- "Schmidt sent out a force to Azzano. Two hundred men went up against him and less than fifty returned. Your audience contained what was left of the 107th. The rest were killed or captured."
- ―Peggy Carter to Steve Rogers[src]
The Attack at Azzano was one of the many battles during World War II. Bucky Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones and the rest of their unit were overwhelmed by a battalion of HYDRA soldiers sent by Johann Schmidt, and most members of the 107th Infantry Regiment and other regiments were either killed or captured.
Background[]
- "Did you get your orders?"
"The 107th. Sergeant James Barnes, shipping out for England first thing tomorrow." - ―Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes[src]
As World War II progressed, Johann Schmidt and HYDRA began to separate themselves from the Third Reich. When Adolf Hitler had enough of Schmidt's disobedience, he sent Schneider, Hutter and Roeder to the HYDRA Headquarters to confront him. Schmidt killed them with his new Tesseract powered HYDRA Cannon.[1]
Battle[]
- "Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43."
- ―Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson[src]
Bucky Barnes, Gabe Jones and Dum Dum Dugan, among other members of the 107th Infantry Regiment, were assigned to Azzano where they were battling Wehrmacht soldiers when a battalion of HYDRA soldiers sent by Johann Schmidt arrived. One of the Landkreuzers fired upon the Wehrmacht soldiers, completely wiping them out. The tank then turned its cannon on the American soldiers and fired on them. Outmatched, the soldiers who survived the attack were forced to surrender and were taken prisoner.[3]
Aftermath[]
- "Production and the work here is progressing on schedule, even with components of this size."
"Increase the output by sixty percent. And speak with our other facilities to do the same."
"But these prisoners, I'm not sure they have the strength."
"Then use up what strength they have left, Doctor. There are always more workers." - ―Arnim Zola and Johann Schmidt[src]
The prisoners were taken to HYDRA Base Camp C3 and forced to work in the factory making Tesseract powered weapons. Captain America infiltrated the facility and liberated the prisoners. Captain America put together a team consisting of the people who had been captured, and they turned the tide of the war. They captured Arnim Zola, but lost Bucky Barnes in the process. With information gathered by Zola, Captain America and his team defeated HYDRA.[1]
