"You want the audience to trust you, believe you? Be camera friendly."
Dorothy Walker to Jessica Jones

AKA Camera Friendly is the eighth episode of the third season of the television series Jessica Jones.

Synopsis[]

When Sallinger posts a video teasing his next crime, Jessica responds with her own media play. Jeri demands that Malcolm identify the masked woman.

Plot[]

Jessica Jones gets a call from Eddy Costa, who informs her that the Wappinger Falls medical examiner found hair on Nathan Silva’s body. However, Costa can't get the evidence as they won't give him the body because the precinct is in chaos. Costa's captain wants her for questioning. He is pulling cops off of other cases to find her. The connection between Trish Walker and the case is that Costa is losing his credibility for his connection to Jones, which he needs to gain jurisdiction over the body. Costa wants Jones to convince the vigilant to come in and answer some questions. Or to better yet, stop altogether. Jones restates her claim of not knowing the masked vigilante, but says she will look into it.

After Walker fails to answer her calls, Jones stops by the studio to talk to her in person. Jones shows Dorothy Walker the photo from the Bulletin of Walker in her disguise. Dorothy is more concerned with Walker's wardrobe, suggesting cats as a theme for her new costume. Dorothy is upset that Walker went down this path without her. Dorothy believes that both she and Jones could use her support. Jones then gets a video message from Gregory Sallinger from a cafe, where he stated that by 7:00 pm, a life would end because of Jones and everyone would see that she is a fraud. While Sallinger is supposed to be under police surveillance, he must’ve slipped them. The camera from the video is focused on a table, where two men and a woman sit. Given that all his past victims were male, Walker concludes that his next victim must be one of the two men at the table. The video then seems to erase itself. Dorothy explains that it is an InstaYap video, which only allowed two viewings. She tries to prevent Walker from helping Jones stop Sallinger, but that doesn't work. Walker returns to her show and brings Dorothy on stage of Style by Trish, using her mother as a stand-in so that she can accompany Jones.

Jones plans to go to Sallinger's apartment to confirm he is gone while Walker heads over to Hudson Street Market, to see if she can find out where Sallinger shot the video. Jones tells Walker to go as herself as the front-page photo of Walker causes a shitstorm and NYPD wanting her for questioning.

Costa and his husband Russell Costa video chat with with their adopted child. However, Costa keeps getting calls from Jones, which upsets Russell. Jones sends a message that Sallinger is going to kill someone. Costa stops the meeting and after reassuring Russell that it wouldn't always be like this, calls Jones and tells her to stay away from Sallinger. Jones informs Costa of the video Sallinger sent. Costa doubts Sallinger could do anything of the sort as he had just checked with surveillance 20 minutes ago. Costa asks for the video, but it has been erased. With or without Costa, Jones is heads over to Sallinger's. However, with Costa makes them both look better.

Malcolm Ducasse is calls into Jeri Hogarth’s office, where she and Zaya Okonjo plays the footage of his encounter with the masked vigilante. However, it seems as if the footage had been edited and instead of an altercation between Ducasse and Walker, followed by the two peacefully parting ways, Ducasse enters his office and walks right back out. They believe this woman to be partnered with Jones. Hogarth thinks she is being targeted by the two, and so she wants the second vigilante unmasked, no matter the cost.

Walker arrives at the cafe in which Sallinger’s video is taken. She asks the employee who she saw in the video about the two men and dark-haired woman that had sat at the table that morning. She claims that she is trying to get one of the guys’ number. The waiter assumes she is joking as he recognizes her as Patsy. Walker insists this isn't a joke and that she needs the guys name. However, they paid in cash, leaving no trail to follow.

Costa pulls up as Jones reaches Sallinger's apartment. He warns her to walk away as Sallinger hasn't gone anywhere, but Jones doubts that. Jones and Costa knock on the door to find out that Sallinger is gone. He hires Joby, who informs them that he answered a job posting. $200 to sit and watch TV on Sallinger's couch. Jones reveals to Costa that this is the result of her rubbing in his face that she finds out about Nathan Silva. Jones tells Costa to leave while she stays behind to force Sallinger to communicate with her. Jones then sends Sallinger a video of her in his apartment, mocking him and destroying his trophies and degrees.

Hogarth and Okonjo - JJ308

Okonjo demands to know why she should’ve protected Ducasse when he'd been lying to her. Okonjo admits to editing the footage. But if Hogarth finds out, they’d both be terminated. Ducasse defends the vigilante, claiming that she isn't the villain that she is being made out to be. Ducasse knows the vigilante's identity, but won't reveal it. Okonjo's dad is in the CIA and he always kept secrets. She knows the feeling all too well. Okonjo worries that Ducasse will disappear into his job. The vigilante is trying to stop a killer, Ducasse explains. Okonjo continues to question just how well Ducasse knows the woman and she wonders if the vigilante's mission is more important than their relationship.

Jones and Walker tell Gillian to pull up a satellite view of Hudson Street Market. Jones gets a response video from Sallinger of him following one of the guys from the cafe. He calls Jones a fraud and claims by 7:00 that night, everyone will know it. Knowing that the video would disappear after playing it a second time, Jones records the video with another phone. While he may have still been in Manhattan, Walker and Jones don't see either of the men from Hudson Market. However, Jones notices the women who is from the first video. He is changing his MO to a proxy for Jones.

