt became aware of an ancient creature from the cosmos that possessed enough power to destroy the world. Schmidt was obsessed with finding and taking control over the creature, hoping to use its power to conquer the world, despite the risks of destroying everything if he failed.

During his research, Schmidt learned of the Tesseract, an artifact that had the power to open a door to any place in the universe. Schmidt put all HYDRA resources to find the Tesseract until he heard about the church in Tønsberg, Norway where it could be hidden.[1]

Johann Schmidt secures the Tesseract

"Tønsberg, Norway. A real Christmas card of a town. Well, it was."
"Nazis were in Norway?"
"Close. HYDRA."
Howard Stark, John Flynn and Peggy Carter[src]

A HYDRA battalion led by Johann Schmidt raided Tønsberg and entered the Castle Rock Tower, taking the Church Keeper hostage. Schmidt then ordered his men to demolish the church door and arrived at the place personally to investigate the potential site of the Tesseract. Schmidt spoke to the Keeper, telling him about the legend he heard, although the Keeper kept insisting that the Tesseract was a mere legend. Schmidt, however, managed to discover a secret vault in the tomb's wall where the Tesseract was hidden. HYDRA soldiers then executed the Keeper, before Schmidt ordered them to destroy the church.[1]

Aftermath[]

Peggy, Howard and Flynn on SSR

Red Skull's plan is uncovered by the SSR

"If this reaches HYDRA high command, it's game over."
"I'm not risking one man, never mind a platoon, over a glorified battery."
Peggy Carter and John Flynn[src]

With the Tesseract finally in his possession, Johann Schmidt entrusted Arnim Zola with delivering it to Berlin. Schmidt intended to bring the cube to his headquarters where HYDRA could research it to find the way how to unleash the creature he wanted to control. The SSR found out about Schmidt's plans, however, John Flynn was skeptical about the Tesseract and refused to greenlight a mission to recover it.

WhatIf 0452

Arnim Zola is captured by Captain Carter

Without the support from both SSR and the United States Army, Carter decided to take upon herself to intercept the Tesseract. Armed with the vibranium shield, Carter tracked down the HYDRA escort unit, in Berlin and ambushed it, defeating all HYDRA soldiers. As a result, Zola was captured and taken in custody by the SSR, as Howard Stark was able to conduct his research on the Tesseract.[1]
