Bern 2000: New Year's Day comes, and the distraught Aldrich Killian is still waiting for Tony Stark on the roof of a building in Bern, Switzerland. Meanwhile, Stark chooses to party and sleep with Maya Hansen. Seeing the New Year's celebrations below, Killian is inspired to continue his work without Stark.[4]

Jones Family Car Crash: 14-year-old Jessica Jones, her parents, Brian Jones and Alisa Jones, and her 10-year-old brother, Phillip Jones leave for an Easter vacation to Florida. Her father gets distracted, due to a fight between Jessica and Phillip over a video game, causing their car to crash with a truck that is carrying a container of chemicals. The Jones family die in the crash. Eventually, the corpse of Jessica is retrieved by IGH, they do experiments on her resurrecting her, but giving her powers as a side effect. The horrific experience would affect Jessica's deeply as she decided to investigate the situation 17 years later.[13][14]
Talent agent Dorothy Walker pays IGH for Jones' medical bills while she is comatose, hoping to adopt her as a publicity stunt to promote her daughter Patsy's television show.[13][14]

Alisa Jones wakes in the Industrial Garments & Handling Facility, bewildered. She is greeted by a nurse named Luanne McClure, who tries to calm her down. However, when Jones sees her reflection and sees her face mangled and burned, she panics and becomes angry, breaking out of the room and attacking nurses in the corridor to escape. She finds a girl walking down the corridor and grabs hold of her, but a doctor at the facility, Karl Malus, gets to her and sedates her, informing her that the girl is her daughter, Jessica, so she should not want to hurt her.[15][16]
After awakening from her coma, Jessica Jones overhears Trish "Patsy" Walker talking about the fact Jones' parents and brother are all dead. Right after, Jessica Jones is adopted by the Walker family.[13][17]
Jessica Jones finds out that Dorothy Walker hits her daughter, Trish Walker. She reveals her powers to Trish and promises her that she will protect her from her mother.[17]
In junior year, David Lieberman spends an evening with his classmate Sarah after a party, and they end up kissing. They would become a couple, eventually ending in their marriage.[50][20]
The Rands and Meachums film a commercial for Rand Enterprises. Joy Meachum complains about the dress she has to wear. The two families go to the circus in Madison Square Garden, since the young Danny Rand did not want to film the commercial and his parents had to bribe him. Rand sits between Meachum and his mother, eating popcorn. Rand, inspired, starts wanting to become an acrobat.[56][57]
Gregory Sallinger is on a school field trip when Deputy Ronnie Velasco picks him up in order to tell him about his brother, Donny's passing.[12] Although Gregory hopes this will make his father be less abusive toward him, the death only increases his father's resentment. His father tells him that he wishes he had been the brother to die instead.[58][59]
Jonah takes Catherine and Geoffrey Wilder to his old home, now the underground basement of a mansion. He tells them he is giving them the mansion, so that PRIDE may use the basement for private activity.[64][65]
Rite of Blood: The nine PRIDE parents meet in the Wilder Mansion basement, wearing red gowns and performing the Rite of Blood for the first time. Leslie Dean leads 17-year-old[25] runaway Brooks Watten into a Dematerialization Box, and he is sacrificed, his energy transferred to Jonah to revitalize him. Most of the PRIDE members are shocked at the death, but Dean tells them they all signed up to do this when they agreed to accept Jonah's gifts over the years. Geoffrey Wilder notices a camera that has filmed the event, and Tina Minoru explains that the recording has uploaded to the Wizard server, saying she knew about and willingly went along with the event to protect their children. The group realize what they are now trapped into doing.[64][65]
Tina Minoru returns home to her baby daughter, Nico. She goes to her toddler daughter Amy, only to find Jonah sitting with Amy, having got rid of the babysitter. Jonah thanks her for keeping the recording of the Rite of Blood on her server and standing up to the rest of PRIDE, but Tina says she only did it because of Jonah's threats, not out of loyalty. Tina picks up Amy, scared of her being around Jonah, and Jonah goes to leave, commenting that daughters can become rebellious when they hit their teenage years.[64][71]
Bobby McBurty steals a snowblower. Ronnie Velasco, aware that he did it due to his statement not adding up, decides to let it slide and leaves the case unsolved.[101][12]

