―Anatoly Ranskahov to Vladimir Ranskahov[src]

Seeking to forge a name for themsevles in the criminal underworld, the Ranskahovs allied with Wilson Fisk to work on the Steel Serpent distribution. As their operations were at risk because of the man in the mask, Anatoly yearned for a closer cooperation with Fisk, although Vladimir opposed to the idea. However, Anatoly accidentally embarassed Fisk in front of Vanessa Marianna, which prompted Fisk to murder Anatoly and use his death to destroy the Russian Mafia.

Anatoly and his brother at Utkin Prison

Living in Russia, Anatoly Ranskahov and his brother Vladimir were imprisoned at the Utkin Prison in Siberia. For the next three years, they were subjected to torture, as their cellmates kept dying, and Anatoly said that Vladimir will soon remain the last. However, Vladimir made a weapon out of Alexei's ribs, while Anatoly was being tortured and said that they will use it to escape. Anatoly asked will they return to Moscow after their escape, Vladimir replied that it was not an option, and they must set their sights to the United States of America to make a new life there.[7]

Working for Wilson Fisk[]

The Vigilante Problem[]

"We're in the process of negotiating with Mr. Prohaszka."
"Negotiating? Maybe we handle our problems same way. Sit down with this man in black, break bread."
James Wesley and Anatoly Ranskahov[src]

Anatoly and Vladimir left Russia and moved to New York City, where they became a part of a criminal organization, led by Wilson Fisk. Being a leaders of the Russian Mafia in New York, Anatoly and Vladimir would handle the Steel Serpent distribution and human trafficking among other operations with Fisk and his associates. However, Anatoly and Vladimir were informed that during the attempt to smuggle a group of young women, the Russian Mafia and Turk Barrett were attacked by the masked vigilante who single-handedly liberated the women.

Anatoly and Vladimir later arrived on a meeting with Madame Gao, Nobu Yoshioka, and Leland Owlsley, awaiting Fisk's arrival to report about the situation. Owlsley would complain about the cold and being confused at what Gao was saying, he asked Yoshioka for translation, but Anatoly reminded him that Yoshioka was Japanese, not Chinese. Later, James Wesley joined them, informing his associates that Fisk was unable to attend the meeting, much to the Ranskahovs' frustration but when they were about to leave, Wesley asked them about the fiasco at the docks. The Ranskahovs told Wesley that their operation was disrupted because of the lone vigilante which made Owlsley laugh, before Anatoly confronted him.

Welsey asked for more information about the vigilante, and the Ranskahovs explained that he ambushed Barrett and the others before letting the women go. Anatoly confirmed that the vigilante defeated four armed men with bare hands, to which Wesley remarked that Fisk would be displeased that they were being inconvinienced by the vigilante. The Ranskahovs did not take Wesley's attitude well, but he told them that the situation with the vigilante must be handled fast and quietly. However, Anatoly reminded Welsey about the Union Allied Construction scandal and how it could affect their entire operation, and Welsey assured that they were handling it.

Vladimir, however, added that the situation with Prohaszka was still unresolved and although Wesley stated that the negotiations with Prohaszka were in motion, Anatoly only scoffed at it. He sarcastically offered Wesley to sit down with the vigilante and "negotiate" with him, before Owlsley tried to defuse the situation and turn the attention to Union Allied. He noted that cleaning the ongoing scandal as soon as possible was in their best interests, to which Wesley stated again that the situation was under control. Anatoly listened to Wesley and turned back to Vladimir who did not seem convinced or satisfied by Wesley's promises.

