Director Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie is a mechanic and former member of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s engineering division before eventually taking on the role of director after Daisy Johnson and Phil Coulson. Despite the heavy casualties S.H.I.E.L.D. took during the HYDRA Uprising, he stayed loyal to his oath and continued his service in the remains of S.H.I.E.L.D. under Robert Gonzales. However, as another faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. led by Coulson emerged, he was sent alongside Bobbi Morse and Isabelle Hartley to infiltrate it. Now working undercover, he pretended to be a simple mechanic while searching for Nick Fury's Toolbox. When the truth was revealed, Mackenzie's colleagues quickly attacked and occupied the Playground, taking control over most of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, the two factions eventually managed to put aside their differences and work together against HYDRA. When S.H.I.E.L.D. was formally reunited with Coulson as its rightful director, Mackenzie decided to leave the organization, only to change his mind when the Inhumans killed Gonzales and attacked S.H.I.E.L.D. After the War Against the Inhumans, during which he saved Coulson's life, Mackenzie was put in charge of overseeing all alien artifacts S.H.I.E.L.D. may collect.
A few months later, he became the partner of Daisy Johnson in recruiting Inhumans to the powered individuals team she was establishing. Mackenzie united the team when he was the temporary Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He continued working with S.H.I.E.L.D. in their fights against Gideon Malick and Hive.
Eventually, Johnson went rogue, so he and Coulson pursued her under Jeffrey Mace's leadership. But as Lucy Bauer, a woman with ghost-like abilities, wanted to use the Darkhold for her needs, Mackenzie had to join forces with Johnson and Robbie Reyes, who was Ghost Rider, to stop her. Mackenzie was temporarily merged with the Spirit of Vengeance. He then helped S.H.I.E.L.D. to defeat Eli Morrow, which led to the renewal of his relationship with Elena Rodriguez. Following Holden Radcliffe's betrayal on S.H.I.E.L.D., Mackenzie was kidnapped and his mind was put inside the Framework, a virtual reality where he lived a rewritten life with his long dead daughter. Despite Johnson and Jemma Simmons' efforts to bring him back to the real world, Mackenzie decided to stay with his daughter in the Framework. However, when the Framework started deleting itself, including his daughter, a grieving Mackenzie followed Rodriguez back to the real world.
Soon after, Mackenzie and the rest of the team were sent to the year 2091 where Earth had been destroyed and the human survivors lived in the Lighthouse under Kree rule. He and Rodriguez decided to stay in the station with Inhuman Flint to help the people to stand against the Kree, while the rest of the team left to find a way back to the present. With the success of the uprising he helped to cause and the death of Kasius by him, Mackenzie returned to the present. S.H.I.E.L.D. immediately worked to prevent the Destruction of Earth, came into conflict with Hale's HYDRA and later with the Confederacy. Following S.H.I.E.L.D.'s victory over Glenn Talbot and saving Earth, although losing Leo Fitz, the mantle of Director passed to Mackenzie.
A year later, Mackenzie operated in the Lighthouse as Director when Sarge and his crew appeared on Earth, with Sarge bearing resemblance with the deceased Phil Coulson. When Melinda May captured Sarge, Mackenzie held him prisoner in the Lighthouse until the threat of the Shrike grew more serious. When Sarge tried to take control of Zephyr One, Mackenzie fought back and allied himself with Jaco to rescue Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons from Izel. However, when Izel returned to Earth in Agent Davis' body, she killed him and used Mackenzie's body to obtain the Gravity Containment Device. She then took Yo-Yo Rodriguez's body and Mackenzie on Zephyr One to the Temple of the Forgotten, where he and Rodriguez would be used to create Flint and use him to construct new monoliths. After being freed by Deke Shaw, Mackenzie escaped the temple before returning to finish off Izel and Sarge in a final battle. After killing them both, Simmons arrived to the temple and took Mackenzie to 1931 to stop the Chronicom Hunters from eliminating S.H.I.E.L.D. before it is created.
Growing Up with Ruben
- "I was raised do unto others as you would have them do to you."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Alphonso Mackenzie grow up in his parents' house with his younger brother, Ruben, who wanted them to motorcycle down to Baja California. As a child, Mackenzie had an angry moment because he could not find his coin collection and punched a wall. A few days later, he noticed his hand was swollen and purple; he had broken his finger and had not noticed. This incident taught Mackenzie that the worst pain is the one unseen. He also served three terms in the class treasurer. During high school, he was obsessed with MC Hammer.
Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
In his freshman year in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, Mackenzie was a roommate with Tony Caine and the two befriended, despite having drastically different behaviors regarding their studies. In 2002, Mackenzie graduated from Academy and became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Mackenzie worked with Bobbi Morse in a case in Dubai; there he met Lance Hunter for the first time. Mackenzie did not give Hunter much intelligence about the mission because Hunter was a mercenary.
Losing his Daughter
By 2006, Mackenzie met and fell in love with a girl named Nicole. They were in a happy relationship and getting married, and Nicole became pregnant. However, their happiness came to an end when their daughter, which they named Hope, died just four days after she was born. The experience left Mackenzie in a lot of pain and he divorced with Nicole. Mackenzie became the chief engineer aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Aircraft Carrier Iliad.
During the HYDRA Uprising, Mackenzie and Tim Maguire were captured by HYDRA along with a group of other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The leader of the assault demanded to know who the chief engineer was; when Maguire tried to insist it was him, Mackenzie told the HYDRA leader that he was lying to protect him. The HYDRA leader casually killed Maguire in front of Mackenzie to show his seriousness and ordered him to obtain blueprints of the ship. Mackenzie and the other surviving agents, Case and Susanna, were rescued by Bobbi Morse and Isabelle Hartley who were able to kill the HYDRA agents.
Searching the ship, the group found Robert Gonzales wounded in the conference room after surviving an assassination attempt where he was attacked by a HYDRA assassin with an axe. Mackenzie talked to Gonzales about when he broke his hand to prepare him for when Morse reset his damaged leg. As they prepared to escape the ship, Morse revealed that Nick Fury had given her a secret mission to destroy the ship, ensuring HYDRA never got their hands on its cargo. Gonzales, however, insisted that they all go with her to ensure she completed the mission.
Mackenzie fought against the HYDRA attackers, defending his fellow agents with a shotgun until they reached the control room. Once there Mackenzie again tried to convince Bobbi Morse not to destroy the ship as it would cause the deaths of not only the HYDRA operatives but all the other innocent S.H.I.E.L.D. agents still onboard. Although Gonzales tried to remind her that she had received a direct order from Fury himself, she sided with Mackenzie and they agreed to stand up against their attackers. Together they fought back against HYDRA, eventually killing them all and retaking control of the ship.
Mackenzie joined the reorganized remains of S.H.I.E.L.D. led by Robert Gonzales. However, soon they discovered the existence of another S.H.I.E.L.D. faction, led by Phil Coulson. Mackenzie, Bobbi Morse and Isabelle Hartley were sent by Gonzales to infiltrate Coulson's organization and retrieve the Toolbox.
Phil Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D.
When Skye, Melinda May, Antoine Triplett, Idaho, Lance Hunter, and Isabelle Hartley returned from unsuccessfully attempting to get a level ten file about an 0-8-4, Mackenzie stopped watching Glenn Talbot's interview to greet them. Triplett explained to him that the mission did not go as planned and they did not get anything new.
Later, Phil Coulson explained to him and Billy Koenig that he sent the six into a Government Storage Warehouse that housed S.H.I.E.L.D. paraphernalia despite the odds of success because they needed a Quinjet's cloaking technology to travel secretly. Coulson believed that in Fitz's state he was incapable of completing the job of making the Bus undetectable.
When Skye and Antoine Triplett returned to the Playground with a Quinjet, Mackenzie was tasked with reverse engineering its cloaking technology for the Bus. He went to Leo Fitz for advice, and during their interaction, he noticed that Fitz wanted to help against Carl Creel. Eventually, Mackenzie learned to understand what Fitz was trying to say and helped Fitz to modify the Overkill Device which allowed Phil Coulson to subdue Creel. This resulted in the forming of a friendship between the two, much to the pleasure of the rest of the team, who were happy that Fitz was opening up to somebody.
The Moroccan Mission
- "They're taking the Bus. You know what that means? Means we got the night off. Koenig's on assignment and won't be hogging the Xbox. Man, why aren't you happier about this?"
"'Cause I should be going. I mean I... I knew him."
"No need to feel bad about it. It is what it is."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Leo Fitz[src]
Mackenzie and Lance Hunter made a bet with each other about whether or not Skye had been trained at the S.H.I.E.L.D. academy. Mackenzie won his bet with Hunter, causing him to do inventory. He told Hunter not to put lines through his sevens; Billy Koenig hates that. When Coulson returned from his debriefing with Jemma Simmons, he had a meeting with his agents, including Fitz and Mackenzie. When Fitz was asked for input on Donnie Gill, Mackenzie helped to translate Fitz's thoughts.
Gill froze the Maribel del Mar in a harbor in Casablanca, alerting both S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA to his location. As the field agents left, Mackenzie told Fitz that they could play Xbox. Fitz was upset because he wanted to go as well; Mackenzie tried to make him feel better. After Fitz interrogated Grant Ward, he unplugged Mackenzie's game and told Mackenzie to contact the field agents about Gill's brainwashing.
Bonding with Others
- "I just wanted to thank you, for helping Fitz. Well, for... for being his friend."
"I don't help him. He doesn't need any. You know, that guy you're wishing he would be, I never met him. I only know this guy, and, uh... Yeah, I mean, he's a little weird, but, uh... but I like him."
- ―Jemma Simmons and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Mackenzie was the driver of a 1962 Rolls Royce that Phil Coulson and Melinda May used to get to a gala held to rebuild Santa Maria de las Flores. He told Coulson that he would wait patiently for him to give him permission to repair Lola. After they exited, Mackenzie went to South Beach to get Lance Hunter to take him to the Bus. At the Bus, Mackenzie was bored with the stories Hunter told of his ex-wife and read a magazine.
Agent 33, disguised as Melinda May, put a virus in the electrical system of the plane that, if left unchecked, would cause it to explode. Mackenzie acted as Fitz's translator to convey his thoughts on what was happening. Hunter and Fitz ultimately stopped the virus.
When Mackenzie and Hunter were drinking together and telling stories, Fitz chose to bond with Hunter and Mackenzie by talking about his unrequited feelings for Jemma Simmons; Mackenzie told him he was better off without her.
Mackenzie greeted Bobbi Morse with a hug when she came to the Playground after her undercover HYDRA security assignment. The two old friends laughed together as they talked about Morse's favorite drink when her ex-husband Lance Hunter interrupted their reunion.
After helping Fitz access the hard drive Jemma Simmons retrieved from HYDRA Laboratories, he helped to discover that Vincent Beckers was a scientist for the Red Skull and Julien Beckers' connection to HYDRA.
Later, Mackenzie was approached by Jemma Simmons, who had recently been undercover within HYDRA and had been rescued by Bobbi Morse. Simmons thanked Mackenzie for everything he had for Fitz in his recovery. Mackenzie made it clear that he was very fond of Fitz despite his disability. Their conversation eventually led them to the fact Simmons had left and the effect that had had on Fitz. Mackenzie told her that the only thing that made him struggle with his mind was her, and Simmons agreed.
Hating the Weirdness
- "T.A.H.I.T.I. was designed to revive a fallen Avenger. That's how it got started."
"Captain America, Iron Man – those Avengers?"
"Those are the ones."
"How the hell could Coulson forget that? What, does he have alien blood, too? Man, can you imagine that – S.H.I.E.L.D. being run by a man that's part alien?"
- ―Skye and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Mackenzie and Leo Fitz retrieved the body of Janice Robbins so Jemma Simmons could perform an autopsy. She berated Mackenzie for the words of bravado he said as he turned over the body. Mackenzie and Fitz were asked by Skye to come to the secret room containing the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine; their strength might have been needed if Phil Coulson acted erratically during or after the session. As predicted, they had to hold Coulson down after the session ended.
While playing video games with Leo Fitz, he complained about Coulson's brain being erased and how that affected his confidence in Coulson being the director. Fitz explained that memories are not truly erased because the brain creates back-up files and Coulson was using the machine to access them. He tried to convince Fitz to play the video game himself, as he believed it would help with his hand-eye coordination. During their conversation, Simmons arrived and showed them that Skye had been locked in Vault D by Coulson, who had escaped to track down his former agents.
After freeing Skye, the two took an SUV to find the residence of Hank Thompson, where they believed Coulson would have gone. During the drive, Skye explained Project T.A.H.I.T.I. to Mackenzie. He highly disapproved with working with alien blood and being around aliens; Skye looked at him, ironically. Thompson flagged Mackenzie down and told them the situation which Mackenzie said he would handle. Mackenzie and Skye found Coulson engaged in a fierce fight with Sebastian Derik; Coulson was strangling him. Mackenzie and Skye held Coulson at gunpoint, begging him not to kill Derik. They learned that Coulson was not trying to kill Derik, only show him the train track erections that Thompson had built.
Mackenzie was one of the senior agents that were assembled when Director Coulson gave the new mission: to find the city that matched the Words of Creation before HYDRA did. Mackenzie stood next to Antoine Triplett and remained unconfident of Coulson's leadership.
Later, as they watched Bobbi Morse interrogate the recently captured Sunil Bakshi in Vault D, Mackenzie and Lance Hunter discussed how a week earlier Mackenzie had to hold down the Director. Mackenzie made it clear that he felt that the director was out of his mind during the incident. Before they could discuss it further Jemma Simmons entered, interrupting the conversation.
When the team discovered the entrance to the underground city beneath San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mackenzie, Bobbi Morse, Phil Coulson, Leo Fitz, and Jemma Simmons went to investigate. Aboard the Quinjet, Mackenzie asked Morse if Lance Hunter would replace Isabelle Hartley in their mission. She said that Hunter did not know and will not be involved. In San Juan, Mackenzie used a Mouse Hole to make an opening to the underground city, realizing that the shaft was a hundred feet down. Fitz first sent some D.W.A.R.F.s down, but they mysteriously lost their connection. Mackenzie was then lowered down and discovered the drones, before noticing a strange pattern in the floor. As he touched a section of the floor, the pattern began to glow before symbols similar to what was on the Diviner appeared on Mackenzie's palm, causing him extreme pain.