Erik Gelden, who has recently received his ability to sense through headaches if people are morally evil, comes home from college, and the first person he sees is his father, whom he had always idolized. He is shocked when he is hit by massive pain in his father's presence, realizing he has done terrible things. As he thinks about why his sister, Brianna Gelden, had stopped coming home, he realizes that in times where his father had locked himself in with Brianna for the night, he had been raping his daughter for years.[108][109]
Erik Gelden confronts his father about raping Brianna, forcing him to admit his actions. His father is arrested, but on that day, Erik and Brianna's mother commits suicide by overdose, and Brianna blames Erik, saying it was not his truth to expose. He is dissuaded from trying to do "good" from there on.[108][109]
After 3 months as a couple, Frank Castle and his girlfriend Maria find out that Maria is pregnant. Maria tells Frank she would understand if he wants to leave, but instead, Frank proposes to her, and she accepts.[110][20]

That day, Sallinger and Silva's high school wrestling team come and build a gazebo in the backyard, and Sallinger helps, ensuring the gazebo is atop Silva's burial place. Silva's father assumes his son did not want to do the work when he does not show up to help. Later, Silva is declared missing by the Wappinger Falls Police Department.[144][12]

He desperately wants her not to leave, wishing to keep working with her, but she assures him they have prepared for this - that he will get a job and stay on his medication, and offers him a box of cassette recordings of their appointments to help him if he needs them. She suggests another therapist, but he angrily gets up and says he does not want another therapist, and that he wants to kill her for dying, which feels like abandonment. She calms him down, and says that he should find someone with a good heart to look up to, to guide his internal compass.[169][170]
Coulson and May's orders are to retrieve the 0-8-4 in Russia. They are discovered by Ivanov's SVR soldiers while cracking a safe. Coulson tries to negotiate with the Russian soldiers, claiming that he has been sent to investigate a biohazard leak, although Ivanov's commander remains highly skeptical of him.[172][173]
May escapes with the 0–8–4, abandoning Coulson, causing him to be captured by the SVR Soldiers. May soon returns, attacking Ivanov and his unit and freeing Coulson. They escape with the 0–8–4.[172][173]
As a result of this, Ivanov's unit are tortured and executed for their failure, although Ivanov manages to escape the same punishment. Ivanov goes on to directly blame Coulson and all of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the incident which killed his unit.[172][173]
Hoping to get a chance to leave her home of Fagan Corners, Penelope Page purchases a losing Vermont Mega-Grab lottery ticket. However, she dies of cancer before scratching it. Her husband frames the ticket and places it on the wall of their Penny's Place restaurant in her memory.[145][174]
After a period of rivalry, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons are paired together in a chemistry lab and strike up a friendship.[167][175]

Leo Fitz invites Jemma Simmons to his dorm room, but Simmons shows up 24 minutes late after getting involved in a conversation with Professor Anne Weaver. Simmons mentions her own bedroom, and Fitz becomes excited at the idea of visiting. Fitz asks Simmons to be a sounding board and if he can bounce ideas off of her, but Simmons is offended. She realizes how cluttered Fitz's thoughts are, so he asks for help uncluttering them. The two work on the project together, and Fitz becomes less awkward around Simmons, though Simmons decides to put him in the "friend zone".[167][181]
Harold Meachum is approached by The Hand organization, days before he is expected to die. They offer him the opportunity to be resurrected after his passing, and he accepts.[182][53]
Karen Page, on a gap year, parties with college students. An emo student calls her over to a side room, where he buys drugs off of her.[190][145]
Another student enters the room and tries to get drugs off of Page without paying full price. When she refuses, he steals it from her and shoves her away. She punches him, and he goes to punch her back, but her boyfriend, Todd Neiman enters and pins him to the door, forcing him to give back the drugs and hurting him until he apologizes to Page. Page and Neiman leave.[190][145]
In a trailer together, Page counts up the drug money they have made, and is delighted to see they made a good amount due to students wanting to get high because of midterms.[190][145]

