"Did you think we would forget? Look at me, murderer! Where did you get this weapon?"
"You savages didn't deserve it. Whoa, mercy, King! Mercy!"
"Every breath you take is mercy from me!"

The Arrest of Ulysses Klaue was the successful capture of the international fugitive and arms dealer Ulysses Klaue by the combined forces of Black Panther, Nakia, Okoye, and Everett Ross in Busan, South Korea.

Background[]

"Klaue has escaped our pursuits for almost thirty years. Not capturing him is perhaps my father's greatest regret."
T'Challa[src]

When a certain robbery became public knowledge, Ulysses Klaue resurfaced back on Wakanda's radar, and due to the vibranium used in the Battle of Sokovia traced back to him,[2] Shuri was given information that Klaue was going to Busan, South Korea to negotiate a deal for the vibranium artifact with an unknown American buyer.[1]

T'Challa and the Dora Milaje arrive

Ulysses Klaue traveled to Busan to trade the Wakandan artifact with an unknown buyer for a handful of diamonds. The buyer turned out to be CIA operative Everett Ross. Although the deal started out smooth, it was soon sabotaged by the presence of the Dora Milaje. Realizing the deal was a set-up, Klaue opened fire on Ross, who used the briefcase of diamonds as a shield to deflect the shots.

As he made his escape, he was cornered by Black Panther. Klaue responded by activating his prosthetic arm's sonic cannon, firing it at the Wakandan king, only for him to use a table as cover. Having caused money to explode across the casino, he made a comedic remark about how he 'made it rain', and then fled the scene via SUV.[1]

While Ulysses Klaue got into his car and attempted to escape, T'Challa soon recovered from the sonic blast and chased after Klaue. Klaue's gang split up to try and confuse the Wakandans. Once Okoye and Nakia caught up to him, he decided to hang from the side of the SUV and used his prosthetic arm to fire a sonic blast at their vibranium car, completely shattering it until only metal shards and the driver's seat were left.

Eventually, T'Challa caught up and caused Klaue to exit his vehicle. As he prepared to execute Klaue where he stood, he was reminded by Nakia and Okoye that he was seen doing it in the public eye. Klaue further mocked T'Challa by calling the Wakandans savages, hoping to gain a reaction from him. T'Challa was ready to kill Klaue, however, T'Challa spared Klaue, and reluctantly handed him over to Everett Ross and the CIA.[1]

Aftermath[]

Ulysses Klaue interrogated by Everett Ross

"T'Challa told me to my face right here, that he would bring Klaue back. Did he do it?"
"He had him, and N'Jadaka stole him from our–"
"I don't care! Klaue stole from us!"

Ulysses Klaue was apprehended by CIA and taken to the black site in Seoul for an interrogation. With T'Challa, Nakia, and Okoye present, Everett Ross interrogated Klaue who told him about Wakanda and its advanced vibranium-based technology, while Ross was certain that Wakanda was the third world country. During the interrogation, the facility was attacked by Erik Killmonger and Klaue's associates who opened fire on CIA agents and broke Klaue out of the custody. During the attack, Ross was heavily wounded while protecting Nakia from Killmonger's bullet, so T'Challa made a decision to bring Ross to Wakanda for a treatment.

Escaping from CIA, Klaue prepared to fly back to Johannesburg but refused Killmonger's request to bring him to Wakanda due to his friction with T'Challa. Killmonger then betrayed Klaue and attacked him, as well as Limbani and Linda, revealing himself to be a Wakandan to Klaue. After killing Klaue, Killmonger brought his body to Wakandan border, presenting it to the Border Tribe, demanding an audience with the Golden Tribe, before challenging T'Challa to a duel for the Wakandan throne.[1]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The costumes for the scenes at Jagalchi Market Casino were designed without knowing the context of the scene. Unsure of whether T'Challa, Nakia, and Okoye were meant to be undercover during the scene, Anthony Francisco designed multiple costumes with varying amounts of influence from African and other cultures and from science fiction armors.[4]