The team quickly pulled him back up, unaware of how to treat him. Knowing that his body was being taken over, Mackenzie then told Coulson to run as his eyes suddenly turned red, before he knocked Coulson into a wall as if he were possessed by a powerful force. Mackenzie began to attack every member of the team; Morse went for the attack but her blows were ineffective. As Mackenzie was distracted, Fitz shot him in the back with an I.C.E.R., but his body absorbed the hits.
As Mackenzie went to attack Simmons and Coulson, Morse stuck both of her staves against his neck, electrocuting him enough to stun him; his body fell down the entrance to the underground city and hit the ground hard. Coulson ordered the hole be sealed. When Morse asked if they could save Mackenzie, Coulson told her that was not Mackenzie.
While Mackenzie did fall very far, he survived, though still brainwashed and silent, in the Kree City. He aided Raina in finding the Temple due to her Inhuman heritage, and did not attack Skye for the same reason, but would not approach the temple further than a certain point. He did not move except to defend the temple, as was the case when Coulson came to him, and he reacted violently once more. Jemma Simmons theorized that the city co-opted Mackenzie to defend itself. Mackenzie reverted back to his normal self when the Diviner was activated in the chamber within the Temple in the Kree City, he and Coulson managed to escape as the Temple shook.
Chain of Command
Mackenzie kept himself busy upon his return from the Kree City to the Playground. During a conversation with Leo Fitz, Fitz tried to help Mackenzie deal with what had happened to him and Antoine Triplett's death, but Mackenzie was not receptive. Looking at Skye who was in quarantine after her experiences, Mackenzie asked for blueprints to the Playground so that if Skye was contagious, it would not spread.
When the senior agents got together to discuss what to do with Sunil Bakshi, Mackenzie disagreed with Coulson's plan. Originally, he did not want to voice it, but, as the conversation continued, Mackenzie became enraged that Coulson was asking them to lay down their lives if necessary. An argument ensued; Mackenzie believed that Coulson was asking for too much from them, especially without well-thought-out plans and with an alien obsession. Coulson cut the conversation short; he let everyone, especially Mackenzie, know that Triplett knew his place and followed orders.
During their mission, Lance Hunter asked Bobbi Morse why, during the argument, she tried so hard to keep Mackenzie from talking; he wondered if she was trying to keep him from revealing the duet's secret mission. Morse told Hunter that she and Mackenzie did not have a secret mission; they were a part of a support group that catered to those who felt betrayed during the HYDRA Uprising.
Later, at the vigil for Triplett, Mackenzie and Morse went to get a snack. He told her that using the blueprints of the Playground he had gotten earlier, as well as the camera in the miniature version of Lola that Coulson had, he determined that the Toolbox was in Coulson's office. They decided that everything was on schedule.
Phil Coulson decided to help with taking an inventory; Mackenzie asked him if he was doing it because of their squabble earlier. Coulson told him that he had no ill feelings about that; he just wanted to do it to assure that it was complete. Coulson asked Mackenzie to become a field agent, citing his fighting skills and brute strength, but Mackenzie declined, feeling that hurting people was not within him.
Coulson nonetheless sent him to Faro, Portugal to assist Leo Fitz and Lance Hunter in their investigation of who battled Sif on a beach there. While they worked, Hunter told them that he was going to take Coulson's offer to be a permanent member of S.H.I.E.L.D..
Upon returning to the Playground, Mackenzie approached Bobbi Morse about Hunter's promotion. She asked him if Hunter could join them in the duo's mission; Mackenzie adamantly refused, telling her that Hunter is no longer an option now that he has joined Coulson. Mackenzie recommended to Morse that the couple part ways. When Hunter left Morse after a brief argument, he bumped into Mackenzie on his way out.
Together, Mackenzie and Morse ran to see what was happening when an earthquake occurred. As they were approaching where Coulson was interviewing Vin-Tak, they saw Melinda May running with Skye and the Kree chasing them. Mackenzie challenged Vin-Tak by punching him in the jaw; Vin-Tak responded by knocking Mackenzie across the room and into unconsciousness.
While Coulson and May escorted Vin-Tak and Sif away from the Playground so the Kree could return to Hala, Mackenzie and others cleaned the mess that Skye's power display caused. Fitz was the only one who sided with Skye; Mackenzie and the others felt that she was dangerous and that they should be protected from her.
Later, Mackenzie was doing mechanical work when Hunter demanded full disclosure about his mission with Morse, telling him that he knew the two were conspiring together and that she had a flash drive of his in her possession. The mechanic panicked, grabbed Hunter, and put him in a choke hold which put him to sleep. Laying Hunter beside the S.H.I.E.L.D. SUV, Mackenzie regretted his action.
Mackenzie took Lance Hunter to a S.H.I.E.L.D. Safe House and locked him in the bathroom; he then called Bobbi Morse, telling her that he did not like this situation and had no exit strategy. When Hunter heard the two talking, he began to shout insults; Morse told Mackenzie to get Hunter a beer to keep him calm.
Phil Coulson asked Morse about Hunter's absence; she told Coulson that Hunter ran off after she ended their relationship and Mackenzie went to find him.
Mackenzie brought Hunter a Hawaiian style pizza and beer. He then asked Hunter to trust him as they reminisced about the first mission he, Hunter, and Morse had together. Hunter said that the main point he remembered about that mission was that Mackenzie kept him in the dark since he was not a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Hours later, Mackenzie returned to the Iliad alongside Lance Hunter, saying their ride had arrived. With armed guards, Mackenzie removed Hunter's blindfold. When Hunter demanded to know what Mackenzie was doing and for whom he really worked, Mackenzie told him that he and Bobbi Morse worked for "the real S.H.I.E.L.D.", much to Hunter's shock and confusion.
Return to the Playground
Mackenzie was greeted warmly by Robert Gonzales and then introduced him to Lance Hunter. Mackenzie sat as the leaders of Gonzales' faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. explained their disapproval of the leadership of Phil Coulson. Hunter could not believe that Mackenzie was allied with them; he had more issues when Bobbi Morse arrived.
Gonzales sent Mackenzie back to the Playground to gather further intelligence on Theta Protocol. When he came across Melinda May, she questioned him about the absence of both Hunter and Morse. Mackenzie said that he found Hunter in Athens, Georgia drunk and he had not seen Morse. May said that she would tell Coulson. Mackenzie passed the laboratory and was eavesdropping on the argument between Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons about her treatment of those who have changed. He made sure that Simmons saw him as he left. Meanwhile, May and Coulson decided that they needed to confront Mackenzie on his lies.
- "What did you say when I asked if you were loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
"I said I was because I am, and that's the truth, sir."
"Look... you've always been brutally honest with me, and I value that. So I'm giving you a chance here. Just tell me who you're working for."
"I work for S.H.I.E.L.D."
- ―Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Phil Coulson allowed Mackenzie to look under the hood of Lola, citing how he was impressed with the toy replica he had created and how it was so exact in its duplication. Coulson then told him that because of his own personal knowledge of the vehicle he knew that there was an extra mechanism in it. Mackenzie feigned ignorance, but Coulson told him to be honest and to tell him where his loyalty lied. Though Mackenzie told Coulson that he worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson had him surrounded by other armed agents. Mackenzie escaped when Bobbi Morse set off an EMP.
Mackenzie found Leo Fitz in a maintenance closet; Fitz had discovered the bomb that Morse had set there. Mackenzie leaped upon Fitz and saved him from the explosion which allowed Robert Gonzales and his faction to enter the Playground. Later, Anne Weaver convinced Jemma Simmons to tend to Mackenzie's injuries.
Request to Stay
- "I'll always be your friend, Fitz. Hopefully, someday, you'll understand why I had to do what I did."
"If you're here to convince me to open the box, you're wasting–"
"No, I'm here because I don't want you to leave, man. I believe in what we're doing. I want you on board."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Leo Fitz[src]
Mackenzie saw Bobbi Morse sitting aboard the Bus and asked her why she was hiding; Morse was watching a video feed of Robert Gonzales interrogating Melinda May and felt uncomfortable being around other agents. She told Mackenzie that others feel that they are traitors, even Leo Fitz was planning to resign from S.H.I.E.L.D. Mackenzie told her to remain vigilant because they were doing the right thing for the future of the organization.
Mackenzie then went to Fitz and asked him to stay; he wanted his friend to understand that everyone else was on board with the new regime, citing that Jemma Simmons was helping in the decoding of the Toolbox. He watched as Fitz went to the Holocom to see what Simmons had accomplished. Mackenzie was present when Fitz confronted Simmons for her apparent betrayal and watched as Fitz left the Playground.
- "In my opinion, Coulson's determined to explore people with powers. He's been on the front lines of it his whole career – Avengers Initiative, T.A.H.I.T.I. Everything he's done since restarting S.H.I.E.L.D. tells me he's continuing the work."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie to Melinda May and Jemma Simmons[src]
Mackenzie entered as Melinda May and Jemma Simmons were discussing recent revelations that Phil Coulson was spending a lot of money, was giving secret upgrades to Deathlok, and was having a clandestine meeting with Andrew Garner. Mackenzie theorized that Coulson was gathering super-powered individuals, especially since Coulson has always been at the forefront of contacting those types of people for S.H.I.E.L.D.. This theory prompted May to order Simmons to open the Toolbox.
Finding Phil Coulson
While fight training with Bobbi Morse, they discussed fighting styles, with Morse giving Mackenzie advice on how to avoid being knocked to the ground. They discussed Jemma Simmons' progress with the Toolbox, and Mackenzie told her that he believed that she was stalling. Morse expressed her displeasure at the fact that Gonzales had had Leo Fitz followed since he left the Playground, as she did not view Coulson's team as the enemy. They questioned whether or not Lance Hunter was right all along. Mackenzie told Morse that they were bringing in a special laser designed to cut through the Vibranium protecting the Toolbox. However, it was soon learned that Simmons was, in fact, working with a decoy that Fitz had switched for the original Toolbox, which Fitz had smuggled out.
Shortly afterwards, Melinda May received a phone call from Skye; they choose not to tell her about Coulson's disappearance and claimed he was searching for her. She informed them that she was with Calvin Zabo who was going to turn very angry and dangerous very soon, so she called for S.H.I.E.L.D. to come and stop him. Mackenzie and Morse took a team to her location. By the time they arrived, they found the remains of a battle with many HYDRA casualties. As they explored the building, they found Phil Coulson waiting for them. Coulson raised his arms in surrender and asked them to bring him to Robert Gonzales.
Phil Coulson and Robert Gonzales made a deal in which Gonzales would assist Coulson in a mission to rescue enhanced individuals being held hostage by HYDRA scientist Dr. List, and in exchange, Coulson would open the Toolbox for him. Mackenzie worked on a video system so the other agents could watch the mission unfold in real time. He was approached by Lance Hunter, and Mackenzie tried to explain his actions and Hunter forgave him. Mackenzie promised to buy him a round of drinks; Hunter jokingly made it clear that he expected more than just a round of drinks to repay for Mackenzie's actions. Mackenzie joined Gonzales and Bobbi Morse as Coulson's Team attacked the HYDRA base and successfully rescued the hostages before Gonzales ordered the base to be destroyed.
Learning that S.H.I.E.L.D. would continue with Phil Coulson as director, Mackenzie made the choice to leave the organization, telling only Bobbi Morse. Mackenzie continued working out at the Playground, despite Morse turning up late to be his spotter. Morse told him that she was preparing her speech to convince him to stay. Mackenzie asked her if she had spoken to Lance Hunter yet and she explained he had not even looked her in the eye yet; he explained to her that Hunter was rekindling his friendship with him to annoy her. Morse explained that she and Hunter were very different people emotionally.
Mackenzie met with Phil Coulson in his office as Coulson was preparing for a mission to speak to the leader of the Inhumans. Mackenzie told him that he would not mince his words and informed him that he was leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. as he felt he could not trust Coulson as leader after learning of his experiences with being brought back from the dead with the use of alien blood. Coulson offered to reassign him to the Iliad under Robert Gonzales' leadership but Mackenzie told him he wanted no part of Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D. Mackenzie handed over his S.H.I.E.L.D. badge, and Coulson told him he was sorry to lose him. They shook hands before Mackenzie left the base.
Mackenzie returned to the Iliad to collect his belongings; while there he spoke to Agent Oliver about his plans after leaving, which included a motorcycling holiday with his brother. As they were talking, the alarms on the ship were set off. Mackenzie asked Agent Harris what had happened, and they were informed that Robert Gonzales had been killed at the peace meeting and they were now waiting for orders.
Mackenzie arrived in the control room as Anne Weaver and Oliver were speaking to Phil Coulson about their next move, insisting that they should prepare to attack the Inhumans. Coulson asked Mackenzie why he was still at S.H.I.E.L.D., and he explained that with Robert Gonzales dead he needed to see this matter finished, he then agreed with Coulson that they should not attack yet. He then spoke to Weaver, who explained they had increased the guards around the Monolith and ordered Mackenzie to get the Iliad battle-ready before the Inhumans attacked.
Once Mackenzie had completed his work, he was in one of the rooms of the ship when he witnessed a team of Inhumans walking through the Iliad, carrying the unconscious Skye. As Mackenzie made his way through the ship, armed with only an axe, he encountered Alisha Whitley who duplicated her body into four before attacking Mackenzie who managed to escape. He managed to find an armored jacket and gathered equipment to fight back against the Inhumans' army. Mackenzie eventually found and freed Skye, requesting that she use her hacking abilities to help him take over the ship again and stop an emergency beacon from calling in all other S.H.I.E.L.D. teams into Jiaying's trap.
As they made their way through the ship, Mackenzie spoke to Skye about her mother's betrayal; Mackenzie comforted her by assuring her that it was not her fault. He sent Skye to hack into the computer systems to shut down the emergency signal while he went in search of equipment. When he returned, he found Skye speaking to Lincoln Campbell; Mackenzie knocked out Campbell. He gave Skye a power saw and ordered her to shut down the beacon while he went to protect the Terrigen Crystals to ensure they did not kill anyone else.
Showdown with Gordon
Mackenzie found the Terrigen Crystals and stayed with them until Gordon arrived to take them away. They began fighting, with Gordon's teleporting ability making it nearly impossible for Mackenzie to hit him with his axe. Gordon noted that Mackenzie had clearly encountered something Kree before. As they fought Gordon kept attempting to steal a Crystal while Mackenzie used all his skills and strength to prevent him from doing so.