Karen Page is woken at 5:35AM by a call from home, asking where she is. She apologizes for oversleeping and leaves to drive to Penny's Place, the family diner.[190][145]
Page drives through a snowy Vermont to get to the diner. Before getting out of the car, she cleans herself up in the hope that her drug-taking will not be noticeable.[190][145]
Karen talks with Kevin
Getting to work, Karen's brother Kevin Page gives her an excuse for her lateness that he has come up with for her: that she was picking up pastries. She relays the excuse to her father, Paxton, and promises everything is under control.[190][145]
Karen Page lets regular customer Chief Bernie Cohen in, who gives his regular order of eggs and sausage. Kevin tells her Paxton is outside.[190][145]
Heading out, Karen Page finds out that Paxton is buying a new $5000 grill. She tries to stop him, worried about how they can afford it, but Paxton insists on buying, saying they will figure something out.[190][145]
Karen Page serves Cohen his breakfast, but he points out blood in the eggs, as she realizes her nose is dripping. Kevin lets Karen know he has worked out she is not sober, but she avoids talking about it.[190][145]
As Karen Page takes out the bins, Kevin goes to speak to her. She admits to her drug use, but he says that is not what he wants to talk about. Kevin hands her a letter from Georgetown College telling her they have accepted her place, and Kevin explains that while she had deferred before, he reapplied for her in the hope she can get away from home for her own sake.[190][145]

Todd Neiman and Karen Page discuss the college placement, and agree that she will not go. Neiman suggests letting the diner just go under, but she says that it is important to her father to keep it, as it is all they have left of their mother. Neiman tells Page she could come and work for him full-time if necessary, and that they could visit places together if they wanted. She sees this, however, as an unrealistic dream. Karen gets a call from her father, telling her to come back immediately.[190][145]
On returning to Penny's Place, Paxton Page reveals he wanted her to be present for dinner. Paxton says that she seems bored at work and that he knows she spends time with Neiman, expressing his disapproval. Karen becomes angry and says that she should not leave for college, that the diner will go under without her, and when Paxton disagrees, she angrily tells him that her mother did not even like the diner, or the area, and only stuck around for him. Page grabs the scratch card they have been keeping since she died from cancer, never scratched and kept as a sign of hope, and decides to scratch it off and end the false hope she feels Paxton clings to. Finding that the card was another losing one, she sadly says that they all lose.[190][145]

Todd Neiman arrives to pick up Karen Page in his car. Kevin comes out of the diner and says Karen cannot just leave with him. Neiman tells Kevin he should have asked before sending the college letter, but Kevin retaliates by threatening to tell Chief Bernie Cohen about his drug-dealing. Karen explains that if he did, she too would be imprisoned, and gets in the car, with Neiman driving them away.[190][145]
Todd Neiman and Karen Page snort cocaine and drink together in Neiman's car. Neiman becomes concerned at how much she is consuming at once.[190][145]
Attack on Kevin Page: Driving to their trailer, they find the place on fire, and Kevin Page standing beside it, having been the one to set it ablaze, hoping it will help keep Karen away from the drugs. Neiman grabs a crowbar and starts beating Kevin, hitting Karen when she tries to stop him. Karen grabs a gun from Neiman's car and threatens Neiman with it, telling him to get away from Kevin. When he goes to hit Kevin again, she shoots him in the arm to stop him and grabs Kevin, getting him into Neiman's car and driving off.[190][145]

As Karen Page drives her injured and bloodied brother, she asks why he would do what he did, insisting she would have fixed their situation. He says that he already lost their mother, doing it because he could not lose her too. Not paying attention to the road due to being high, Page crashes into a roadside rail, overturning the car.[190][145]
Karen Page wakes, having been knocked unconscious, still strapped to her car seat. Looking over, however, she sees to her horror that Kevin has been killed by her recklessness.[190][145]
20th[]
Paxton Page lets his daughter, Karen know that Chief Bernie Cohen is going to omit her involvement in Kevin's death to save her from prison. Karen tries to talk to him about the accident but sobs, and Paxton, heartbroken, says he is glad her mother was not around to see it happen. He tells her that she needs to leave the area, unable to have her around.[190][145]
With no clear official story, nor a comment from the Pages, the locals in Fagan Corners start to speculate that Karen Page killed her brother.[190][191]
While Frank Castle and Curtis Hoyle are serving in Afghanistan, an IED goes off in a market. Hoyle runs in and gives medical help to a seriously injured child, while Castle works on securing the perimeter. Castle sees a woman, about 7-8 months pregnant, walking towards them, and while his job is to keep her away, he is distracted as he thinks about how his wife is pregnant back home. She goes to set off a detonation, but he freezes before he can bring himself to put her down, and she blows herself up in a suicide bombing. The child Hoyle is helping is killed, and Hoyle loses a leg. Castle drags Hoyle out, and Hoyle thanks him, but Castle feels guilty.[193][194]
Betty's father, General Thaddeus Ross lies to the scientists on the project, claiming their work will help protect soldiers from depleted uranium.[195][196]
Surveillance begins on Banner as he begins a year of work towards the Project Gamma Pulse, and Ross saves a CCTV photo of him.[195][84]

