Early in Grant Ward's adult years, he found himself in juvenile detention because he committed arson on his house. John Garrett visited him and offered a chance to come with him, which Ward took. Garrett took him out to the middle of the wilderness and taught him a few skills before leaving him for four months with no explanation. Garrett returned and explained to Ward that he was a member of HYDRA and that he was going to teach him how to become a spy. Over the next five years, Ward trained in the wilderness until Garrett told him he was accepted into S.H.I.E.L.D.. Before they left, Garrett ordered Ward to kill his dog, Buddy. Over many more years, Ward and Garrett both successfully infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. without any suspicion.
Amidst the HYDRA Uprising, a signal was sent to all HYDRA agents. S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities everywhere were in chaos, including the Hub and Academy of Science and Technology. Victoria Hand surrounded herself with five agents she knew were loyal and went out searching for both HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D. members. She came across Antoine Triplett and Jemma Simmons. She posed as HYDRA and told the two agents to vow loyalty or die. Triplett then attacked, saying he would never. Hand then knew she could trust them. She then diverted the Bus to the Hub and sent two S.H.I.E.L.D. UAV's to destroy John Garrett's S.H.I.E.L.D. Jump Jet because she believed Phil Coulson was an enemy. Garrett was able to destroy the UAV's with the help of Coulson and boarded the Bus. This made Coulson believe that hand was the Clairvoyant.
The Bus landed at the Hub and Coulson's Team was able to escape before her men managed to get on the plane. Coulson, Leo Fitz, Melinda May, and Garrett went to the control room while Skye and Grant Ward prepared to blow up the processing room. Garrett argued with Coulson that they should kill Hand, but he refused. Garrett started to state reasons why Hand should be killed, including that Raina and Coulson were both subjected to the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine by the Clairvoyant. This fact was never revealed by Coulson, causing him to realize that Garrett was the Clairvoyant. Knowing he was caught, Garrett confirmed it as guards surrounded them.
Before the guards could execute their orders to kill them, Skye and Ward blew up the processing room which allowed enough of a distraction to gain an advantage. During the ensuing battle, Fitz handed Coulson the Thunderstick, which he used to defeat Garrett. Hand then stormed the room and told Coulson that she heard the argument from outside. Garrett and his agents were arrested. However, Ward requested to join Hand in transporting Garrett to the Fridge, claiming that Garrett was his S.O. and he'd like to be the one to lock the key to his cell. She agreed not knowing that actually Ward was a HYDRA agent.
Once airborne, Victoria Hand mocked John Garrett and asked Grant Ward if he'd like to kill the true Clairvoyant. Ward silently stood up and loaded his gun, however, Ward immediately shot and killed Jacobson and Chaimson, before turning the gun on Hand and shooting her three times, killing her. He then freed Garrett and they escaped.
Eventually, Grant Ward and John Garrett arrived at the Fridge in order to raid it for its hidden weaponry. Hand gave specific orders to its guardians that no one was to enter the facility without her being there; Ward did not know this in advance and tried to talk the guards into allowing him and Garrett entry. Ultimately, the guards defied her orders when Kaminsky fired upon them from his S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicopter.