Anatoly-Ranskahov-Kidnapping

In an attempt to lure the masked man, Anatoly and Vladimir beat up a passer-by and kidnapped his son, expecting the vigilante to try and rescue him.[8] The vigilante tracked them down but the Russian Mafia prepared a trap in which he was brutally beaten and almost killed, although he managed to escape. Despite Anatoly and Vladimir sending Semyon to find the Masked Man and finish him, the vigilante thwarted their plans and successfully rescued the boy.[9] Several days later, Anatoly and a group of his subordinates were attacked by the Masked Man and although he managed to escape, numerous Russian Mafia members were heavily injured.[7]

"Если начальник Уэсли узнает...[10]"
"Его 'начальник'? Знаешь почему Фиск... не хочет, чтобы кто-то знал его имя? Хмм? Потому что это предаст, что он просто человек.[11]"
"Как и козел в маске... Смотри что он понаделал.[12]"
―Anatoly Ranskahov and Vladimir Ranskahov[src]

Back at the Veles Taxi Garage, Anatoly and Vladimir were visited by James Wesley, who took a notice of Anatoly's wounds from the altercation with the masked vigilante. Wesley then informed them that Leland Owlsley finalized the paperwork to transfer Prohaszka's Kitchen Cab assets to Veles Taxi, doubling Russian Mafia's distribution network, and Anatoly expressed his gratitude. However, Wesley commented at their low quota, to which Anatoly and Vladimir informed him that the masked man is hunting for Wilson Fisk, asking for him by his name.

Concerned, Wesley replied that the masked man problem should be handled, as he could threaten their whole operation, noting that Madame Gao and Nobu Yoshioka also expressed their disappointment. Wesley then informed them about Fisk's offer to provide the Russian Mafia with the nessessary assistance to ensure that the operation go smoothly. Anatoly was interested but Vladimir ultimately dismissed Wesley's offer, saying that all Fisk wanted was to take over. Wesley then assured both Anatoly and Vladimir that it was not an order and gave them time to consider before leaving.

Frustrated, Vladimir told Anatoly to contact Piotr, so he could keep an eye on Fisk and his movements. Anatoly was feeling uneasy with acting behind Fisk's back and when Vladimir reminded him that Fisk was only a human, Anatoly commented on the masked vigilante and how he disrupted their business. Knowing that the masked man must be dealt with, Vladimir asked about Semyon who could have known something but Anatoly replied that after a confrontation with the vigilante, he was still in coma. Regardless, Vladimir decided that it was time to wake him up, so he and Anatoly headed to Metro-General Hospital to see Semyon.[7]

Anatoly and Vladimir arrived at Metro-General Hospital and visisted comtaose Semyon at his room, as they were preparing the epinephrine kit. Anatoly commented that it would kill him, noting that Semyon was usually the one to handle a job like this, to which Vladimir replied that he would understand. Anatoly then informed Vladimir that Piotr was checking on Wilson Fisk but noted that he is rather cautious and might find out, as Vladimir noted that his brother was afraid. He said that after their sentence at Utkin Prison and all the hardships they went through, Anatoly cannot lose what they had again.

As Vladimir said that back there they were always in sync, Anatoly remarked that they lost their way at the United States, so his brother promised him that they could find it again together. Vladimir then injected Semyon with an epinephrine, forcefully jumpstarting his heart, so he could answer their questions. Waking up, Semyon told Anatoly and Vladimir that he was attacked by the Devil himself and he had a woman with him. Before his last breath, Semyon gave them an address, so the Russian Mafia members kidnapped the woman, however, the vigilante ended up rescuing her.

Anatoly says that they need Wilson Fisk

Anatoly and Vladimir returned to Veles Taxi Garage and witnessed the aftermath of the devil beating down all of their men. Anatoly then was contacted by Piotr and informed him that Fisk was spotted, before telling Vladimir that they need Fisk's help to get a solid footing. Vladimir angrily told him that he will never bow down to Fisk, to which Anatoly replied that he will go and bow down for both of them. Vladimir was visibly frustrated but allowed Anatoly to make a deal with Fisk, before he left.[7]

A Fatal Mistake[]

"You were right to reach out to us, although... a call would have been more appropriate."
"Look, I... I wanted to speak with him in person. Try to put the past behind us."
James Wesley and Anatoly Ranskahov[src]