RJ Nakajima and his friends return to Hotel Inessa after a long day. Nakajima goes to bed while his friends go out, and heads toward his room.[197][198]
The Winter Soldier attacks Hotel Inessa, killing multiple guards. He gets shot at, but kills his attacker and his targets. He reaches his final target and pushes him into a hallway, saying "Hail HYDRA" as he chokes the man to death.[197][198]
Nakajima witnesses the Winter Soldier kill his target, and becomes too scarred to use his key to get in the house. The Winter Soldier approaches Nakajima, who begs for his life, saying that he did not see anything. The Winter Soldier then shoots Nakajima.[197][198]
Natasha Romanoff watches younger recruits for the Red Room practice ballet. Romanoff says that the girls will break, but Madame B. responds that only the breakable ones will.[143][35]
In K'un-Lun, 13-year-old Danny Rand finishes showing Davos the game tic-tac-toe, from the outside world. Davos talks about how they have been told the Iron Fist must kill their enemies as part of their duty in guarding K'un-Lun. Rand asks what Davos would do if he were part of the Hand, and Davos says he would not kill him, being like a brother to him. Davos' mother, Priya, enters and says that he is wrong, an Iron Fist must kill any member of the Hand, and that he will not face Shou-Lao with such weakness. She strikes his hands with a cane, having him recite that he must practice to master his skills for knowledge and strength, and that he strives to become the Immortal Iron Fist.[203][204]
Marc Spector leaves home with a packed bag as Elias Spector follows, promising that Wendy Spector will get better and they can fix their situation. Marc says that Elias was supposed to fix it, asking why he has not. Elias begs, not wanting to lose another son, but Marc refuses.[212][213]
Some time after their reunion, Garrett tells Ward he has been accepted into S.H.I.E.L.D. and will operate within as a sleeper agent for HYDRA.[214]
Garrett explains to Ward that being an agent of HYDRA will be very difficult, and that having attachments to anything or anyone is a weakness. Garrett then instructs Ward to kill Buddy, the dog who had helped him survive the wilderness for years. Ward looks Buddy in the eyes, unable to shoot him while looking him in the eyes, he instead has Buddy go fetch, using his sniper rifle to shoot him.[214]

Natasha Romanoff purposely loses a sparring match, much to Madame B.'s disappointment. Romanoff expresses fear of the Red Room's graduation ceremony. However, B insists that the ceremony is necessary.[34][35]
Stephen Strange goes on a date with Christine Palmer at an expensive restaurant. Palmer jokes that even Strange could not afford the place. Palmer gives Strange a gift, upon opening it, Strange finds it to be a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual stainless steel watch. Strange thanks her for the watch.[220][222]

Natasha Romanoff fires at a target, switching between hands and firing with deadly accuracy. The target is switched for a hostage, who Romanoff kills.[143][35]
Alisa Jones wakes in a clinic ward and is greeted by Dr. Karl Malus and Dr. Leslie Hansen. She asks how long she has been at the facility, and Malus informs her calmly that it has been 5 years, which causes Jones to panic, wanting to know what happened to her children after the crash. Malus begins to explain what has happened, telling her that they have saved her through cutting edge genetic editing, including having to reconstruct her face in a different manner to how it looked before. He then reluctantly informs her of Brian and Phillip's deaths, which she begins to panic about. Malus assures her that Jessica survived, but she angrily demands to see her. He tells her she is doing fine, and Alisa's anger turns simply to mourning.[230][16]
Jessica Jones, now a college student, reluctantly attends a club for the premiere of the music video for her adoptive sister Trish Walker's song I Want Your Cray Cray. Walker parties with friends and asks Jones whether she likes the video, but Jones bluntly says that she finds the song annoying. Walker heads with friends to the bathroom and Jones attempts to stop her, telling her that she knows she is off to take drugs and that she needs to stop. Walker ignores her.[230][16]
Jones confronts Dorothy Walker
Jones goes to the bar and finds Dorothy Walker, Trish's mother. She asks what she is doing at the venue since Trish does not like her mother due to the uncaring way she brought her up, and tells Dorothy that Trish is taking drugs. Dorothy dismisses this, claiming that Trish is doing just fine, and explains that she is Trish's backing dancer's agent. The bartender, Stirling Adams, is friendly to Jones, but his boss reprimands him, saying he is overpouring drinks. Adams quits his job in frustration, saying that he will start a club of his own and act better than his boss does.[230][16]
Walker tries to convince Jones to party with her, but Jones insists that she needs to study. They begin to argue, with Walker saying Jones is ungrateful to her considering she is the source of her tuition funding, but Jones says she only uses Walker's money because she had insisted, and states that she would be fine on her own, opening a cash machine up with her strength to demonstrate her point. Walker tells her not to come to her for help when she gets herself arrested, and Jones retorts the same for when Walker inevitably overdoses. Walker is driven away, and Adams finds Jones again, cheering her up as he jokes that he will buy her a drink.[230][16]

