Apex was a gamma-irradiated creature inadvertently created by Bruce Banner trying to infuse himself with more gamma radiation in an attempt to cure himself of Hulk. The first of the Gamma Beasts, Apex spawned countless more Beasts, starting the Gamma War, and managed to defeat the original Avengers, but was defeated by the new lineup led by Sam Wilson and retreated, along with the Beasts, to the Arctic.
Ten years after the war, Apex emerged from its slumber and rallied the Gamma Beasts to invade the world again, it fought the Avengers again, though this time, it managed to win. However, it was soon confronted by Banner, who used a gamma nuke to turn himself into Mega-Hulk and intended to replace Apex as leader of the Gamma Beasts. As they fought, Apex gained the upper hand on Mega-Hulk but Captain America managed to distract Apex by firing the last round of the Mighty Avenger, which allowed Mega-Hulk to reverse the tide of the battle and kill Apex with a blast of Gamma Radiation, becoming the new Apex himself.
Biography[]
Creation and the Gamma War[]
When Bruce Banner transformed at sea while in the company of his friend Sam Wilson and his sister, he decided to retreat to his lab and cure himself of Hulk in an act of desperation by infusing himself with more gamma radiation. However, the increased exposure to Gamma Radiation instead caused Banner to transform into Hulk while also resulting in the creation of a creature that separated from him. Hulk reverted back to Banner, who witnessed as the new monster, now dubbed as Apex, escaped and proceeded to spawn several more monsters, which were dubbed Gamma Beasts, starting the Gamma War.
Apex and his spawn managed to defeat the original Avengers, but Sam Wilson took up the mantle of Captain America and led a new lineup of Avengers to fight the Gamma Beasts. Using their own mechanized battle suits, the Avengers were successful in chasing away the Gamma Beasts, ending the Gamma War. Apex and the beasts retreated to the Arctic, where they slumbered to recover until they would eventually reawaken.
