On December 10, 2020, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, Kevin Feige announced that an Armor Wars television series was in development for Disney+ with Don Cheadle set to reprise his Marvel Cinematic Universe role of James Rhodes/War Machine in the series.[2]

On February 3, 2021, Don Cheadle revealed in an interview that the death of Tony Stark would play a major role in the series.[8] That same day, Cheadle revealed in another interview that the series would start filming in a couple of months.[9]

On August 20, 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Yassir Lester had been tapped to serve as the head writer of the series.[1]