Phil Coulson and Leo Fitz soon arrived to assist, and Fitz used a device to trap Gordon inside the room so he could no longer teleport away. They continued fighting Gordon, until he made a fatal mistake and teleported behind Fitz, causing the iron pole Fitz was holding to be embedded in Gordon's chest. As Gordon fell down dying, he dropped the Terrigen Crystal he was holding. Coulson caught it at the last second, but touching the crystal caused Coulson's hand to turn to stone. Before Coulson could be killed, Mackenzie used his axe to cut off his arm.
Daisy Johnson's Partner
Working with S.H.I.E.L.D. Again
With the threat over, Mackenzie was convinced to rejoin S.H.I.E.L.D. by Phil Coulson, who claimed it was because Mackenzie owed him for cutting off his arm. Mackenzie was put in charge of dealing with all alien artifacts that S.H.I.E.L.D. came into contact with, allowing him to ensure that the world was safe from the dangers they posed. When Jemma Simmons hinted she wanted to inspect the Monolith, Mackenzie told her there was no way they were ever opening its box as it was far too dangerous.
Six months after the War Against the Inhumans, Mackenzie, Daisy Johnson, and Lance Hunter went to Seattle, Washington to get Joey Gutierrez before the Advanced Threat Containment Unit could. After Gutierrez was contained, Mackenzie and Johnson made sure that he was safe while Johnson explained to Gutierrez that he was an Inhuman.
Mackenzie, Hunter, and Phil Coulson researched Rosalind Price, discovering that, under different aliases, Price worked for different organizations, including MI6 and the CIA. Seeing Bobbi Morse, Mackenzie was her sounding board as she analyzed the technology of the ATCU. He asked her about her relationship with Hunter and hoped she knew what she was doing.
Mackenzie accompanied Johnson to the hospital where Lincoln Campbell worked; they wanted Campbell to act as Gutierrez's transitioner. Campbell refused, walking away from Johnson mid-conversation; Mackenzie confronted him, secretly placing a subcutaneous Tracker on him, telling him that even though Campbell had powers, Mackenzie did not fear him.
As tension grew high between the two, the lights of the hospital began to flicker. Mackenzie, Johnson, and Campbell went to the front desk where they saw a monstrous man blast a hole into the chest of the security guard. The man fought Campbell; Johnson hit him with a concussive wave while Mackenzie fired his sidearm. Surprised by the resistance, the man cut a hole into a wall and fled.
Mackenzie commented that he wanted a bigger gun or an axe as they gave chase. While checking a room, the monstrous man ripped through a wall and hit Mackenzie, throwing him backwards and removing him from the fight. Daisy Johnson and Lincoln Campbell were able to outwit the creature and forced it to flee. When Mackenzie caught up with them, Campbell made the decision to run away on his own and Mackenzie ordered Johnson to return to S.H.I.E.L.D. before they were arrested by the incoming forces.
Back at the Playground, Mackenzie gave an artist a description of his combatant which he recreated on a computer, noting that the only change needed to the image of the terrifying blue-skinned creature was that it needed to be drawn bigger. He then alerted Morse and Hunter that President Matthew Ellis was having a press conference where he announced to the world of the creation of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit to deal with the dangers of the Inhumans.
Bringing Jemma Simmons Back
Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson spoke about recruiting Joey Gutierrez to the team of powered individuals she sought, but Mackenzie did not think he was fitting. She also said that Coulson's team would be soon with only three people as the rest were gone, left or injured. Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter suddenly entered, rushing to the Monolith room where Leo Fitz opened the containment of the Monolith.
They found him facing it, screaming. They managed to close the containment before it transformed to liquid form and then returned to solid form. Fitz said that he could not give up on Jemma Simmons. He noticed that on Morse's finger were sand grains. He then explained in Phil Coulson's office that it came from another world, far from Earth and that it was proof that Simmons was out there. Johnson asked him if the Monolith was a portal, and he responded that when it had taken Simmons, it had sent the sand from the other planet. Everyone agreed they have to find out what happened with Simmons.
Coulson ordered Mackenzie and Johnson to stay in the Playground and help Andrew Garner's assessment as the building of the team was still the priority; he, Fitz and Morse went to ask Elliot Randolph's help in the case. As Garner came to the base, Mackenzie greeted him warmly. He then gave him Gutierrez's file; when he asked how the two were doing, Johnson quickly stopped him, saying that their only conversation would be friendly. Garner said that that was what he meant to do. She asked him how was Melinda May and if she ever planned to return from her vacation; Garner responded that she should ask her herself.
Mackenzie got a call from Coulson that he needed the Monolith to be brought to a room in an English castle where they could transform it into a portal. Johnson came with Mackenzie on the Zephyr One and then to the room. As he entered the room, he saw ancient technology, and he said to Coulson that it remained him of his office. He helped Leo Fitz to activate the machines of the room that caused the Monolith, in a hole in the floor, to transform into its liquid state; however, a problem with the machines caused them to break up and the Monolith returned to its solid state. Fitz then said they needed to fix them, to which Mackenzie asked how they were going to fix them if they did not know how it worked.
Fitz then realized that a high frequency that came from the machines caused the Monolith to transform into a liquid state, so they could use Johnson's power to do that. Mackenzie helped Elliot Randolph to install a device that a probe they planned to send through the portal will send them a picture of the other planet. As Johnson activated her powers and the Monolith returned to a liquid state, Fitz, tied to a line, jumped through it. Mackenzie, Coulson, and Morse struggled to keep the device stable as Fitz looked for Simmons. Coulson then ordered them to retrieve him. Johnson then shut down her powers and the Monolith exploded, but Fitz returned with Simmons back to Earth. Johnson fell, but Mackenzie held her and complimented her action.
Protecting Lincoln Campbell
Mackenzie spoke with the team in Phil Coulson's office about Jemma Simmons as Daisy Johnson entered to inform Coulson that the Advanced Threat Containment Unit was pursuing Lincoln Campbell. Mackenzie and Coulson informed her about the Tracker Mackenzie had planted on him. Johnson then called Campbell and tried to convince him to let them help him, but he hung up the call and destroyed the Tracker. Mackenzie and Johnson argued of what they had should do with him, but Coulson calmed them and said they will figure out what to do.
Coulson then asked Johnson to locate Campbell's last location and asked for Mackenzie to find Rosalind Price's phone number. Johnson then got a call from Campbell and he asked for help after he had accidentally killed his friend. Johnson accompanied Mackenzie to retrieve Campbell while Coulson went to meet Price. The two managed to escape the ATCU and Johnson entered the apartment where Campbell was hiding. Mackenzie heard how Johnson succeeded in convincing Campbell to come with her and the two even kissed, but Mackenzie got new orders from Coulson, saying to help the ATCU enter the apartment and let them take Campbell, as Coulson had no choice but to let them as that was the only way to keep Johnson safe. Johnson was surprised to hear that from Mackenzie, but Campbell managed to escape.Luther Banks then ordered his soldiers to take Johnson, but Mackenzie pulled out his gun and aimed it at his head. However, Banks got a call from Price and he left without Johnson.
When Alisha Whitley assisted S.H.I.E.L.D. with a recruitment mission for an Inhuman couple, the monstrous man came and killed the couple and one of Alisha's duplicates. Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson searched for him on Phil Coulson's order. They followed the trail to a dark industrial place, where they were surprised by the Advanced Threat Containment Unit and Rosalind Price. Coulson joined them and said that they were helping the ATCU to find the monstrous killer. Johnson argued with Coulson about the deal he had made with the ATCU, but Coulson replied that it was a means to an end. Johnson asked if it was S.H.I.E.L.D.'s or the ATCU's means, but Coulson did not respond.
Johnson suspected the Inhuman Dwight Frye to be the Inhuman killer. Mackenzie, Coulson, and Johnson went to his house where Price and Luther Banks were waiting for him. They entered the house, and they found him hiding. Coulson and Price interrogated him, and he told them that the killer was called Lash and that Lash had brought the Inhumans' name he had wanted to kill and Frye had found them. The ATCU arrested Frye. Coulson ordered Mackenzie to go with them. Johnson also came with him, although Mackenzie did not like the idea. During their way to the ATCU facility, the track was attacked by Lash. Mackenzie fought him, but Lash knocked him out.
Mackenzie woke up in a hospital. Johnson told him that the ATCU had brought them to there. He asked her if everybody were safe, but Johnson said that Frye had been killed by Lash. Johnson told him that she had seen Lash transformed into a regular person. Price then visited them and asked him how he felt, to which Mackenzie responded that he felt like a track had fallen on him.
- "Been thinking about your ATCU theory. Now, who took off before the convoy left, and who knew the exact route we were going to take?"
"He's got access to everything that ATCU learns about Inhumans."
"We should tail him."
"Already got a van ready to go, full surveillance package. Infrared scanners, one-way glass..."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson[src]
Mackenzie had noted that Luther Banks had left them before the Attack on Dwight Frye and theorized that Banks could be Lash. He prepared a vehicle with surveillance equipment; as he told his theory to Daisy Johnson, who was wondering why Lash had never attacked her though he had the opportunity, Lance Hunter abruptly entered, begging to drive.
As the three watched Banks, Mackenzie became annoyed that Hunter was giving constant updates with no new information. Hunter asked how they planned to interrogate Banks when the discussion turned to Hunter's actions during his Attack on Grant Ward and how it directly affected Grant Ward's Attack on Andrew Garner. They noticed Banks was moving, so he advised Hunter to follow discreetly.
They followed Banks to his house. While Mackenzie and Johnson discussed what to do if Banks went inside, they heard the van door open; Hunter, in a bandana, proceeded to shoot Banks with an I.C.E.R. and bring him to the van. Johnson and Mackenzie berated Hunter for kidnapping Banks, second-in-command of the ATCU because Phil Coulson was trying to get Rosalind Price's trust; plus, doing this did not definitely tell them that Banks was not Lash. Hunter told them that since Inhumans had DNA markers, they could get a blood sample to prove Banks' species; Mackenzie watched as Hunter made Banks bleed and Johnson sent a blood sample to Jemma Simmons. The three investigated Banks' wallet and phone when he received a text message telling him to go to Endotex Labs; the three left Banks unconscious in his car and proceeded there.
At the ATCU facility, Johnson sent one of the new D.W.A.R.F.s Leo Fitz had adapted with cloaking technology into the building. They saw through the D.W.A.R.F.'s camera, they saw an Inhuman in a coma inside a gel cage. But Johnson was surprised to see Coulson with Price and just looking on the cage. Mackenzie told her to bring the D.W.A.R.F. before they would be caught.
Alphonso Mackenzie met Lincoln Campbell and inadvertently found out that Lash was the psychologist Andrew Garner. The two reported this to S.H.I.E.L.D. once on board Zephyr One. The aircraft turned around to Colorado at Culver University, where they found Melinda May chained to a water tank, having been kidnapped by Garner. Garner transformed into Lash after he was angered by Campbell's presence and began a killing spree through the many agents commanded by Phil Coulson and Rosalind Price. Mackenzie was among the first to confront Lash, attempting to hold him off and defeat him. However, Lash threw Mackenzie and knocked him out, leaving him alive while he continued his rampage.
- "What exactly is going on over there?"
"Well, multiple agency servers have been attacked in the last few minutes, and the traffic traces back to your IPs. We've already, uh, dispatched a rapid-response unit to your location. Please, just cooperate fully. Should be fine."
- ―Steve Wilson and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Mackenzie attended the S.H.I.E.L.D. meeting where Coulson outlined Operation Spotlight, where while Price visited the Playground, a team of agents would be infiltrating Endotex Labs. Mackenzie was assigned to overseeing the mission with Daisy Johnson. When the meeting was over, Coulson asked if the meeting had answered Mackenzie's questions; Mackenzie muttered that it had raised all new ones.
During the Endotex Labs infiltration, Mackenzie assisted Lance Hunter in his cover as an expert computer hacker who broke his way into the Pentagon servers. He covered S.H.I.E.L.D.'s role to Steve Wilson saying that he was part of an FBI task force. After the infiltration, Mackenzie and the others attended a meeting where Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz revealed the actual origins of HYDRA and the organization's involvement in a NASA project known as Distant Star Return.
Acting Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- "Here's the deal. What HYDRA's planning is gonna hurt a lot of innocent people, maybe people you care about. I wouldn't be asking you for your help if I didn't think we had a chance. So either you step up and do the damn job or you let the bad guys win. The choice is yours."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie to Lincoln Campbell and Joey Gutierrez[src]
Mackenzie received a call from Phil Coulson notifying him that he was in trouble and required extraction. Mackenzie drove to Rosalind Price's apartment and discovered Coulson in the middle of a firefight with HYDRA agents. When Coulson reached the car, Mackenzie asked about Price; Coulson told Mackenzie to just drive.
Back at the Playground, Mackenzie watched as Coulson collected files in his office. Asking him what he was going to do, Mackenzie listened as Coulson explained that he was about to cross lines a director should not cross, and therefore was making him acting director until he returned from a revenge mission against Grant Ward. Mackenzie asked if Coulson was going to tell him his plan, but Coulson refused to reveal it.
Mackenzie learned that HYDRA had kidnapped Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz. He called Coulson to inform him of the fact and to ask what to do, but Coulson angered, threw the phone against the wall. In need of advice, Mackenzie called Melinda May to the office and asked her if she agreed with Andrew Garner's assessment of Lincoln Campbell. Mackenzie told May that Coulson was heading towards the HYDRA base in England, and had told Ward that he was coming. Knowing that HYDRA would shoot the Quinjet down, May asked Mackenzie if he was sending any back-up. Mackenzie told May that he had asked Coulson if he wanted it, and Coulson had not answered. May told Mackenzie to make the decision for Coulson, and that he already knew what to do.
Mackenzie prepared for an attack on HYDRA, greenlighting the Caterpillars program and assembling a team of agents, along with Campbell and Joey Gutierrez. He and Daisy Johnson entered the Quinjet as it was being loaded; he explained to Campbell and Gutierrez that HYDRA had kidnapped Fitz and Simmons and he needed their help to defeat them. Gutierrez and Campbell agreed to help, and Johnson fist-bumped Mackenzie in celebration.