Jones calls Dorothy over as she wishes to have an interview. Walker narrows the location from the second video to a couple streets in Tribeca. Jones recalls what Sallinger said to her, that her "hero charade will end where it began." However, that is nowhere near Tribeca. There are also no cobblestone streets near Jones’ childhood home, the Jersey Turnpike or the old IGH building. Before heading out to begin the interview, Dorothy briefly coaches Jones.

Trish Walker Season 3

Jones’ live interview with Thembi Wallace starts. Walker watches on her laptop from the bedroom. Jones insists that she isn't a super hero, even if she had squared off with super powered people like Kilgrave and the female serial murderer last year. And now, she is after Sallinger, regardless of powers. Jones reveals that she only agreed to hold the interview to spread the word of Sallinger hunting a woman. The same killer who chopped up seven victims. Jones shows a screenshot of the woman from the video to warn her. She then shows Sallinger's photo. Wallace accuses Jones of provoking the killer, along with teaming up with the masked vigilante, who is wanted for questioning. Jones replies in typical fashion, causing Dorothy to cut the interview short. She and Jones then return to the bedroom with Walker, where Dorothy assured them that the interview is a success as they would be playing that clip all day long, on every platform. While it scares her, Dorothy admits Jones and Walker are making the city safer. However, Dorothy also wants to monetize it, starting with action figures and video games. She also offers to draw up new costume ideas for Walker.

Costa calls Jones as her interview caused every brunette in the city to pour into the station. His captain is upset and he pulled Costa's BOLO on Sallinger. However, they do get a call about Sallinger, who is seen shouting at his cellphone at the florist in Tribeca.

Jones and Walker hit the streets of Tribeca, showing around the photo of the mystery woman. By night fall, they have no leads. With 7:00 approaching, they grow more and more concerned. Jones notices a GT Agrochemical building. Her family crash into their delivery truck, which began Jones "hero charade." Jones and Walker rush towards the building as this must’ve been where Sallinger is leading them. Meanwhile, Sallinger, put on his ski mask and prepare to make his move.

Jones and Walker enter the building and ask the man at the front desk if he has seen the woman in the photo. He thinks he recognizes her, mentioning the name Mona Lee. Pavel leads them into the garage, where they are attacked by three guards, who Jones and Walker disposed of rather quickly. When the guards recognize them, Jones and Walker decide to let them go. They hear a clattering sound in the distance and follow it to Mona Lee, who reveals that it is indeed her in the photo. They tell Lee that there is a serial killer after her and that they were there to protect her.

In returning to his apartment, Sallinger is questioned by two officers, who demand to know where he had been. He decides not to answer, but rather threaten to hold a press conference on police harassment. Sallinger enters his apartment to find it destroyed. He opens the top to his ant farm and grabs a handful of dirt and worms.

Jessica Jones New interview

Back at the GT Agrochemical building, Costa has arrived. He believes that Sallinger is messing with Jones as he is never at GT Agrochemical. Fortunately, the Wappinger Falls body is finally in their lab. Costa suddenly questions if Jones has anything outside the job, to which she gives a sarcastic reply. He'd let her know when the arrest warrant came in, but until then, she needs to keep her head down. Just outside the building, paparazzi and news reporters await Jones. She is bombarded with questions. Walker watches from the roof up above as Jones is surrounded. Hoping to take some of the attention away from Jones, Walker jumps down into the crowd. With police approaching, Jones grabs Walker and jumped onto the nearby roof.

This is all captured on footage, as Hogarth watches from her office, on her laptop. Okonjo informs Hogarth that she hasn't been able to get a hold of Sallinger all day. They need a statement. Hogarth gets a call from Sid Franken from the Bulletin, who wants a comment from Sallinger. Hogarth tells Franken that Jones is associating with the masked woman who assaulted her client. No one, powered or otherwise, should be above the law. Hence, Hogarth & Associates are making it their business to stop them. Franken then asks for a comment on Peter Lyonne’s suicide, but Hogarth declines. Lastly, she states that her firm has never and will never support the illegal activity of powered vigilantes. If Jones knows the identity of the masked woman, then Hogarth would be coming from her. Hogarth has officially declared war on supers.

As they pull up outside Jones’ apartment, she thanks Walker for coming down to help her even though she risked getting caught. Jones still can't let go of Sallinger. Everything he does has a purpose. She suspects that he simply wants to draw out the masked vigilante. While he doesn't know who she is, he knows who Jones’ sister is.

Jones enters her apartment and rewatches the video Sallinger sends her. Ducasse knocks on the door. He reveals to Jones that he'd known of Walker's powers for some time now. While he is initially concerned, now that she and Jones were a team, he is less worried. He thinks they’d keep each other in check. Ducasse informs Jones of how Hogarth assigned him to unmask Walker, which he has no intentions of doing. Jones shares with Ducasse how she doesn't think Lee is his actual target. Sallinger says something about Jones’ hero charade ending where it began. Jones gets her powers in the accident that killed her family. Walker is the only family she has left. Jones then came to a realization.

Walker arrives at her mother's home to find the door open and her mother bleeding and tied to a chair. Walker screams for help as she unties her mother only to find that she is dead. The phone rang. It is Jones calling to warn Dorothy. Walker answers and tells Jones that her mother is dead. Jones and Ducasse then head over to Dorothy's, calling the cops as they left. Walker demands that Sallinger pays. Knowing that she intends to go after Sallinger, Jones runs over to his apartment, where she finds two officers wounded just outside the building. Jones climbs up the fire escape and enters the apartment, where she finds Walker attacking a beaten and bloody Sallinger. Walker, with a knife in hand, is moments away from slicing Sallinger's throat. Jones, hoping to stop her from making this mistake, rushes to her.
