"When Mom died, I stopped believing everything she ever taught me. I was so angry. Part of me hoped that the Road wasn't real, so I could stay angry."
―Alice Wu-Gulliver to Agatha Harkness' Coven[src]

Alice Wu-Gulliver was a witch who specialized in protection. The daughter of Lorna Wu from the band Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore, Alice was destined to be burned in adulthood at the hands of her family's curse but the curse was delayed by her mother, who used her variation of the Ballad of the Witches' Road as a protection spell. When her mother died, Wu-Gulliver became disillusioned with magic and her mother's version of the Ballad.

Following years of bad luck and switching between jobs due to the curse, in 2026, she met Billy Maximoff and Agatha Harkness, who wanted to recruit her into a coven to walk the Witches' Road, which she accepted. During the Protection Witch Trial, Wu-Gulliver came to terms with her mother's death and defeated her curse but was later killed by Harkness while trying to protect her.

Biography[]

This is an in-depth biography of Alice Wu-Gulliver. For an abridged overview, see Marvel Database's article on the same character.

Early Life[]

Losing Her Mother[]

Wu-Gulliver was born to Lorna Wu, leader of the band Lorna Wu and the Coral Shore, and inherited the same curse that had affected the women in her family for generations. To protect her daughter, Lorna taught her magic, insisted upon her getting a protection tattoo as a young teenager, and wrote a variant of the Ballad of the Witches' Road as a protection spell. This song became a global hit, ensuring it would be played by someone somewhere at all times and preventing Wu-Gulliver from being taken by the curse. Lorna, however, was not able to save herself; while on tour, she was killed by the curse in what appeared to be a hotel fire. Because she was said to have died "on the road", it was falsely rumored that she had died on the Witches' Road. To cope with her mother's death, Wu-Gulliver convinced herself that Lorna's belief in magic was crazy, distancing herself from her mother's world and the song she wrote to protect her.[3][4]

Police Officer[]

By 2023, Wu-Gulliver was working as a police officer for the Eastview Police Department, through which she gained many skills and connections that she would continue to utilize after leaving the job. During this time, Wu-Gulliver was the first responder at a car accident after getting flagged down by Jeff Kaplan. Wu-Gulliver made her way to the car and asked Rebecca Kaplan if her son was breathing, and upon getting confirmation that he was, warned her not to move him as an ambulance was en route.[5] Wu-Gulliver then asked Kaplan what his son's name was, but was unable to hear what he was saying.[6]

Job Failures[]

She would proceed to work many other jobs but lose them due to the effects of the curse making her destined to be unlucky.[1][3][4]

The Witches' Road[]

Joining Agatha Harkness' Coven[]

While working as Westview Shopping Mall Security, Wu-Gulliver noticed a teenager seemingly shoplifting and tackled him to the ground. Agatha Harkness lied to Wu-Gulliver's supervisor that the teen was her nephew and was innocent, resulting in Wu-Gulliver being fired for use of excessive force. As she left, Harkness and the teen approached her and revealed their awareness of her real identity, including that she was the daughter of Lorna Wu, and asked her to join Agatha Harkness' Coven to walk the Witches' Road, suggesting she might learn the truth of what happened to her mother. Despite knowing the Witches' Road had nothing to do with Lorna's death, Wu-Gulliver recalled that her mother had indicated the Road could save her from the curse, and joined Harkness, Lilia Calderu, Jennifer Kale, and Sharon Davis in performing the "Ballad of the Witches' Road" to open the gate, barely escaping from the Salem Seven.[1]

Potions Witch Trial[]

Shortly after arriving on the road, the coven and the Teen reached the Potions Witch Trial, where they were directed by a clue to consume poisoned wine. Jennifer Kale was able to identify the poison based on their symptoms and directed them to find the necessary ingredients for the cure; while searching for ingredients with the teen, whom she had earlier bonded with by discussing their traumas as young teenagers, Wu-Gulliver hallucinated a version of her mother shortly before her death. She was comforted by the teen before returning to the other witches and making the cure as water began to flood around and in the trial. Though most of the coven were able to drink it in time, they were unable to save Sharon Davis, who died as they escaped the trial through the oven.[3]