Culver University releases a memo stating their research on creating a cure for neurodegenerative diseases. They are so far unsuccessful, but close. Bruce Banner and Betty Ross are the lead doctors.[231][232]
Bruce Banner visits Betty Ross at the hospital and Thaddeus Ross admits to Banner that the project is being developed as a weapon, not just defense. Banner goes on the run. The military closes the lab building for a year and shuts down the Project Gamma Pulse. General Ross keeps some project data, while Betty also secretly holds onto data and remains at Culver University. After Banner's leak, Ross puts the military on his track. Angered by her father's treatment of Banner, Betty stops talking to him. This is the start of the Bruce Banner Manhunt, which spans for five years.[195][196][84]
Banner tries to flee from the United States and into Canada by sneaking into a truck that was heading through the border with Idaho. Banner is caught but when the Border Patrol officers try to arrest him, Banner is forced to transform into Hulk.[195][196]
Hulk flees after the incident. In his run, Hulk is sighted by locals along the U.S./Canada border.[195][196]
After the incident, a watch is found with the words "To Bruce, all my love, Betty" inscribed on the back of it.[195][196]
For her graduation ceremony from the Red Room, Natasha Romanoff is placed on a gurney, nervous, and wheeled into an operating room, where her uterus and ovaries are removed, sterilizing her.[143][34][51][35]

In the morning, Alisa Jones tries on a wig to cover her scarred scalp. She is taken to talk to Dr. Karl Malus. Malus wants to talk in hopes of getting to the root of her dissociative anger disorder, but she insists first on being told where Jessica is. He explains that Jessica has been adopted, which Alisa accepts, but when he lets her know that Jessica thinks she is dead she becomes angry. Malus tells her of how she nearly killed Jessica the first day she woke up, and Alisa angrily denies she could ever have done that. She breaks free of the cuffs restraining her in case of anger and moves to attack, losing control again, but Malus manages to sedate her.[246][16]
Jessica Jones and Stirling Adams kiss on the street, having become close and moved in together after Jones dropped out of college, and Adams tries to guess her middle name. She refuses to tell him, but he pickpockets her to check her ID, finding out her middle name is "Campbell", which Jones explains was her mother's maiden name. Adams says he would like to get her something special, eyeing up a leather jacket in a shop window. Jones smiles and breaks into the shop to take it. She would go on to wear it frequently for over a decade.[246][16]

Jones overhear Adams' conversation
Jessica Jones wakes and hears Stirling Adams talking angrily to someone on the phone. When he hangs up, he explains that it was his mother on the phone, angry because she wanted him to become a plumber, not run a night club. They discuss each other's families, and Adams suggests that Jones get back in touch with Trish Walker, having not seen her for a month, and bring him with her - and that after that he will take her to see his family.[246][16]
Jones and Adams go to the club Adams used to work at to see Trish Walker, who has recently been rehearsing for her tour. She tells her she can tell she is succumbing to addiction, but Walker ignores her. Jones tells her about Adams and brings him over to meet her, and they begin to get along, though Adams begins to talk about business. Jones takes him aside and asks if that was the only reason he was interested in seeing Walker, but he says he was only taking an opportunity. She says that they do not need to, since they can get whatever they want, whenever.[246][16]

Escape from the Industrial Garments & Handling Facility: Inez Green and Luanne McClure tend to Alisa Jones, believing she is sedated. Green begins to unlocks Jones' cuffs. McClure realizes, however, that Jones has not taken the necessary dosage of pills, and tries to warn Green but is too late - Jones jumps from her bed and throws Green across the room. Green crashes into a glass cabinet and gets shards of glass embedded in her back. Jones threatens McClure, demanding to know where Jessica is, and she tells her she is with Patsy Walker's family. Jones lets her go, but when McClure then rushes to trigger an alarm, Jones grabs her again and snaps her neck, before leaving.[246][16]