On their way to the HYDRA Castle, Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse landed on Zephyr One and informed to Mackenzie that Phil Coulson had jumped through the portal to Maveth to find Leo Fitz or Jemma Simmons, who one of them was taken by HYDRA to the planet. Daisy Johnson told him that HYDRA brought dozen Inhumans inside Suspension Gels to the compound. Mackenzie planned an infiltration plan into the castle, which consisted of two teams: one team would find Fitz or Simmons and the other team would take control of the portal room. He then asked Johnson to find for them a way to enter the castle.
She discovered that the aqueduct of the castle was their best way to get in. Mackenzie ordered the Secret Warriors and Melinda May to find Fitz and Simmons, at the time he, Hunter and Morse would take over the chamber. As they got to the aqueduct, Joey Gutierrez used his powers to melt its bars. Mackenzie flattered him and then sent every team to their task. Mackenzie, Hunter and Morse cheeked their heat signing and the HYDRA soldiers'. They saw that they had to fight the soldier to get to the chamber, so Morse pulled her staves and stormed at them. Mackenzie asked Hunter if they needed to wait for her, but Hunter also attacked them, with Mackenzie behind him.
The three managed to take control on the chamber. Mackenzie watched the screens as Simmons entered the room and he was happy to see her. He asked how the Monolith stones activated and Simmons told him that after the countdown, they would merge into the portal. He noticed that May was missing, so Simmons told him that Andrew Garner was in the castle and he had helped her to escape the soldiers. Lincoln Campbell asked why May returned for him, and Mackenzie responded that depended on what May would find. Simmons also told him that Gideon Malick had sent Grant Ward to the planet to find the ancient leader of HYDRA. As the team discussed this creator, Mackenzie did not believe he existed. They then argued whether let the portal reopen or not, May entered the room and informed them that Garner had killed the contained Inhumans.
Suddenly, they felt the room was shaken, meant that HYDRA tried to enter the room. Mackenzie ordered the team to return to Zephyr One and he would stay and wait for Coulson and Fitz, and if the alien or HYDRA entered the room, they would blow the castle. At first, they did not listen to him, but Mackenzie said that this his order, and he could not afford to lose their best agents today. He also said that May would be the Director if he would die. Johnson insisted to stay with him, as she could use her powers to keep the portal open. Mackenzie agreed and the rest of the team came back to the plane.
As the portal reopened, Mackenzie was given by Johnson a gun in case the alien would appear. Johnson then fainted in his arm because of the portal, and Coulson and Fitz managed to return to Earth. Mackenzie ordered May to blast the castle and the four used the Containment Module to return to Zephyr One.
Return to Duty
Connecting with Elena Rodriguez
Mackenzie, Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter investigate a weaponry abduction incident in Bogotá, with an Inhuman involving. As Mackenzie inspected the scene, he suspected a woman by noticing that the tips of her shoes had been scratched off during the raid. Suddenly, she used her super-speed and stole Mackenzie's gun before throwing him in the back of a van and driving away with him unconscious.
Mackenzie awoke in the woman's apartment, tied up to the sink. He managed to free himself and as she came to question him, he attacked and tried to escape. However, the woman used her power and close the door. Mackenzie understood that she returned to the same spot and gave her the nickname "Yo-Yo". She pulled his gun at him and tied him to a chair. Mackenzie had troubles to understand her and he called her criminal, but she said to him she thought her power was a gift from God. Mackenzie asked her if she got her power after she had eaten fish, and she started to explain the Terrigenesis. Suddenly, Daisy Johnson arrived and assisted in capturing the woman.
In Zephyr One, the team learned that her name was Elena Rodriguez, with no criminal record. After she awake, Joey Gutierrez helped with the translate and they understood that Rodriguez had stolen the weapons to get rid of them, so the local police, who are really corrupt, would stop hurting her friends. Later, Morse and Hunter were kidnapped by the police with the help of another Inhuman, and Rodriguez's cousin was killed by them. As she stared at his body, Mackenzie convinced her to help them fighting the police. She agreed and explained how her power worked.
Later, they entered the police station and Mackenzie searched for Morse and Hunter. He found them in a room where he knocked out Victor Ramon. Morse warned him about Lucio, whose power were paralyzed everyone who looked him in his eyes, so he warned the rest of the team. As they all escorted the captured Lucio, an HYDRA QuadCopter caught him and escaped. After that, Mackenzie said to Johnson that Rodriguez could fit in the Secret Warriors, although she refused to join. They agreed they should keep in touch with her, so Mackenzie gave her a device that would inform each other if they would need backup.
Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter managed to follow Gideon Malick to Siberia, with the team followed them on Zephyr One. After a few hours, Mackenzie, Daisy Johnson and Melinda May landed with a Quinjet to assist Morse and Hunter. Morse informed them that a group of Russian ministers had a meeting with Malick to see an Inhuman. They plan to get inside the compound. After they infiltrated the compound, Mackenzie and Johnson found the main computer, to follow Malick's movement.
Morse managed to install a listening device during Malick's meeting. There, Anton Petrov revealed that the Inhuman was Androvich. Mackenzie saw him through the cameras but saw something strange in the footage. As the Russian Prime Minister arrived at the compound, Phil Coulson ordered the agents to go to protract him from Androvich, since he wanted to assassinate him. The team converted to the meeting, and with a smoke bomb, Mackenzie Johnson and Morse kidnapped Androvich. As they were walking with him, a shadow appeared from the wall and knocked Mackenzie out. He woke up and saw how the shadow to the same to Johnson. Mackenzie urged Morse to go kill Androvkich while he would take Johnson back to Zephyr One.
After Morse killed Androvich, she and Hunter were arrested. Coulson went to free them, but he returned to Zephyr One alone. He informed that team that the pair were disavowed from S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to keep it a secret. Later, the team visited Teddy's Bar where Morse and Hunter were. Without directly contacting them, the others all ordered shots for the two, saying goodbye in the only way they could, but not Mackenzie; while the rest walked out, he stayed and cried on the leave of his friends.
- "I'm trying to save lives. I'll use whatever advantage I have to do it."
"Yeah, the advantage of superpowers, which is something I don't have. But I'm not so sure you should be using yours to sidestep civil liberties."
"They gave up their right to civil liberties when they started imploding buildings."
"Maybe, but it's not about how they act. It's about how we respond."
- ―Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Mackenzie decided to return to his family home to spend some time with his younger brother, Ruben. As Mackenzie and Ruben were repairing their motorcycles, Ruben was shocked to discover that Mackenzie owned some rare parts required for their bikes. Mackenzie apologized for not visiting more often, but he lied to him he was busy in his "insurance company". They turned on the television in the kitchen to see the news of the Watchdogs exploding an ATCU building. The brothers watched together, but Mackenzie noticed that Ruben was actually amazed by them.
Phil Coulson called him and asked him to go the scene, since he was of Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter. Mackenzie remained him that he was on vacation, but Coulson said they all needed to make sacrifices. Mackenzie lied to his brother he needed to assess a car accident. In the scene, he met with Daisy Johnson and Leo Fitz. Fitz discovered that the Watchdogs used Nitramene to collapse the building. Mackenzie said to him that Nitramene was not stable enough for gel-based explosive. Fitz realized that the Watchdogs must had improved it. Johnson delivered the information to Coulson, who suspected Felix Blake had something to do in this.
On Zephyr One, Mackenzie argued with Johnson on how they should act against the Watchdogs. Johnson suggested to use her powers against on of them and questioning him. Mackenzie explained that it was not about how they acted, it was about how they would respond. Mackenzie returned to his brother and found him upset. Ruben told him he was in debt. Mackenzie asked him if was going to ask him for money, but Ruben told him he would handle it alone and blamed the system for it. Mackenzie realized he was inspired by the Watchdogs and told him to stay away from them, but Ruben walked away from him.
Johnson then called him and said she had found a Watchdogs member who had told her their base's location. Mackenzie went with her and Fitz to a farm. Fitz used a D.W.A.R.F. to see Blake inside a barn. However, Ruben arrived on a motorcycle and the Watchdogs came out. Mackenzie used a I.C.E.R. against them and Ruben left after he saw Johnson using her powers. Mackenzie left Johnson and Fitz and went to his brother. He found him the house waiting for him. Mackenzie tried to explain that the Inhumans needed protection and that he was working for S.H.I.E.L.D., but Ruben did not want to hear.
In the garage, Mackenzie said he had joined S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect him when they saw their motorcycle on the flame. Mackenzie realized the Watchdogs entered the house to kill them. He took his father old shotgun and told him they would escape into the woods. Ruben asked him if he did such things at S.H.I.E.L.D., but Mackenzie said he hates those things. He cut off electricity and killed some of the Watchdogs. They hid in the kitchen from the other Watchdogs when suddenly one of them shot Mackenzie, but he used a butcher knife to kill him. He then made an improvised Shotgun-Axe with it and killed the last two Watchdogs. Ruben told him they won and Mackenzie fainted. He then was taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. medical treatment.
GT Agrochemical Facility
Mackenzie recovered from his injurers and went to the lad, where Daisy Johnson, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons examined scorched skeletons made by what looked like Grant Ward. They told him that it was actually Hive who had returned inside Ward's corpse from Maveth. Mackenzie was shocked to learn that Hive had Ward's memories. The team was called for a meeting in Phil Coulson's office where he explained that in order to find Hive, they would go to GT Agrochemical facility which had been raided by HYDRA. Coulson asked what was their advantage against them, so Mackenzie answered that they were not afraid.
On their way to the facility on Zephyr One, Mackenzie showed Coulson a picture of Giyera inside the facility. To overcome his Giyera's powers, Fitz built a gun that could be activated only by his owner. Mackenzie joked that now Giyera would punch them to death. Once they reached the facility, Mackenzie, Coulson and Melinda May entered a room where they saw dead bugs. Mackenzie discovered that the facility's data had been moved to another location, so Coulson told him to work with Fitz to find the location.
May managed to knock Giyera out and they brought him to the Containment Module in Zephyr One. Mackenzie questioned him about Gideon Malick's plans and Hive. Giyera, however, refused to answer the questions and thanked S.H.I.E.L.D. for their assistance in bringing Hive to Earth. May approached him and said they were close to Malick's base, so Mackenzie said to Giyera that they wouldn't need his help. Giyera managed to escape the Containment Module, so Mackenzie tried to stop him, but Giyera knocked him out. Giyera managed to bring the plane to the base.
Losing Yo-Yo Rodriguez' Trust
- "They all call me "Yo-Yo." Your fault. I will get my revenge. And your Spanish is much better, not just "pescado.""
"Yeah. It's a new S.H.I.E.L.D. requirement. I know you think S.H.I.E.L.D. is dangerous, but, really, our mission is to protect. Um..."
"Those kill. You do your best, but... some days are tougher than others."
- ―Yo-Yo Rodriguez and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Mackenzie and Leo Fitz helped a wounded Melinda May to get to safety and they locked themselves in a storage room with Jemma Simmons and Phil Coulson. While Lucio and his men tried to force the door, Mackenzie and Fitz found a way to keep them at bay, which bought enough time for them to be rescued by the Secret Warriors, with Yo-Yo Rodriguez being pleased to see Mackenzie again. With the Secret Warriors' help, S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to fly the Zephyr One back to the Playground with Gideon Malick as a prisoner. Once at the base, Mackenzie gave Rodriguez a tour, and she noticed his progress his speaking Spanish.
Mackenzie and Rodriguez met Phil Coulson, who ordered Mackenzie to lock up the Playground as he suspected one of the Secret Warriors had been infected by Hive during the battle at the Schoonebeek Oil Field. The top S.H.I.E.L.D. agents met in Coulson's office and tried to find a plan to know whether one of their friends was affected. Thus, Coulson ordered Mackenzie to monitor all the Secret Warriors to find any sign of suspicious activity. However, Mackenzie's observations were inconclusive. They kept looking for a plan until the power in the Playground was cut. Mackenzie rushed at the Playground's armory and noticed that the guns were unloaded and a grenade was missing. Right after that, an explosion shook the Playground and S.H.I.E.L.D. discovered that Malick had been killed.
Worried by the explosion, Rodriguez went to see Mackenzie, who explained that the base was being attacked. An argument erupted between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Secret Warriors, who locked themselves in the common room. Mackenzie tried to apologize to Rodriguez but she rebuffed him when he called her Yo-Yo. Mackenzie then searched through the Secret Warriors' lockers and found the Kree Orb in Lincoln Campbell's. Mackenzie reported his discovery to Coulson, who managed to lock the Secret Warriors into separate Containment Chambers. Mackenzie kept monitoring them in Coulson's office. Despite that, however, Daisy Johnson, who turned out to be swayed by Hive, escaped from the Playground, damaging the base in the process.
Introduction to Transhumanism
Mackenzie helped to manage the consequences of Daisy Johnson's Escape from the Playground and discussed the event with Melinda May, who noticed that nobody had been killed, meaning that Hive had no real interest in S.H.I.E.L.D. and just wanted Johnson to return with Terrigen Crystals and the Kree Orb. Mackenzie blamed himself for not having seen that Johnson had been swayed by Hive, but May told him not to do that. They then boarded the Zephyr One, and Mackenzie was surprised when May told him that they would take it out of the Playground with a dangerous maneuver, although he could not help but notice that May seemed enchanted by the perspective. Mackenzie then attended a briefing held by Phil Coulson, who assured his colleagues that they would bring Johnson back.
Thanks to investigations conducted by Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, Mackenzie was sent to Romania with them in order to track down Holden Radcliffe, a specialist in parasitic organisms and transhumanism enthusiast. They took a room in a hotel in Bucharest to devise their plan. When Fitz and Simmons explained that they would enter a select transhumanist club posing as geneticists, Mackenzie remarked that they would have to be properly dressed, only to be gently rebuffed and mocked for believing that Fitz and Simmons would use their lab coats to infiltrate the place. While they would enter the club, Mackenzie would remain at the hotel and follow their progression thanks to their Backscatter Glasses.
Mackenzie was greatly surprised when Fitz activated his glasses' scanner, revealing the different implants and robotic body parts used by the club's guests. While searching for Radcliffe, Fitz and Simmons were approached by his assistant Anon, and Mackenzie warned them that her seemingly normal body had actually been greatly enhanced with various devices and confessed his ignorance that such things were even possible. As they waited for Radcliffe, Mackenzie was told by Fitz and Simmons that they would reinitialize their comms, although Mackenzie experienced no trouble with them at all. However, he figured out that Fitz and Simmons actually wanted to have a private chat, being used to this trick since his work with Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse.
