The Attack in Norway was a raid planned by Red Skull on the holding place of the Tesseract.

The Space Stone, one of the powerful Infinity Stones, was hidden by Odin on Earth. The stone and its container, the Tesseract, were eventually placed in a church in the village of Tønsberg. Legends on its whereabouts were shared for centuries.

On his quest for power, Johann Schmidt allied himself with Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. As the leader of HYDRA, Schmidt proceeded with his plans to find old relics, one of them being the Tesseract. Pursuing a lead on its whereabouts, Schmidt finally discovered that the Tesseract was located in Castle Rock Tower.[1]

Red Skull lead his organization, HYDRA, to Tønsberg, Norway, the supposed location of the Tesseract, it had been left there by Odin hundreds of years ago.

The forces of HYDRA massacred the town, and when Red Skull arrived at the Castle Rock Tower, he destroyed the wall, killing Jan. Inside the tower he met the Church Keeper, He told Schmidt that the Tesseract wasn't here, but after he said this Schmidt discovered a carving of Yggdrasil, and inside he found Tesseract, hidden.[1]

The destruction of the tower and the massacre in the village were eventually heard by the Strategic Scientific Reserve. Meanwhile, Schmidt tasked HYDRA's scientist Arnim Zola with experimenting with the Tesseract to harness its energy and turn it into weapons so he could fulfil his world conquest goal.[1]