Protection Witch Trial[]

Fiery Alice Wu-Gulliver

Wu-Gulliver defeats the curse

When Wu-Gulliver and Teen buried Sharon Davis, the coven agreed to attempt a summoning spell to find a replacement Green Witch and wound up summoning Rio Vidal, who identified herself as not just a Green Witch, but the Green Witch. With Vidal tagging along as an ally, the coven reached the Protection Witch Trial, which Wu-Gulliver was immediately put off by. Due to Agatha Harkness's trickery, the witches overheard Vidal stating that Harkness would kill them all and Vidal would collect their corpses, but their confrontation was interrupted by the teen starting a record of Lorna Wu's version of the "Ballad of the Witches' Road" that played backwards, transferring the Wu Family Curse onto the other members of the coven. Wu-Gulliver recognized its effects after it struck Calderu and Kale, who she saved with protective circles, and she began apologizing for her involvement when the curse threw the teen through a glass pane, though he seemed largely unharmed. Realizing that Lorna's version of the ballad was a protection spell and that the only way to defeat a curse was to face it, Harkness encouraged Wu-Gulliver and the rest of the coven to perform the song. As the performance came to its conclusion, Wu-Gulliver realized that she could now see the embodiment of the curse and was able to kill it with the song when it attacked her again, breaking the curse on not only herself but the rest of the coven and the teen. However, as the exit opened through Wu-Gulliver's piano, the teen collapsed due to a shard of glass that had pierced his stomach, causing him to bleed out. Jennifer Kale was only just able to save him after they returned to the road, and Wu-Gulliver, Kale, Lilia Calderu, and Vidal bonded while Harkness watched over him, until Vidal and Harkness split from the group after Vidal alluded to their shared past.[4]

The Spirit Witch Trial[]

Death of Alice Wu-Gulliver

Wu-Gulliver is killed by Harkness

The coven rested on the road, but were awakened by Lilia Calderu seeing the Salem Seven arriving on the road through a gate left open by the summoning spell that brought Rio Vidal. They attempted to escape with makeshift brooms on the Teen's suggestion, but the road crashed them back to the ground in front of the next trial, which they escaped into as the Salem Seven attacked. Vidal recognized the trial, tied to death through a blood moon and a Ouija board, as the Spirit Witch Trial, as the witch closest tied to death. Despite Harkness's hesitation, the coven utilized the Ouija board to commune with the present spirit, which stated its intention to punish Harkness before possessing her when she took her hands off the board. The ghost revealed itself as Evanora Harkness, Harkness's mother, who insisted that the coven must leave Harkness behind with her. Though Jennifer Kale was willing to go along with the ghost's demands, Wu-Gulliver fought back when Evanora possessed her daughter, blasting her out of Harkness's body with her magic; however, this attempt to save Harkness allowed her to activate her own powers, draining Wu-Gulliver's powers for herself and killing Wu-Gulliver.[2]

Legacy[]

Meeting Death[]

Death collects Alice

Wu Gulliver is collected by Death

Wu-Gulliver's soul was taken out of her body in the clothing she had worn on the Witches' Road. She then saw Death, who turned out to be Rio Vidal, appear to her, telling her that she died and that she was to be taken to the afterlife. Wu-Gulliver, however, was filled with regret, asking if she really received so little time. She was saddened especially due to finally breaking her curse and not being able to do anything with her life afterwards. Albeit hesitant, Wu-Gulliver decided to go with Death through a mysterious door to the afterlife.[7]

Personality[]

Though initially reserved and rather closed minded, Alice is presented as an extremely selfless, caring witch with a compassion to protecting the people around her. After her mother’s death, she became angry and stopped believing in everything that she taught her. Admitting herself that she hoped the Witches’ Road didn’t exist so that she could remain angry rather than face the truth. Alice has been shown to be able to build close bonds with the people in her life as shown through her relationship with her coven, whom she spent her time on the road trying to protect against the road’s trials.

Alice had quite a close connection with Billy, due to their shared traumas and experiences at such young ages. Ultimately, Alice was a kind woman who gave her life to allow the rest of Agatha’s coven to continue on the Witches’ Road.