Once the comms were back online, Mackenzie witnessed the meeting between Fitz, Simmons, and Radcliffe, which turned south when Radcliffe suspected Fitz and Simmons to be agents of HYDRA and figured out that they were communicating with Mackenzie. When the comms were jammed by Anon's EMP, Mackenzie picked up a gun and resolved to go to the club himself. However, upon arriving, he was confronted by Hellfire, who had accompanied Hive and Johnson in an attempt to kidnap Radcliffe. Mackenzie was forced to take cover as Hellfire spread chaos in the club, making various objects explode. He then threw a bottle of alcohol at him, which hit another of Hellfire's projectile, and Mackenzie took advantage of the resulting explosion to retreat to safety.
Mackenzie returned to the hotel room, where he was reunited with Simmons, who was still shaken by her encounter with Hive. While waiting for Fitz to come back as well, Mackenzie and Simmons her relationship with him, and when Simmons told him that it was still new, Mackenzie disagreed, as they had actually known each other and been very close to each other for years, causing Simmons to smile. Before Fitz arrived, Mackenzie left to go to their Quinjet and to prepare for their return to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base.
- "The world's changing. We had to adapt. We had no choice. S.H.I.E.L.D. made us into what it needed."
"No. Nobody at S.H.I.E.L.D. made you do anything. But Coulson knew I was lost, so he'd offered up his team of misfit toys just to fill that emptiness."
"That team cares about you. I care about you."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson[src]
Back at the Playground, Mackenzie was informed by Phil Coulson that he had spotted Daisy Johnson in Union City, a formerly abandoned town in South Dakota. While Coulson feared that this could be a trap to lure S.H.I.E.L.D., Mackenzie was convinced that Johnson had unconsciously revealed herself for S.H.I.E.L.D. to try and save her despite Hive's sway. Despite Coulson disagreeing with him, Mackenzie was put in charge, along Melinda May of a mission in Union City in order to kill Hive. He thus boarded the Zephyr One with Coulson, May and a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, including Piper and O'Brien.
Arriving at Union City, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team spotted Hellfire, prompting May to go and meet him, posing as a HYDRA operative, in order to know Hive's whereabouts. Mackenzie listened to the whole conversation until Hellfire revealed where Hive was before being knocked out by May. Mackenzie and his team further progressed into the city and investigated the building where Hive was supposed to be. Although Hive was absent, they found a strange orb rapidly rotating and emitting light pulses. Recognizing Kree symbols on it and having seen something rapidly diving onto Union City, Coulson ordered Mackenzie and his teammates to retreat.
Indeed, a small satellite soon crashed in Union City, releasing two Kree Reapers who soon began a rampage across the town, killing HYDRA operatives and Inhumans alike while Mackenzie and his team silently watched. They were ordered by Coulson to follow the Kree Reapers, but upon feeling a tremor, Mackenzie knew that Johnson was around and, despite May advising against it, he decided to go and find her. He thus arrived in a garage where Johnson, who had just murdered one Reaper, was with Holden Radcliffe.
Thus began a long talk between Mackenzie and Johnson. Mackenzie did everything he could to convince Johnson to give up on Hive, but Johnson refused to hear him out, revealing in the process that their plan was to turn everyone, including Mackenzie, into Inhumans. Mackenzie still did his best to persuade Johnson, even lowering his shotgun to prove his good intentions, but to no avail as Johnson denied that they ever had a true connection. Realizing that Johnson was beyond his saving, Mackenzie attempted to thwart her plan and threw a Splinter Bomb at the Kree Reaper's corpse, thus preventing Johnson and Radcliffe to harvest his blood Hive needed.
This greatly angered Johnson, who brutally attacked Mackenzie with her powers. Despite Mackenzie refusing to fight against her, he was violently beaten up by Johnson, who punched him, kicked him and even broke his arm. As he lied on the ground, Mackenzie begged Johnson to stop, but Johnson further attacked him, using her abilities on Mackenzie's chest and causing him immense pain. Nevertheless, Mackenzie was rescued by the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, who shot Johnson and called for an emergency module to evacuate. Mackenzie was taken back to the Playground, where he was healed by Jemma Simmons and informed his colleagues of Hive's terrific plans.
Partners Once More
While he was still on recovery, Mackenzie was informed that Yo-Yo Rodriguez had returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to help in getting Daisy Johnson back. Mackenzie was not satisfied with it, as he feared that Rodriguez could also be swayed by Hive and voiced his doubts that they could even win against him, but Rodriguez told him to have faith in their chances of success as long as they all remained strong.
Mackenzie then tried to help Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons to keep Johnson out of the Playground's systems as she attempted to have Lincoln Campbell escape from the base and join her. Although they managed to lock down the systems, Mackenzie correctly figured out that Johnson could hack into the Quinjets to enable Campbell to escape. Since Fitz was left unable to access the aircrafts' systems, Mackenzie headed to the Playground's landing bay to stop Campbell himself. He tackled him and attempted to stop Campbell, but the young Inhuman used his powers to break free, knocking Mackenzie out.
Mackenzie was found by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Glenn Talbot, seeing a Quinjet taking off as they spoke. However, it turned out that Campbell had actually not escaped. Indeed, this had all been part of a secret plan between Coulson, Campbell and Melinda May, to make Hive and Johnson believe that Campbell would join them. Mackenzie received Campbell's apologies for having attacked him, claiming that he had to make things look real. When he learned that they had sent Lash instead of Campbell to kill Hive, Mackenzie worried that he could kill Johnson instead, but Campbell insisted that this was unlikely as it was not Lash's purpose.
Despite Lash dying in this endeavor, being murdered by Hellfire before he could kill Hive, the plan was successful in that it allowed Johnson to be freed from Hive's influence and to return to the Playground. Mackenzie was present when she came back at the base, visibly affected by her whole experience with Hive. He then returned to his bedroom where he was visited by Rodriguez. Mackenzie expressed his willingness to stand and fight against Hive, and he was given a golden cross by Rodriguez for him to keep faith in their mission.
Capture of Hive
Since S.H.I.E.L.D. was informed that Hive had stolen a nuclear warhead in order to launch his Absolution Virus, Mackenzie was sent on a mission with Melinda May, Lincoln Campbell and Yo-Yo Rodriguez to rescue the staff of a Pacific Missile Silo and prevent Hive from completing his plans. During their flight using their Quinjet as a submarine, Mackenzie was given the controllers of Campbell's and Rodriguez's Nanothermite Vests in case they fell under Hive's influence.
The team successfully approached the silo without being seen and managed to infiltrate the facility. While May and Campbell left to establish an uplink so that they could override the missile commands with a kill code, Mackenzie worked on installing the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine in a corridor for it to be used on Hive. However, Mackenzie was criticized by Rodriguez for working too slowly. As they discussed the possibility of Rodriguez being swayed by Hive, Mackenzie offered to return her cross to her, but she refused, claiming that he could not give such a gift back.
Campbell then arrived and warned them that Hive was coming. Although Mackenzie had not finished and told the two Inhumans to leave, Rodriguez used her superhuman speed to complete the task, enabling Campbell to activate the machine which caused intense pain to Hive since all the memories of the people he had used as vessels resurfaced. When Hive managed to state that it would not kill him, Mackenzie replied that it could still hurt him. He then left with Rodriguez and Campbell in order to prepare for the evacuation of the hostages.
As they successfully gathered the silo's staff towards the Quinjet, the team was found by Hive. Thanks to Rodriguez's speed, S.H.I.E.L.D. was able to lock him in a Suspension Gel chamber, with Mackenzie barely realizing that they were able to capture Hive without losing anyone. They then returned to the Playground with their captive.
Forgiving Daisy Johnson
Back to the Playground, Mackenzie discussed with Phil Coulson and Lincoln Campbell about the impending lockdown of the base to protect themselves from Hive's followers. Mackenzie was then surprised when he heard Campbell claiming that he intended to leave S.H.I.E.L.D. for good once everything would be over since he felt that there was nothing for him in S.H.I.E.L.D. as he could not give Daisy Johnson what she needed. Since they addressed the matter, Mackenzie suggested that they should inform Johnson about the capture of Hive and, given Coulson's reluctance to do so, he decided to do it himself.
Mackenzie went to the Containment Chamber where Johnson was locked in and told her that they had caught Hive. When Johnson told him that he should be in a Containment Module to remain safe from her, mentioning what had happened between them during the Battle of Union City, Mackenzie stated that he had forgiven her. Despite Johnson rejecting this, Mackenzie calmly repeated it and approached Johnson, managing to hug her as she burst into tears after she tried to push him away.
Once Johnson had calmed down, Mackenzie and she discussed the evil nature of Hive, with Mackenzie assuming that Hive was not the biblical Devil. When Johnson insisted that Hive had to be destroyed, Mackenzie explained that she should not let herself being overrun by anger and desire of revenge, claiming that they would all be safe once the base would be locked down. Minutes later, however, Mackenzie and Johnson watched on a screen how a cargo of Absolution Virus was released in the landing bay. Mackenzie then figured out that Hive intended to use the Zephyr One as his means to unleash the virus on Earth and returned to Coulson's office to inform his colleagues about it.
Due to the invasion of the Playground by Primitives commanded by Hive, Mackenzie joined his S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues in order to discuss their next move. Along with Yo-Yo Rodriguez, he went to the base's armory in order to secure as many weapons as he could so that the Primitives would not find them, but they figured out that they were too late. One Primitive attempted to shoot at Mackenzie before fleeing, and Mackenzie was horrified to discover that Rodriguez had actually used her superhuman speed to catch the bullets in his place, and had received one in the stomach.
Mackenzie tried to carry Rodriguez to safety and encountered Phil Coulson, Lincoln Campbell and Holden Radcliffe, who were running away from a group of Primitives. Therefore, they all retreated to a workshop room, where they struggled to find a way to tend to Rodriguez's wound. Despite their reluctance, they could only come up with the idea of using a blowtorch on the wound to make it stop bleeding, and Mackenzie agreed to perform the deed on Rodriguez. Once he was over, he told Rodriguez never to catch a bullet for him again. They then noticed how the temperature had increased and figured out that Jemma Simmons had boosted the base's heating to hijack the Primitives' infrared vision.
This enabled Mackenzie and his teammates to leave the room and to reach the Director's office, where they were reunited with Simmons who informed them that Leo Fitz and Melinda May had boarded the Zephyr One before it was taken out of the Playground by Hive. When Coulson announced that he would call a Quinjet to reach the Zephyr One alone and take down Hive himself, Mackenzie, Simmons, and Campbell categorically refused this order and took the Quinjet as well. They then infiltrated into the Zephyr One while Coulson distracted Hive with a hologram. However, while they were progressing in the plane, Campbell was attacked and heavily wounded by Hellfire.
Now reunited with Daisy Johnson, who remained at Campbell's side, the team discussed Coulson's plan: sending the warhead containing the Absolution Virus in space with a Quinjet, so that it would cause no harm on Earth. However, this required someone to sacrifice themselves to make sure that the plan succeeded. Mackenzie insisted that he preferred to remain in the Zephyr One and fight against the Primitives and Hive as he had brought his whole new homemade weapon with him: a Shotgun-Axe. Seconds later, they realized that Johnson had left to complete Coulson's plan and they were attacked by a group of Primitives. Mackenzie thus used his Shotgun-Axe to take them down, fighting with his colleagues to repel them.
However, it turned out that during their fight, Campbell had managed to trap both Hive and the warhead in the Quinjet and to force Johnson to get out of the aircraft. Mackenzie and the rest of the team then helplessly realized that there was nothing they could do to bring Campbell to Earth and that they had to accept his sacrifice, despite Johnson pleas to find another solution. Therefore, Mackenzie sadly remained silent as they waited for the Quinjet to be destroyed along with Hive and Campbell, thus sealing S.H.I.E.L.D.'s victory with a heavy loss, which would later be even more serious when Johnson would decide to leave S.H.I.E.L.D., prompting Mackenzie and Coulson to chase her and bring her back.
A Rogue Agent
- "You know the rules about fraternizing with assets in the field."
"Oh, we haven't fraternized anything yet. And I thought you were breaking the rules, coming to do my checkup early just to see me. Or are you here because, uh, there's been a lot of little earthquakes lately?"
"Daisy could be in the area."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Yo-Yo Rodriguez[src]
Some time later, Mackenzie and Phil Coulson would return from a six weeks mission when they were called back to the Playground though they were not told the reason of this unexpected change of schedule. They were greeted by Melinda May who informed them that they were off their mission of finding Johnson as they had repeatedly failed to catch her. However, May informs them that Johnson was spotted in Los Angeles, giving them some time to try to find her before S.H.I.E.L.D. went on an official mission to capture her. Mackenzie and Coulson go to the lab to greet Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz, who has been working on a new version of Coulson's Prosthetic Hand.
Before they can return to the mission, Mackenzie is found by Yo-Yo Rodriguez which he awkwardly asks her about the trip to Miami. Which led her to start flirting with him, but due to the Accords they cannot be fraternize with each other. Mackenzie revealed to Rodriguez that the real reason why he and Coulson were in Los Angeles was to search for Johnson.
Mackenzie and Coulson left the Playground looking for a missing member of the Aryan Brotherhood and a truck stolen by his organization. They go to Canelo's Auto and Body where they were able to find the truck and discovered several slaughtered bodies with jackets featuring the logo of the Cosmogenic company. Mackenzie and Coulson decide to investigate a Cosmogenic facility and attend the arrival of the Chinatown Crew who are reclaiming some mysterious equipment. After they opened the box they had come for, the mobsters were made insane by a strange mist and began killing each other. Before Mackenzie and Coulson could intervene, May's Team appeared and helped them with the mission. Several members of the Chinatown Crew, turned out to be affiliated with the Watchdogs, were captured and taken aboard the Zephyr One. Mackenzie returned to the Playground with the rest of the team.
Dealing With Ghosts
Mackenzie comes in the lab to talk with Simmons and Fitz and told them that S.H.I.E.L.D. had heard someone else is suffering from the same kind of dementia than the Chinese mobsters who had been in contact with the box. Mackenzie mentioned the vision of a ghost, which he is shown footage of Lucy Bauer, who looked like a spectrum. Mackenzie decided to go and investigate the facility of Momentum Labs with Fitz.