Anatoly and his men arrived at Brasserie and demanded an audience with Wilson Fisk, while he had a date with Vanessa Marianna. Fisk's bodyguards did not let Anatoly through, while Fisk went to get Marianna out of the restaurant. Anatoly told Fisk that he and Vladimir gratefully accept his deal, but Fisk ignored him and said that James Wesley will take care of him. Anatoly was brought to Fisk's car by Wesley and they took off, as Anatoly told him about their failed attempt to bring down the masked vigilante. Wesley was disappointed that they did not even get the woman's name, and Anatoly told him that the vigilante got her out before their men finished.

Wesley commented that Anatoly did the right thing by reaching out to them but noted that a call would be more appropriate, to which Anatoly replied that he wanted to speak to Fisk in person and put the past behind them. As the car stopped, Wesley remarked that the past can be forgotten but it never goes away and lingers no matter what you do. While Anatoly was confused, Wesley responded to a phone call from Fisk and told Anatoly that he wanted to talk, before Anatoly was forcefully dragged out of the car by a furious Fisk.

Anatoly tried to fight back, however, Fisk was too tough for him to handle and easily overpowered Anatoly, throwing him on the ground. Anatoly then tried to pull up a knife and slash Fisk, but his armor protected Fisk from a hit, before Fisk disarmed Anatoly and pinned him to the car. Fisk screamed that Anatoly embarassed him in front of Marianna and proceeded to hit Anatoly again, as he was unable to fight back. Anatoly tried to beg Wesley for help, but his plea was ignored, and Fisk put Anatoly's head between the door of the car and proceeded to bash it repeatedly with the door until it was removed from his body, leaving Ranskahov as nothing more than a bloody headless corpse lying in the dirt.[7]

Legacy[]

Vladimir's Revenge[]

"Мы отдадим тебе почет, брат мой... кровью войны.[16]"
Vladimir Ranskahov[src]

Knowing that Anatoly's death would start the war with the Russian Mafia, Wilson Fisk left his body for Vladimir to find with a black mask on him. Vladimir assumed that the masked man was responsible for the death of his brother and ordered to find and kill the vigilante, putting a bounty on his head. However, Turk Barrett informed Vladimir that the man resembling Fisk was spotted at the place where Anatoly's body was found and that his car was stained of the remnants of someone's head.

Vladimir realized that Fisk murdered his brother and manipulated him, so he declared an all-out war on Fisk. However, Fisk put his plan into motion and detonated the bombs at the Russian Mafia's hideouts, before ordering the corrupt NYPD officers to finish off all survived Russian Mafia members.[17] Vladimir was heavily injured but was rescued by the masked man, who told him that he had nothing to do with Anatoly's death, and it was another of Fisk's manipualtions. Vladimir informed the masked man about Leland Owlsley who had the access to Fisk's funds and died at the hands of the SWAT, allowing the masked vigilante to escape and bring Fisk down.[18]

"Когда у нас ничего не было, мы согласны были во всем.[19]"
"Мы потеряли путь, в этой стране богатства.[20]"
Vladimir Ranskahov and Anatoly Ranskahov[src]

Ranskahov was similar to his brother in the sense that they both were skilled criminals and well educated in that field. However, Ranskahov was very worried about the possibility of getting put in jail after his horrible three-year stint in Utkin Prison. Fisk then murdered Ranskahov for his actions.

This decision, although would have been for the better, was costly as Anatoly decided to interrupt Fisk's date with Vanessa Marianna, leading Fisk to kill him.
  • Businessman: Working with Wilson Fisk, Leland Owlsley, Madame Gao, Nobu Yoshioka and his brother, Anatoly distributed the Steel Serpent heroin to his cutomers.
  • Knife Mastery: Ranskahov was skilled in using a knife in battle, as he used it during his fight with Wilson Fisk.
