The Ambush at the Shadow Realm was a trap laid by Gorr the God Butcher to lure the joined forces of Thor, Valkyrie, and Mighty Thor, and obtain the Stormbreaker from them.
Background[]
Thor, Mighty Thor, Korg, and Valkyrie teamed up when Gorr the God Butcher's killing spree of the universe's gods led to an attack on New Asgard. The team traveled to Omnipotence City, seeking help from the gods and the mighty Zeus, but his cowardly nature was revealed and he refused to help them. In retaliation, Thor stole Zeus' coveted weapon, Thunderbolt, and the group left Omnipotence City to face Gorr in the the Shadow Realm themselves.[2]
Ambush[]
Thor, Jane Foster, Korg, and Valkyrie accidently crashed the Aeigr into the Moon of Shame, where Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, who survived the crash, simply screamed. The heroes made sure everyone was safe before carefully traversing the tiny moon, until they came across Gorr's hut. They searched for the Asgardian kids; however, Jane found a diorama of Gorr's plan, now realizing that they fell into a trap laid by Gorr. Thinking fast, Foster immediately grabbed Stormbreaker from Thor and chucked the axe far away.
Now dropping the illusion, Gorr wrapped the group in tentacles that made up the hut. Not wasting any time, Gorr began to taunt the heroes with their troubles, which were indirectly being caused by the gods not wanting to help. However, when Gorr realized that Thor cared deeply for his allies, he began to choke them to death, pressuring him to summon Stormbreaker.
Thor fully powered Stormbreaker when calling it back to him, whose sheer power obliterated the hut. Now in a scramble to get out, the heroes were forced to fight some of Gorr's Shadow Monsters, but Valkyrie, armed with Thunderbolt, went to face Gorr head-on. However, Gorr used his powers to sneak up and stab her with the Necrosword.
Calling for a retreat, Thor used Stormbreaker to teleport him and his allies from the Moon of Shame. However, before Thor could be lifted off the surface of the moon by the Bifrost, Gorr teleported to his side and grabbed Stormbreaker before sending up the Bridge.[2]
Aftermath[]
- "First off, the name is Mighty Thor! And secondly, if you can't say Mighty Thor, I'll accept Doctor Jane Foster! And thirdly, eat my hammer!"
- ―Jane Foster to Gorr the God Butcher[src]
Upon landing in New Asgard, Thor finally saw how far Jane Foster's cancer had progressed when she was separated from Mjølnir. This, along with Valkyrie's stab wound, led Thor to take them to New Asgard's hospital where he begged Foster not to use the hammer, realizing that its power was slowly killing her. Valkyrie handed Thor Thunderbolt to arm him to take on Gorr the God Butcher one last time.
Meanwhile, Gorr used the power of Stormbreaker to reach the Gates of Eternity and finish his quest, only to finally be defeated and redeemed by Thor and Foster, who arrived in the middle of the battle sensing he would need help. Thor convinced Gorr to use his wish to bring his daughter back from the dead instead of killing all the gods. The Necrosword was finally destroyed, and Gorr succumbed to its curse, putting an end to his quest. Thor held Foster in his arms as she died, promising her that he would take care of Gorr's daughter. Upon her death, Foster went to Valhalla, where she was greeted by Heimdall.[2]
