Alphona is the Coach of the Atlas Academy lacrosse team.

Biography[]

"Inspirational speech time, gentlemen. You guys have worked your ass off every day to get here. You got college recruiters around the country after you. Whatever's come between you guys, it can't be worth risking all that."

Alphona intervened in a brawl between Chase Stein and his Lacrosse teammates Lucas and Brandon, over Brandon's attempted sexual aggression on Karolina Dean. Deeply angered, the coach brought the three kids in his office.

Later on that day, Alphona made a speech in front of the team, reminding them about the importance of their sport careers, and urging them to put aside their difficulties to not risk them. Stein decided to leave the Lacrosse team anyway.[1]

At Atlas Academy’ Open House, Alphona was threatened by Victor Stein to allow Chase back on the lacrosse team.[2]

Personality[]

Coach Alphona is a positive influence on his players and wants the best for them, as during his speech he reminded them that college recruiters would be watching their performance and stated that Chase Stein's adversarial relationship with Lucas and Brandon was not worth jeopardizing his their academic careers.

Alphona had a particular impact on Stein, who would often quote him, with such lines including "There's no "I" in team,"[3] "Pain heals, but glory lasts forever,"[4] "The strongest defense is a swift and decisive offense,"[5] and "Don't let yesterday's loss take up too much of today" (although he quoted John Wooden).[6]

  • Tactician: According to Chase Stein, Coach Alphona was responsible for Atlas Academy winning the Division I lacrosse championship three years in a row, and he taught his players breathing techniques.[7] He also made his players take ballroom dancing to strengthen the lower body and increase flexibility.[8]