Mackenzie and Fitz arrive at the facility, which they discover a mysterious room at the center of which was a strange reactor. However they were attacked by another person, called Frederick. Mackenzie shot at him only for him to vanish, this cause Mackenzie and Fitz to quickly realized that they were powerless facing such an opponent. Mackenzie is then locked in the reactor by Frederick, who them threatens to kill Fitz by blowing up the facility. However, Robbie Reyes stops Frederick from killing Mackenzie and Fitz, by turning into Ghost Rider and eliminating Frederick. Mackenzie is released for the reactor.
Following a series of nationwide blackouts, Mackenzie, Phil Coulson and Leo Fitz were sent on a mission by Jeffrey Mace to Miami in order to solve the crisis. On the way, they watched a TV interview of Senator Ellen Nadeer, calling on war against the Inhumans. The team arrived, where they intended to pick up fellow agent Elena Rodriguez. However due to the attackers using a perpetual EMP device which disabled all their electronic equipment the car stopped, as soon as they entered into the blackout zone, meaning they had to find the EMP source using the old way.
Mackenzie, Coulson and Fitz arrive to the hotel which had been stormed by a team of Watchdogs searching for an Inhuman who is Rodriguez. They managed to knock the Watchdogs out and proceeded to interrogate them. They learn that the Watchdogs had staged the blackouts to blame the Inhumans and hunt them down, using a mole in the Inhumans Registration Index. Fitz comes up with an idea to location of the EMP source and use Mackenzie, Coulson and Rodriguez help which they manage to turn off the EMP source and arrested the Watchdogs before reporting their success to Mace.
Mackenzie returns to the Playground, Mackenzie and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents watches the press conference of Mace announcing that S.H.I.E.L.D. is going public, they wondering if going public was such a good idea as he appreciated working in the shadows.
Meeting Ghost Rider
Mackenzie and Coulson goes to visit Eli Morrow, when they were done Mackenzie recognized Robbie Reyes in his Hell Charger and told Coulson that he was Ghost Rider, so Mackenzie and Coulson chased him with Lola. After a hot pursuit, the Hell Charger violently hit a cloaked Quinjet, knocking out Ghost Rider who was taken in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody and locked into the Zephyr One's Containment Module.
With Ghost Rider finally awake, Mackenzie and Coulson learn about the Bauers' project of building a Quantum Particle Generator using the knowledge within an ancient book. However, before S.H.I.E.L.D. could investigate further, they received an alert about Hellfire, who was allegedly targeted by the Watchdogs. However, it soon turned out that Hellfire, despite being an Inhuman himself, had betrayed his own kind and worked with the Watchdogs to kill every Inhuman. Mackenzie, Coulson and Ghost Rider flied to Primed and Ready Fireworks and defeated the Watchdogs, capturing Hellfire and rescuing Simmons and Quake in the process. Later, Mackenzie would help Coulson rescue Melinda May from Radcliffe Residence, who could finally come back into service after her infection by the ghostly virus.
Mission in the Prison
Mackenzie and Coulson visited Joseph Bauer in his hospital room as he had come out of his coma due to his wife Lucy Bauer. However, Joseph died from the ghostly infection after telling Mackenzie and Coulson that his wife had probably retrieved the Darkhold. Mackenzie returned on the Zephyr One where Coulson devise a plan of action and they decided to go back to the South Ridge Penitentiary to enlist Eli Morrow's assistance. They loaded into the Containment Module which took them to the growd where split up into two teams, Daisy Johnson and two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents went to find Coulson while Mackenzie and Reyes searched for Morrow, who they assumed the ghosts were targeting, noting that the guards would likely be infected.
Once inside, Mackenzie and Reyes meets Santino Noguera a member of the Fifth Street Locos, stepping over to Noguera, Reyes almost lost control by Mackenzie pulls him away and promised Reyes that he'll put him down if he loses control of his powers, but Reyes assured him he would not be using his power and he needed to keep his secret hidden from his uncle.
As they stepped into the boiler room, Mackenzie and Reyes were both cornered by the two ghosts following Bauer, with Mackenzie then shooting Vincent with his Shotgun-Axe with no effect. Reyes armed himself with the Hellfire Chain and ripped Vincent in half, dropping it as it now burned red hot. However Hugo then appeared and infected Mackenzie with the psychosis by walking through him and smiling at the effect, only for Reyes to use his own powers to burn Hugo and destroy him. Mackenzie gave himself the antidote.
As the situation within the prison deteriorated into a riot, Mackenzie and Reyes found Morrow and explained that they were breaking him out of prison. Mackenzie used the Pick-Lock Device to break open his door and they made their way out, despite Morrow being unhappy at S.H.I.E.L.D.'s involvement under it was explained that Bauer had gained powers and was in possession of the Darkhold. With the situation getting worse, Mackenzie ordered Reyes and Morrow to go on without him so he could help some trapped members of the prison staff.
Mackenzie meets up with Coulson and Johnson, where Reyes joins them and asks Mackenzie questioned where his uncle was, Mackenzie made it clear that he did not know, noting that he had left them alone together. The team would find out that Lucy Bauer had found and kidnapped Morrow during the chaos of the riot and they had no idea where they had gone.

Mackenzie joined Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Leo Fitz and Ghost Rider at the Roxxon Corporation power plant in an effort to stop Bauer, Mackenzie and Fitz headed to the power plant's control room to shut down the systems. Mackenzie and Fitz discover that they could not stop the systems, prompting Mackenzie to head back to the Zephyr One as well to fetch an EMP device.
The New Ghost Rider
Mackenzie and Melinda May returned to the Roxxon Corporation power plant after the outburst and discovered that Phil Coulson, Leo Fitz and Ghost Rider were missing. They also found out that Eli Morrow had killed four S.H.I.E.L.D. agents before escaping. Mackenzie returned to the Zephyr One, where they watched the video feed showing the complete disappearance of Coulson, Fitz and Reyes. After discussing with Jeffrey Mace, the team decided to call for Jemma Simmons' help. Mackenzie advised against May idea of using the Darkhold to bring Coulson, Fitz and Reyes back.
Mackenzie leaves the attack agent Davis and use his motorbike to drive off the plane to find Morrow, despite all Daisy Johnson's best efforts to stop him. Mackenzie drove his motorbike right into the Chinatown Crew Headquarters. He immediately shot a bandit with his Shotgun-Axe and made his way through the Hideout until he found Zhi. Grabbing the thug, Mackenzie interrogated him to know Morrow's whereabouts. Once he got all the answers he needed, Mackenzie brutally murdered Zhi.
Mackenzie is met with Quake who drove the Hell Charger to the Hideout as well, unaware that Robbie Reyes had accompanied and guided her all along. Mackenzie is found by Quake who was talking with Reyes unknowingly to her, Mackenzie then transforms himself into Ghost Rider in front of her.
Mackenzie is about to attack Quake where Reyes discuss a deal with the Spirit of Vengeance. The Spirit of Vengeance claimed that he could not take the risk to be taken into Hell and that he would use Mackenzie as a host for his revenge activities, feeding on his pain of having lost his daughter Hope Mackenzie. However, Reyes is able to cut a deal with the Spirit of Vengeance offering to make a new one so that they could find Morrow together. Mackenzie's body is freed and the Spirit of Vengeance return back to Robbie.
In the aftermath, Mackenzie sits in a room on the Playground and stared at a picture of Hope. When Reyes return in the Earthly Plane through the Inter-Dimensional Gate, Mackenzie is asked by Reyes to help take down Morrow which he agreed.
A Relationship in Progress
Mackenzie is observes a mission that Yo-Yo Rodriguez, Quake and Ghost Rider when a cesium bomb system installed by Morrow and was violently ejected out by the blast, fortunately suffering only light wounds. Mackenzie insisted for Rodriguez to be checked by Jemma Simmons, but she bluntly refused.
Mackenzie, Jeffrey Mace and Melinda May arrive and fought Morrow's men, in the aftermath of the battle, Ghost Rider prevent Morrow from escaping, sacrificing himself so that the Quantum Battery would be transferred through an Inter-Dimensional Gate, saving Los Angeles. Mackenzie returned to the Playground where to celebrate their victory, Mackenzie and Rodriguez finally resolved to let their feelings blossom and shared a kiss before joining the others.

When Holden Radcliffe and Leo Fitz returned to the Playground, Mackenzie voices his concerns about Aida. Shortly after, Mackenzie and Coulson is met with Radcliffe who explains that the Darkhold is likely the cause of Aida's rebellion, giving her the desire to be a living being. Aida attacks the Playground and demands to be delivered the Darkhold, Mackenzie teams up with Elena Rodriguez when they had to face Aida's assaults, who remotely took control of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjets in order to keep them from coming after her. While Aida tried to escape the Playground, Mackenzie uses his Shotgun-Axe to behead Aida.
Jeffrey Mace's Lie
While Jeffrey Mace gave a speech in order to formally acknowledge that Quake had worked with S.H.I.E.L.D. all along, Mackenzie and Phil Coulson ensured the safety of the crowd. However, one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was missing on a roof. Immediately after, the Watchdogs attacked in an attempt to assassinate Mace. Mackenzie and Coulson took Mace and Burrows to a nearby Quinjet in order to evacuate the Director. However, while discussing the assault, the Quinjet was also attacked and crashed in Freyer National Park, killing agents Burrows and McCafferty and Mackenzie, Coulson and Mace with no opportunity to call for backup.
While searching for Burrows, Mackenzie and the others heard the sound of an engine, quickly spotting a radio truck hijacking their communications. Mackenzie and Coulson wanted to stop and destroy the truck, but Mace was keen on finding Burrows and especially the briefcase he was carrying. They quickly stumbled on a Watchdogs squad who had seized Burrows and the briefcase. Mackenzie and Coulson assaulted the Watchdogs, but Mace, instead of doing the same, just reclaimed the briefcase and ran away before being shot and nearly killed by a Watchdog member. It soon turned out that Mace was not an Inhuman after all, but was rather using a super-serum to gain his super strength, all according Glenn Talbot's plan.
Mace's lie drastically changed their situation as there were more Watchdogs to fight. The three S.H.I.E.L.D. agents took refuge in a wooden cabin, where Mackenzie took down the radio truck and more Watchdogs. Quake and Melinda May arrived as reinforcements and helped them defeating the last soldiers.
Mackenzie receives a text message from his ex-wife Nicole about the death of daughter, and informs Yo-Yo Rodriguez that he cannot join the mission and that he has something else to do. Returning to the Playground, Mackenzie returns from his personal time and tells Rodriguez the real reason of his absence, he went to see his ex-wife Nicole to support her since the day after is the birthday of the daughter they had together eleven years ago and who died four days after being born.
Interrogating Holden Radcliffe's LMD
Mackenzie interrogate the Holden Radcliffe LMD with Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons in order to find out where the real Radcliffe was and what his plans were. However, the questioning did not go well when they discovered that they were unable to hack into the LMD's systems. When the android began to provoke Fitz, mentioning his father, causing him to become angry. This cause Mackenzie to ask Simmons about Fitz's father which Simmons told Mackenzie that he was abusive towards him.
Retrieving Agnes Kitsworth
Mackenzie and Phil Coulson learned about Agnes Kitsworth, Holden Radcliffe's former girlfriend. The agents flied to Caldes de Montbui to find Kitsworth. Mackenzie and Coulson approached Kitsworth and showed her a picture of Aida, which was an exact replica of Kitsworth. Kitsworth reluctantly told them about her relationship with Radcliffe and that the scientist left him because he could not cure her from a brain tumor.
Coulson found Kitsworth's address and intended to arrest her, but Mackenzie advised him against it and refused to be part of it. After Coulson talk with Kitsworth, she agreed to help the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents with their mission of finding Radcliffe. But during the mission Kitsworth escaped before Mackenzie and Coulson could arrest him.
Captured and Replaced
- "You built a Matrix prison, and now May's stuck in it like Brainscan."
"The Framework is a tool. That's all that it is – a tool."
"Mm. Like Aida was a tool?
"What are you trying to say? That all this is my fault?"
"What I'm saying is, if you didn't build a killer robot or a virtual world, this year would've been much easier for us. Now, whether you like it or not, that's the reality."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Leo Fitz[src]
This section needs a rewrite
Mackenzie listens to Leo Fitz talk about the Framework as he describe it as a virtual area where they could train and practice with an extreme level of sensations and detail. Mackenzie was very critical towards the Framework and voiced his critic to Fitz, reminding him that many of the ordeals S.H.I.E.L.D. had to overcome in the recent days was a more or less direct consequence of Fitz's designs.
Mackenzie, Phil Coulson, Daisy Johnson, Jemma Simmons and Fitz go to Russia to rescue Jeffrey Mace, Mackenzie was found a weakened Mace and proceeded to rescue him. However, the three of them were captured by Aida, replaced with Life-Model Decoys and plugged into the Framework.
Life in a HYDRA World
Once day, Mackenzie was told by his daughter that she had used parts of a destroyed D.W.A.R.F she had previously found in a park. Mackenzie was distraught by the revelation, worried that they would be found out. While waiting for the bus, HYDRA agents arrive and check their IDs. Mackenzie got worried when Hope tells him that the D.W.A.R.F.s is in her bag, but fortunately an Inhuman distracted the HYDRA agents by trying to run away. Mackenzie and his daughter returned to their home where they discussed the fate of the Inhuman with Hope wondering why Inhumans were being arrested. Mackenzie reassured her and they decided to watch a movie to forget what had happened.
Without warning, HYDRA led by Melinda May stormed in the Mackenzie's home, they immediately seized Mackenzie and his daughter and brought them to the Triskelion for further questioning. Mackenzie was questioned by May, afterward, Mackenzie is met with Skye who was used by May to trick Johnson into admitting her allegiance to S.H.I.E.L.D.. Mackenzie and his daughter are released after helping HYDRA, which Mackenzie whispering "Hail HYDRA" to May.
Mackenzie would go to the Playground and join S.H.I.E.L.D. which the Patriot agree for him to join. Mackenzie would bring his daughter for safety, Mackenzie watches the news with Grant Ward and Patriot when Sunil Bakshi disclosed the identities of Skye and Melinda May who had escaped from the Triskelion and severely injured Madame Hydra. This cause Hope to fear for Skye, which Mackenzie comforted her and told her not to trust the information provided by HYDRA.
