"They eat batteries, not people."

An Abilisk swallows Drax the Destroyer

An Abilisk appeared on the planet Sovereign, drawn by their Anulax Batteries and began feeding on them. The Sovereign, believing that it was beneath them to fight the Abilisk themselves, hired the Guardians of the Galaxy to kill it for them. The Guardians set up a trap for the Abilisk. When the Abilisk returned to feed on the batteries, the Guardians attacked it, with a large battle taking place. It saw Drax running towards it and simply swallowed him. With two other Guardians drawing its attention, the Abilisk looked up, snapping at them. To its surprise, however, Gamora drew her sword and drove it into its injury, cutting the creature open. The Abilisk collapsed, dying soon after.[1]

Characteristic Traits[]

Abilisks are large, tentacled creatures with several sets of teeth and protruding eyes. Abilisks have incredibly thick skin, preventing blasters and sharp objects from doing them harm. This does not make them immune to any damage, however, as the Abilisk the Guardians of the Galaxy battled on the Sovereign planet had a large scar on its neck. How this happened is unknown, but the scar allowed Gamora to kill the Abilisk with her sword, as the scar tissue was not as thick as the Abilisk's regular skin.

Whilst Abilisks can be dangerous, they are not interested in actively hunting other beings as prey. They primarily feast on batteries and only react violently if provoked or out of fear. If one remains calm and approaches them with kindness, they can be pacified.

Powers[]

  • Superhuman Strength: An Abilisk's tentacles possessed the strength to lift, drag, throw, and crush objects the size of Drax effortlessly.
"The beast's hide is too thick to be pierced from the outside."
Drax the Destroyer[src]
  • Superhuman Durability: One Abilisk's skin was durable enough to withstand multiple blasts from Rocket's many guns and Star-Lord's Quad Blasters. It was so strong that Drax the Destroyer was not able to pierce the skin after many slices of his knives. It was only killed when Gamora attacked a pre-existing cut on its neck using the Godslayer.
  • Superhuman Stamina: An Abilisk fought the Guardians of the Galaxy for a great period of time without showing any signs of fatigue.
  • Flight: An Abilisk can use its tentacles as propulsion[3] to flight.
"We've been hired to stop an interdimensional beast from feeding on those batteries, and I'm gonna stop it with a sword?"
Gamora to Star-Lord[src]

Trivia[]

  • While Abilisks are original creatures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the comics the Guardians of the Galaxy's first mission was to prevent a similar inter-dimensional beast to breach into the universe through a fissure in the space-time continuum.
  • James Gunn described Abilisks as similar to "a pink-naked mouse" or "the inside of an old man's ear".[4]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The visual effects and style of an Abilisk's Matter Waves were inspired by Gunn's collaboration with Suda51 on the video game Lollipop Chainsaw.[4]
