"Halloween's a magical holiday. All about family, friends, and the thrill of getting to be someone else for a day."
"Wrong! Halloween's about candy. And scaring people, but mostly candy."

Synopsis

Plot

This section needs a rewrite

In a 1990s/2000s setting, Halloween comes to Westview. The Maximoff family prepares their costumes for the night. Vision leaves on his own accord to attend neighborhood watch, leaving "Pietro" and Wanda Maximoff to take care of Billy and Tommy.

Meanwhile at the S.W.O.R.D. Response Base, Monica Rambeau is furious at Tyler Hayward’s decision to attempt an execution on Wanda. Darcy Lewis, on the other hand, teases Hayward for nearly getting killed by his own men, leading him to question who she truly works for until Rambeau vouches for her. Jimmy Woo intervenes and urges Hayward to avoid diminishing his colleagues when he's about to start a war he can't win. Hawyward is convinced that taking out Wanda is their only option but Rambeau fears it might lead to unintended consequences inside and out of the Hex, arguing they can't take on Wanda nor continue antagonizing her, and should instead try to convince her to remove the Hex. This convinces Hayward that she's incapable of being objective, considering her history with Carol Danvers, and orders Rambeau, Woo and Lewis removed from the base. Before they can board their transport, Rambeau and Woo overpower their captors, and the three sneak back into the base undetected.

Pietro and the boys’ use Pietro's superpowers to steal candy from everyone and smash the pumpkin decorations without being seen by seemingly anyone but Wanda. When Wanda notices "Herb" out on neighborhood watch, he informs her that he has not seen Vision, despite his word. Meanwhile, Vision wanders into what appears to be another part of Westview, where he notices a resident repeatedly hanging a Halloween decoration, with a tear running down her cheek.

A commercial during the WandaVision program advertises Yo-Magic yogurt.

Wanda lectures Pietro and her sons about their candy antics, and makes them return the candy they had stolen from their neighbors. Soon, Tommy discovers that he shares Pietro’s super-speed power, delighting both Pietro and Wanda. Back at the S.W.O.R.D. base, a cloaked Rambeau, Woo, and Lewis re-infiltrate the base and breach Hayward’s devices, which are tracking traces of vibranium decay in Westview -- the three immediately identify Vision as the decay.

Vision walks through a part of Westview filled with people, although eerily idle. Growing suspicious of the situation, he flies into the air and looks around the town, before finding a lone car with its headlights on -- the driver inside is Agnes. When Vision unlocks Agnes’ "true personality," she recognizes the synthezoid as an Avenger, but Vision does not know what an “Avenger” is. He is also informed that he is actually deceased, much to his confusion. As she claims "all is lost", Agnes begins laughing maniacally, but Vision restores her "sitcom personality," and she drives away.

Monica informs Woo and Lewis that her contact will be arriving with her method of re-entering the Hex in the next hour. Lewis attempts to dissuade her, revealing that her exposure in the anomaly has rewritten her cell DNA, but Rambeau remains determined to help Wanda. Woo accompanies Rambeau, while Lewis stays to breach Hayward’s remaining firewalls. She soon finds a file labeled Cataract and emails it to Woo.

Pietro reveals to Wanda that he knows she has taken over Westview with her telepathic abilities. Her brother encourages his sister to open up, the latter revealing that before moving in, she felt alone and hopeless. Turning around, Wanda is horrified to find Pietro as a corpse for a second, before reverting back to normal.

After his encounter with Agnes on the Westview outskirts, Vision becomes even more determined to cross the perimeter into the real world. As the synthezoid approaches the edge of town, Hayward orders S.W.O.R.D. troops to the perimeter; Darcy joins them as well, only to watch in horror as Vision crosses the barrier and begins to decay. She attempts to assist the synthezoid, but Hayward has her handcuffed to a car. Billy, exercising his powers for the first time, overhears Vision’s screams and informs Wanda about them. Upon further prompting from Wanda, Billy also reveals that Vision is surrounded by soldiers, and that he may be dying. Wanda freezes the Westview population and expands the Hex’s perimeter, engulfing the entire S.W.O.R.D. base and personnel, transforming it into a carnival as well as reclaiming Vision. Hayward and his crew flee from the base, leaving Darcy behind, who is engulfed by the perimeter. Woo and Rambeau, having already left to prepare to enter the Hex, escape the expansion, while Hayward reaches out for assistance on a radio channel.

Trivia

  • This episode pays homage to American sitcoms of the 1990s and 2000s, most notably Malcolm in the Middle. Additionally, one of the movies playing at the town cinema is The Incredibles, which released in 2004. Tommy Maximoff also wears an anachronistic Minecraft beanie that was officially released in 2011.
  • "Pietro Maximoff" is credited as "himself" in the opening.
  • "Pietro" utters the word "kick-ass", which Wanda repeats with curiosity. Kick-Ass is also the name of a movie that both actors for Pietro, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Evan Peters, starred in.
  • Wanda, Vision, "Pietro", Billy and Tommy all dress up in their original comic outfits for Halloween.
    • Ironically, when Elizabeth Olsen was cast as Wanda for Avengers: Age of Ultron, director Joss Whedon told her: "When you go home and Google her, just know you will never ever have to wear what she wears in the comics." [1]
      • This contradiction is acknowledged by Olsen herself when talking about the filming of the episode in The Making of WandaVision.
    • Pietro's hairstyle for his Halloween costume is modeled on that of Wolverine from X-Men, in an intentional nod to both the comics character and Fox's X-Men film franchise that Evan Peters previously appeared in.[2]
  • "Pietro" refers to Tommy and Billy as "demon spawn"; in the comics, both Billy and Tommy had been spawned by the demon Mephisto.
  • The name "Ray Johnson" can be spotted on S.W.O.R.D.'s computer files. In the comics, this is the alias of John Wraith, a member of the mutant group Team X.
  • Agnes' license plate, DA1B2C, is the hex code for Alizarin crimson, a shade of red.
  • The Halloween setting of the episode is an homage to Vision and the Scarlet Witch Vol.1 Issue 1 and Vol.2 Issue 5, both featuring an Halloween setting.