Rescuing Daisy Johnson
Mackenzie would go on a rescue mission, before leaving he asked Mrs. Lee to watch her as he goes and rescue Skye. While Melinda May and Skye are hold at gunpoint by HYDRA agents, Mackenzie, Phil Coulson and Burrows arrive to save them, who had been warned by the agent responsible of the meeting point, arrived in time to rescue them. Although Mackenzie was ready to kill May as well because of what she had done to his daughter, Johnson and Coulson convinced him otherwise. Afterwards, Burrows led them to a secret exit and all of them went to the Playground.
Choice for a Virtual Life
- "I don't want to live in a world without Hope."
"But it's not real. You saw it with your own eyes, it's a computer program. All of it. Even Hope."
"She laughs at my jokes. We watch movies together. And when she's sad... When she's sad, I hold her. No. She's real to me."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson[src]
Mackenzie and Hope were about to leave the Playground to return to their home, when Daisy Johnson tells them that they need Mackenzie to join on a mission, at first Mackenzie doesn't want to go until his daughter encourage him to go since he had been used to incarcerate Johnson. Mackenzie, Melinda May, Jemma Simmons, Johnson and Phil Coulson all go to the location to escape from the Framework.
Mackenzie had not been told about the existence of another world that they considered real and blamed Johnson for having brought him far from his daughter Hope. After Coulson escape the Framework the computerized pattern of the Framework was briefly revealed, much to Mackenzie's shock. Mackenzie is not convinced to leave his virtual life, which he refused as he was not ready to give up on the happiness of being with his daughter, even if it was a simulation.
Back to Reality
- "I feel terrible that I tried to pull you away from her and worse that we couldn't save her. Can you forgive me?"
"There's nothing to forgive. Those years with her, as a father, it'll always be a part of me. But they also gave me a glimpse of a life I could have here... with you."
- ―Elena Rodriguez and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
At the Ivanov Oil Platform, Mackenzie is still trapped in the Framework and could not be woken up from the real world. Before Phil Coulson and Elena Rodriguez could go back to save Mackenzie, the Platform exploded. Fortunately, Mackenzie is saved by Aida and Leo Fitz by teleporting Mackenzie and his Framework equipment to the Zephyr One.
Mackenzie would return to the Playground where he is met with Antoine Triplett, who was looking after Hope. Mackenzie was glad to see his daughter, although he hasn't told is daughter about what happen.
Mackenzie and his daughter stayed at the Playground but soon packed her bag as Mackenzie was organizing its evacuation. She also met Rodriguez, who had come to take him out of the Framework. Mackenzie took a bus with other refugees, when they were stuck in traffic as everyone was trying to leave. All of a sudden, the whole bridge disappeared with all the cars on it, as well as the other refugees of the bus, due to Aida shutting down the Framework.
Mackenzie returned home with his daughter, Rodriguez and Holden Radcliffe which Rodriguez started a conversation with Mack about returning to the real world, which Mackenzie refuse and comfort Hope. Shortly after, a door appeared in their living room, created by Johnson as an exit, but Mackenzie refused to go. Mackenzie and Hope would witness the vanishing of more and more objects. Mackenzie is told by Hope that she doesn't want to die, but Mackenzie could not stop the phenomenon and Hope was deleted from the Framework. This would cause Mackenzie to return back with Rodriguez.
Trapped in the Future
Arrival at the Lighthouse
After the defeat and death of Aida, the team would go to Rae's Restaurant where they enjoy a meal and—with the exception of Leo Fitz—were captured by Enoch and sent forward in time through the White Monolith. Waking up on a spaceship, Mackenzie knocked Virgil unconscious before he can answer Phil Coulson, who thought that Virgil was threatening Coulson. Mackenzie and Coulson reunite with Elena Rodriguez and Jemma Simmons as they find several drained bodies. Together, they try to figure out their situation and to wake Virgil up.
As Mackenzie and Coulson bicker about leaving S.H.I.E.L.D., Virgil finally regains consciousness, giving Coulson leeway into answers of where they are in the universe. Virgil tells them that he knows all of them and that he knew that the S.H.I.E.L.D. would come and save humanity, much to the agents' disbelief. However, Virgil is killed by a Vrellnexian before finishing his explanations, forcing the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to flee. While the party gets stuck in the dead end, Quake finds them and kills the Vrellnexian. The party finds a relatively secure place and discuss their options, deciding to remain together.
Mackenzie and Rodriguez are attacked by the Kree and tortured and interrogation, before Quake arrives just in time to keep two Kree interrogators from breaking both Rodriguez's arms and releasing Mackenzie and Rodriguez, which leads to the death of the Kree.
Mackenzie, Yo-Yo Rodriguez and Quake is found by Deke Shaw who is upset and yelled at the trio for killing the Kree guards. Mackenzie suggested taking the Kree to where the other bodies were so the roaches could dine on them, which Shaw argued that they can't be seen in the elevator with two dead Kree. Mackenzie suggested they put them on top of the elevator, to which Shaw agreed with.
On the way up to Level 3, Mackenzie made note that Shaw didn't mention the elevator had a sky lite and that the Kree bodies could be seen. The elevator soon stopped and a Kree soldier entered. Just when it seemed the group was going to be caught, they felt a whoosh and the blood drop was gone. After the Kree left the elevator, Mackenzie and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents is asked by Shaw what had happened.
Mackenzie and the agents drag the guards to where the roaches were and told them not to kill anymore Kree. After the four dragged the bodies into the room where the roaches were, they would met up with the others, they learned that Jemma Simmons was taken up to Kasius.
Mackenzie, Rodriguez and Phil Coulson manage to steal a Kree tablet possibly containing valuable information, but then notice that people are gathering in the corridors under Kree supervision. Feeling that having no Metrics could be a problem, Coulson asks Grill, whom he met before, to implant the devices on them in exchange for the tablet.
However, Mackenzie, Rodriguez and Coulson quickly figured out that this would be a problem once they would encounter a Kree guard. Therefore, Coulson went to Grill, and asked him to put Metrics on them in exchange for a Kree tablet they had stolen earlier. Although Grill stated that the tablet was not worth three Metrics, he admitted that the person able to steal it was and he accepted the deal, provided that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would also work for him.
While Grill implanted the Metrics, the Kree Watch finished the scan and selected the people having earned the least, leaving a shotgun for them to use in their fight to the death. Which, several people saw their Metrics turn red, which caused massive rush in the Lighthouse, with those selected running to the shotgun while the others left to avoid the fight. Holt managed to pick up the shotgun and headed to the Salvage as he blamed Grill for his low wages, while several other residents killed each other across the Lighthouse.
Mackenzie, Rodriguez and Coulson's Metrics had been tampered by Grill so that he was able to pin them against a wall while he and his right-hand-man Zev hid in safety. When Holt arrived and confronted Grill about not being paid, Grill answered that he could kill the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in exchange for his own life. Before Holt could do so, however, Melinda May intervened and disarmed him. Holt claimed that he owed a life and attacked May, but he was shot down by Tess who had picked up the shotgun. As May told Tess that Holt did not have to die, Tess retorted that someone had to.
Holt being the last victim of the Renewal, the Kree Watch arrived in the Salvage to confirm his death. They scanned the Metrics of the people present, and when they remarked that the Metrics of Mackenzie, Rodriguez and Coulson were not regular, Grill swore that they worked for him and that they would for a long time.
Mackenzie, Yo-Yo Rodriguez and Phil Coulson have been recruited by Grill, for they work for him. While working, Mackenzies sees Yo-Yo Rodriguez being tased by Zev. In an attempt to learn what is inside Grill's office, Mackenzie tried to walk into his office to personally confront him, but his metric prevented him from doing so. Grill told Mackenzie that it wouldn't work and that he doesn't like people slacking off his work. After failing, Mackenzie returned to Coulson and Rodrieguz, telling them that he discovered Grill keeping an advanced technological Kree scroll in his office and the group plan to steal it. Melinda May and Tess returns from a flight with the Trawler, Mackenzie and Coulson are sent by Grill for another mission. As they board the Trawler, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents find out that Virgil may have hid something on the Earth's surface to help them get back home. Just as Tess reluctantly decides to go with them, Zev goes with them after Grill ordered him to in order to find out what Virgil had down on Earth.
Once in space, Mackenzie kept Zev distracted by being tased until the team discovers that Virgil was using a radio to communicate with someone but before they could investigate further, they are spotted by Zev, who tries to stop them. After skirmishing around in the Trawler, Mackenzie destroys the taser and knocks out Zev, much to Tess' dismay. They eventually receive a transmission and discover that the signal is coming from the surface of the destroyed Earth. As Zev continued yelling to be let out, Coulson attempts to make contact with someone on the chunk of Earth rock but fails. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Tess begin to argue, as Tess wants to kill Zev and drop his body into space, making it sound like an accident, but the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents refuse, with Mackenzie telling Tess that S.H.I.E.L.D. lives a by a code that is nothing like the rules at the Lighthouse. Because Zev disconnected the fuel line to the Trawler, the team are forced to return to the Lighthouse.
When they return, Tess and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are confronted by an angry Grill about their expedition. Fearing that Grill will kill them all, Rodriguez plants a gun in Zev's jacket to distract Grill. The plan works and Grill sends Zev onto the surface on the Earth to be devoured by Vrellnexians. The next day, Mackenzie fixes the transmitter box and they receive a clear transmission from someone talking about "the delegation". Coulson finds out that S.H.I.E.L.D. was the delegation and someone knew of their whereabouts, but Tess tells them that it was impossible, as people were sent to Earth's surface to die.
- "I survived the pain of losing my real child, but I can't get over the pain of losing a fake one, so what kind of a father does that make me? Maybe Gunner was right about me. Maybe I really am already lost."
"Hey. Hope might not have been real, but your love for her was. And that makes you a great father and a good man."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Yo-Yo Rodriguez[src]
After regrouping in the Lighthouse, Mackenzie left to check with the guys working at the docking bay, asking them if they had seen Daisy Johnson boarding one of the ships to move between the levels, but did not find her. He returns to Phil Coulson and Melinda May where he told them of the current situation until he is tased by Grill, who told him it was funnier to shock him since he's bigger. Before leaving, Grill ordered Mackenzie to come with him. Once in private, Grill tells Mackenzie about another Lighthouse inhabitant named Gunner who hasn't paid him back his debt that he owed him and ordered Mackenzie to beat up Gunner into getting his tokens back. When Mackenzie asked why he picked him, Grill said that Zev was dead and he was the only one left that fits the role.
Mackenzie returns to Coulson, May and Yo-Yo Rodriguez, who tell him that he needs to do so if Grill will leave them alone for even a little while. Coulson then tells Mackenzie to go with Rodriguez to try to talk to Gunner first to avoid confrontation. Mackenzie and Rodriguez find Gunner in the Lighthouse, but before walking up to him, Rodriguez tells Mack to express his feelings about beating up a man, with Mack saying the idea makes him sick. When Rodriguez countered, Mackenzie said he doesn't want them to be compromised like Leo Fitz was after he left the Framework, but Rodriguez promised to Mack that they wouldn't become like Fitz.
When Gunner went to his private bunk, Mackenzie and Rodriguez barge in and say that Grill wants his money. Gunner tells them that Grill will get his money when he feels like it and that he isn't afraid of them. Rodriguez gestures to Mack that he will pound him if he doesn't pay up. Gunner tries to convince them that Grill will get his pay, and that he doesn't want trouble. Mackenzie rushes in to grab him and tells him that the package he is waiting for won't come to him and be put in the crushing mill if he doesn't cooperate, unbeknownst to Mack that the package is really Gunner's newborn baby.
Gunner, disgusted with this, verbally threatens Mackenzie, saying that no one would threaten a child like that. Mackenzie tried to apologize, but Gunner continues by telling him that people who make threats like that to a baby don't deserve one. Engulfed with rage, Mackenzie wailed on Gunner with Rodriguez trying to pull him off. When he stopped, he stumbled outside the room as Gunner coughed up blood. After recovering, Mack and Rodriguez regrouped with Coulson, who told him about the package being a baby. Once Coulson was done interrogating Deke Shaw, Mack locked him up in the room and gave the Rhodium coin that was given to Deke by Kasius to Gunner and his wife to use.
After the incident, Mackenzie stood alone in Grill's workshop before being confronted by Rodriguez. He tells her about the irony of him telling her not to lose herself when it was he who lost it. Rodriguez told him that Gunner didn't know what he was saying, but Mackenzie didn't justify his actions of lashing out on him and began doubting himself as being a great father. Mackenzie broke down when he thought about when the real Hope and the fake hope died, and expressing how hard it is to overcome the pain of losing both. Rodriguez counters, saying that he truly loved the Framework Hope, the same love he had for the real one, which makes him a great father and a good man. Grill interrupts the two, saying that like him after getting his pay, frustrating Mackenzie.

Journey to 1931
To be added
Despite being a large and intimidating figure, Mackenzie will often avoid violence and attempt to find a peaceful solution to dangerous situations, waiting to get all the facts straight. When Robert Gonzales was assassinated by Jiaying, Mackenzie advised Coulson to settle the situation as peacefully as possible rather than go to war with the Inhumans. However, when his friends are endangered, Mackenzie is more than willing to risk his life and kill those who threaten the people around him. When the Inhumans attacked and killed his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Mackenzie went out of his way to protect them by fighting Gordon to the death, and when the Advanced Threat Containment Unit attempted to arrest Daisy Johnson, Mackenzie threatened the life of Luther Banks by pointing a gun to his head.
Mackenzie is also a very compassionate man, being the only person to truly listen to Leo Fitz as he suffered the effects of brain damage, becoming a key part of his recovery. Daisy Johnson described Mackenzie as a big teddy bear to Joey Gutierrez to assure him that he was not as threatening as he appeared. Mackenzie also put a lot of effort into repairing his friendship with Lance Hunter after the pair fell out due to differing loyalties. When Bobbi Morse and Hunter had to resign from S.H.I.E.L.D. and their friends gave them a spy goodbye, Mackenzie proved to be emotional, crying while silently toasting to his friends.
The loss of his daughter Hope Mackenzie only a few days after she was born deeply affected Mackenzie, who is very private on that matter. He only mentioned it to Elena Rodriguez after visiting his ex-girlfriend Nicole on Hope's birthday. Mackenzie missed his daughter so much that he chose to stay in the Framework in order to live beside her, even if this life was purely virtual, only leaving once she was erased from the simulation. In the simulated reality, Mackenzie deeply loved his daughter and was very protective of her.
Mackenzie is deeply religious and often calls upon his Christian beliefs when put in harsh situations. This affected many of his decisions while working as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Mackenzie notably refused to sacrifice anyone, no matter how bad, to achieve his missions: as such, he chose to spare Zev's life instead of leaving him to die in space, even though Zev could report them to Grill and cause their death. He was also uncomfortable with the death of Ruby Hale, who had been killed by Rodriguez, allegedly to save the world, claiming that they were not supposed to act that way. Mackenzie could also get annoyed when he heard someone like Kasius believing to be a God, constantly reminding that there was only one God according to him. However, Mackenzie's culture and philosophy were not limited to the Bible, as he was able to quote Aristotle to Johnson to comfort her.
Powers and Abilities

Kree City Sentry
- Superhuman Strength: To be added
- Superhuman Durability: To be added
- Inhuman Detection: Mackenzie was able to differentiate between humans and Inhumans, even those who had not undergone Terrigenesis such as Skye and Raina.
- Demonic Transformation: Possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance, Alphonso Mackenzie was briefly able to transform into a skeletal humanoid with a flaming skull and glowing orange eyes, looking very similar to Johnny Blaze and Robbie Reyes.
- Superhuman Strength: Mackenzie showed feats of superhuman strength during this period, notably being able to throw his foes away from him with as little as one strike, sending men flying several feet with his attacks and lifting a man above his head with one hand. He exerted little to no effort when stopping an agent from grabbing him by knocking the man's hands away before pushing him though the air with a punch, all while not even looking at the man.
- Superhuman Durability: Mackenzie withstood being shot in the torso while riding on his motorcycle with little effect.
- Mediumship: Mackenzie, while possessed by the Spirit, was able to perceive and speak to Robbie Reyes while he was trapped in within an invisible layer of reality and was even able to touch him and merge with him again.
- Power Imbuing: Through mere touch, Mackenzie was able to transfer the Spirit of Vengeance back into Robbie Reyes allowing Reyes to also be able to transform into Ghost Rider.
- Expert Engineer: Mackenzie was the chief engineer of one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s aircraft carriers, the Iliad. However, as part of his cover to infiltrate Phil Coulson's faction of S.H.I.E.L.D., Mackenzie posed as a simple mechanic, spending time checking on the gears of the Bus or Quinjet, even on his spare time. When Leo Fitz was unable to create a cloaking device for the Bus, Mackenzie was tasked to recreate the technology after a Quinjet was stolen. He had a desire to work on Lola to get close to Coulson and gain his trust, reconstructing a 1962 limousine in hopes of impressing him enough to get the chance, and later creating an RC model of Lola as a gift for Coulson. Mackenzie was also left in charge of repairing the hangar doors after Daisy Johnson destroyed them with her powers.
- Expert Marksman: Although Mackenzie hates using firearms, he is more than skilled with them if the situation demands it. As the rest of field agents were busy chasing fugitive Grant Ward, Mackenzie had to accompany Skye to stop Phil Coulson, who went alone to pursue serial killer and former Project T.A.H.I.T.I. patient Sebastian Derik. Upon arriving, Mackenzie had to threaten Coulson with his handgun, though Coulson released Derik before having to do so. Once he became Daisy Johnson's partner, Mackenzie carried a handgun as his sidearm, resorting to using it against Lash, hitting him many times but to no avail. He is able to expertly aim his custom-built Shotgun-Axe, a weapon which, as Flint pointed out, he should have trouble aiming due to the axe head causing uneven weight distribution. He was also accurate enough to kill Watchdog Alpha with birdshot ammunition from an improvised Shotgun-Axe.
- Expert Combatant: Mackenzie is a skilled fighter, often sparring with Bobbi Morse to improve his fighting skills. Mackenzie's extraordinarily strong, able to drag a dense Kree corpse with one hand (when it took three people to drag another) as well as smash through a concrete pillar by slamming a Chronicom Hunter's head into it. He often uses this attribute as a weapon such as when he put Lance Hunter in a sleeper hold. During his battles with Gordon and Lash, Mackenzie resorted to weapons against his foes. He knocked out Virgil with a single punch and even defeated the Odium-empowered Kasius in a duel with help from Jemma Simmons. Mackenzie was also able to withstand a fight against the mighty Pachakutiq, even striking him strongly enough to briefly disrupt the balance between the incorporeal entity and the body it was using.
- Expert Tactician: Mackenzie has enough knowledge of tactics and leadership to be designated as the acting Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Phil Coulson in the midst of Coulson's independent ventures against Grant Ward. Mackenzie displayed these abilities by forming a plan and leading S.H.I.E.L.D. in infiltrating a HYDRA Castle to rescue captive S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel and Inhumans and also to stop an alien portal from releasing Hive.
- "You'd think three years' high school Spanish..."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
- Bilingualism: Mackenzie speaks fluent English and Spanish. Initially, he had rudimentary high school level Spanish but struggled to communicate with Elena Rodriguez upon first meeting her. Over time, Mackenzie improved his Spanish skills, telling Rodriguez that it was a new work requirement, and had improved enough to hold a conversation with her. During his life in the Framework, he was implanted with memories of learning Spanish fluently as it was a mandatory school subject for his daughter, and retained his Spanish fluency upon escaping the simulation.

- "I need a bigger gun, I guess. Or my axe. Or maybe a shotgun-axe combination of some sort."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
- Shotgun-Axe: After being attacked by Lash during an attack on a hospital, Mackenzie mentioned creating a weapon that combined the features of a shotgun and axe. Later, while defending his brother from the Watchdogs, Mackenzie created a makeshift version of this weapon by taping a meat cleaver onto a Remington 870. Upon returning to the Playground, Mackenzie began work on a properly engineered, fully-functional version from a Mossberg 500 Cruiser, eventually completing it in time to battle Hive's Primitives on Zephyr One. He then used it on many later missions as his primary weapon of choice, battling the Watchdogs, Aida, and the Chinatown Crew.
- Smith & Wesson M&P Compact: Mackenzie used the compact version of the Smith & Wesson M&P pistol when he accompanied Skye to stop Phil Coulson, who was acting erratically due to having unlocked the memories from Project T.A.H.I.T.I. Mackenzie threatened to shoot Coulson if he did not release Sebastian Derik, though he did, having realized the true meaning of the Words of Creation.
- Smith & Wesson M&P: Mackenzie replaced his compact version for the standard Smith & Wesson M&P when he became a full-fledged field agent and Daisy Johnson's partner. He used during his earlier missions when S.H.I.E.L.D. came into conflict against the Advanced Threat Containment Unit, and to try to harm Lash when they first came across him in Cincinnati. He kept his sidearm despite carrying his signature Shotgun-Axe, using it while exploring the Roxxon Power Plant with his heavy weapon on his back. Mackenzie also used the handgun to try to shoot at Glenn Talbot when they tried to stop him in front of his own house.
- Remington 870: Mackenzie was handed both a Remington 870 shotgun and an M4A1 carbine taken from deceased HYDRA operatives that were attempting to take over the Iliad, in order to help Bobbi Morse and Isabelle Hartley with their mission at the ship. Mackenzie chose to stay within the Iliad and retake it when HYDRA revealed its presence within S.H.I.E.L.D.. He used the shotgun to defend their position and take back the ship. Later, during an attack by the Watchdogs, Mackenzie retrieved his father's shotgun to defend his his brother. While using it to eliminate the Watchdog attackers, Mackenzie taped a meat cleaver to the barrel, creating the first incarnation of his Shotgun-Axe. Mackenzie also took a Remington 870 belonging to his father when the Watchdogs attacked him and his brother Ruben, loading it with the bird shots that his father kept. Mackenzie used the shotgun to defend himself from the Watchdogs and even attached a cleaver to its end to transform it into an improvised version of the "shotgun-axe" he had thought about many times before. Mackenzie also took the shotgun that belonged to Briggs during the Blackout Attack in Miami, taking it to the place where the EMP device was guarded, but did not use it in the ensuing confrontation against the Watchdog guards.
- Heckler & Koch MP5A3: Mackenzie was given one of these weapons by Lance Hunter and Joey Gutierrez, who took many of them from the HYDRA operatives they had already knocked unconscious in order to barricade themselves inside the portal chamber of the HYDRA Castle. Mackenzie stayed in the chamber with Daisy Johnson to protect the portal, ordering her to shoot anything that came from the portal if it was not Phil Coulson or Leo Fitz.
- M4A1: Mackenzie was handed both a Remington 870 shotgun and an M4A1 carbine taken from deceased HYDRA operatives that were attempting to take over the Iliad, in order to help Bobbi Morse and Isabelle Hartley with their mission at the ship. He used the assault rifle against the operatives that he encountered inside the ship while looking for Commander Robert Gonzales.
Within the Framework, Mackenzie was given one of these rifles from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s arsenal in order to accompany a group of agents to rescue Daisy Johnson and Melinda May. Recognizing May as the agent that breached into her house and took his daughter into custody, he held her at gunpoint, until he was convinced that she had switched allegiances.
- SIG SG 552: Mackenzie took one of the rifles from the mercenaries hired to kill Jeffrey Mace at Freyer National Park, and ambushed them right after destroying the device that was jamming their communications.
- M67 Grenade: Mackenzie took one of these grenades from the arsenal of the mercenaries that were trying to kill Jeffrey Mace at Freyer National Park, and used it to destroy the device that was jamming their communications.
- Airtronic RPG-7: Mackenzie used this rocket launcher in order to open a breach into Anton Ivanov's secret base. He fired it at a wall from the back of a Quinjet and used the hole to enter into the compound.
- Firefighter's Axe: An emergency handaxe that Mackenzie took at the Iliad when it was attacked by a group of Inhumans led by Jiaying. Mackenzie used it to attack Gordon and protect a case with Terrigen Crystals, having to use it to cut Phil Coulson's hand when he prevented one of the crystals from breaking and his hand began to turn into stone.
- Kree Battle Axe: Mackenzie used the battle axe to kill one of his Kree torturers on the Lighthouse.
- Metal Rods: Having lent his Shotgun-Axe to Phil Coulson Mackenzie used Metal Rods to fight against the Remorath who were invading the Lighthouse. He later gave one rod to Melinda May so she could fight as well.
- Splinter Bomb: Mackenzie used a splinter bomb to destroy the body of a Kree Reaper to stop its DNA from being harvested by Holden Radcliffe.
- Sarge's Sword: Mackenzie used this sword to kill Sarge once and for all.
- Bulletproof Vest: Mackenzie uses a bulletproof vest for protection during his missions as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- Pick-Lock Device: Mackenzie used a Pick-Lock Device to free Eli Morrow from his cell during a prison riot.
- Framework Headset: To be added
- Metrics: In order to blend in among humans on the Lighthouse, Mackenzie had a Metric implanted in his wrist, before it was removed by Yo-Yo Rodriguez during the revolution against Kasius and the Kree Watch.
- Harley Davidson Motorcycle: To be added
- Bus: To be added
- Lola: To be added
- Zephyr One: To be added
- Quinjet: To be added
- S.H.I.E.L.D. SUV: To be added
- Mackenzie Residence: Mackenzie grew up in this house with his brother Ruben. Due to his involvement in S.H.I.E.L.D., he eventually was unable to spend much time in his former residence, although he would sometimes visit when off duty. In an alternate timeline, while Mackenzie was stuck in the 1980s, he took residence in his childhood home, as he fell into a deep depression due to his parent's deaths.
- Iliad: Mackenzie was stationed on the S.H.I.E.L.D. aircraft known as the Iliad by the time the HYDRA Uprising erupted. He helped secure the ship by taking it back from HYDRA's hands, and later worked on the ship under Robert Gonzales' orders.
- Playground: As a double agent secretly working for Gonzales' faction of S.H.I.E.L.D., Mackenzie was sent to work to the Playground, where Phil Coulson was rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. as well. Mackenzie quickly became the lead engineer in the base, putting his engineering skills to good use during his various assignments, and making friends with Coulson's agents, especially Leo Fitz. Once the two factions were merged, Mackenzie, although contemplating leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. for a while, kept living in the Playground, occasionally sharing a room with Yo-Yo Rodriguez.
- Lighthouse: Along with the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, Mackenzie settled in the Lighthouse after coming back from the future. Once he became the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he had his own office prepared near the command center of the base. Mackenzie was, however, forced to abandon the base after it was invaded by the Chronicoms.
- Triskelion: To be added
- Ivanov Oil Platform: Having been abducted by Aida and her allies, Mackenzie was forcibly connected to the Framework, with the hardware being located in an oil platform owned by Anton Ivanov. When the platform was destroyed by Ivanov while Mackenzie was still trapped in the Framework, he nearly drowned, but was saved by Leo Fitz and Aida, who took him to the Zephyr One.
In the Framework
- Playground: In an attempt to make up for his involvement in Daisy Johnson's capture by HYDRA, Mackenzie joined the S.H.I.E.L.D. resistance after reaching their base. There, he was able to help many fugitives hiding from HYDRA, especially after his real-world teammates left the Framework. By the time the destruction of the Framework had been enacted by Aida, Mackenzie ordered the evacuation of the Playground, noticing that parts of it seemed to simply vanish.
- In the comics, Alphonso "Al" MacKenzie is a veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and former CIA liaison to S.H.I.E.L.D.
- Mackenzie has been controlled by a power-bestowing force on two different occasions, the first one being in ...Ye Who Enter Here and the second one in Deals With Our Devils.
- Mackenzie likes singing in the shower. He also admits to being afraid of the dark and appears to be afraid of ghosts, but refuses to admit it. He is also afraid of needles. According to himself, his three greatest fears are drowning, heights and hostile robots.
- Mackenzie does not like quinoa, although he pretended the contrary to his girlfriend for a year.
- Mackenzie has a special provision in his life insurance for death by a robot.
- Mackenzie is a fan of science fiction, frequently mentioning franchises such as Alien and Terminator.