Attack on Wyatt's Crew: Soon after midnight, Jessica Jones and Stirling Adams return to their apartment. Their chatting is interrupted by a group of young men breaking into the apartment, led by a man named Wyatt. Wyatt demands money from Adams, having invested in his "Alias" club startup and got nothing in return yet. Adams and Jones attempt to tell Wyatt that the business is simply taking time, but Wyatt starts a fight. Jones defends Adams, attacking Wyatt and easily overpowering him with her super strength, forcing him and his group to leave.[246][16]
Alisa Jones finds Dorothy Walker and asks for information on Jessica's whereabouts, claiming to be an old teacher of Jessica's. Dorothy explains that all she knows is Jessica is living with her boyfriend, but Alisa manages to convince her to call Jessica and find out her address.[246][16]
Alisa Jones finds Jessica leaving her apartment, kicking open a fire hydrant to help some children who are struggling with the heat. She follows her to a bar, where Jessica is met by the boyfriend Alisa heard about, Stirling Adams.[246][16]
When Jessica Jones goes to the bathroom, Alisa follows. Jessica calls out to whomever is in the bathroom that she could use a tampon, and Alisa finds her one from a cabinet, happy to be able to help her daughter, even if she is not aware. She heads back up to the bar and sees Adams being taken outside by Wyatt and his gang, who have returned for him.[246][16]
Alisa Jones follows Adams outside and watches as Wyatt confronts Adams, demanding to know what other special talents Jessica has considering she managed to beat them all up so easily. Adams reluctantly agrees to let his girlfriend work for them, saying that he can convince her since she loves him and will do whatever he says. While Adams is only trying to talk his way out of the conversation, Alisa Jones misinterprets the conversation and believes that Adams is using Jessica.

Inside the bar, Jessica Jones asks the bartender where Adams is, but he does not know. She heads outside to find him. Alisa Jones confronts Adams, furious at him for seemingly exploiting her daughter. He tries to explain that he was trying to just get them off his back, but she loses her temper and her dissociative anger disorder kicks in. He asks who she is, and she snarls that she is Jessica's mother before grabbing his head and angrily beating it against the wall repeatedly, killing him. Jessica Jones turns the corner and is horrified to see Adams' body. She breaks down and cries as Alisa watches from a fire escape above, regretting her actions and realizing that she cannot now reintroduce herself to her daughter.[246][16]
July[]
A boy is born in New York City to a single mother, out of wedlock. A man becomes the mother's boyfriend, and as the couple go on to get closer, he ends up loving the child, and they choose to lie to the boy and claim the man is his father.[247][99]
Jessica Jones visits the club Trish Walker frequents, desperately sad and wanting to find her adoptive sister. She finds her in the bathroom, preparing to perform a sexual favor on a man who provided her and her friends with drugs. The man is rude to Jones and she grabs hold of him, scaring him until he gives up and leaves.[246][16]
The adoptive sisters head outside to a nearby rooftop. Jones explains that Wyatt and his gang have been arrested and assumes that they were indeed the killers. She cries and tells Walker that she feels responsible, believing she aggravated the men when she attacked them. Walker reassures her that Adams' death only happened because the men were killers, not because of anything she did, but Jones tells her she is also upset that Walker did not return her calls despite trying for 24 hours. She gets Walker to admit that she did not reply because she was high, and that she has become addicted and needs help, and Walker swears she will get help soon. The sisters lean on each other for comfort as a movie plays on a wall the rooftop overlooks, run by a man who plays movies on the first Friday of every month.[246][16]
On a beach trip, Karl Malus tells Alisa Jones about his past life when visiting the ocean. Jones comments on the ocean's nature of being powerful and carefree of what it does, explaining that watching the ocean makes her feel free. People start coming to visit the beach and Jones wants to leave, but Malus tells her that he is closing IGH, as Leslie Hansen and Miklos Kozlov have put the project in jeopardy. He promises to stay with Jones to find a way to correct her dissociative episodes, understanding that staying with her will be dangerous, but states he does not care, and the two share a kiss.[250][251]
Having been accepted into Columbia University, Matt Murdock enters his room and introduces himself to his new roommate Foggy Nelson, who is signing on to a Punjabi course at the last minute. Nelson admits that he heard about what had happened to Murdock as a child and is excited for their upcoming four years together.[254][255]
Spencer, Jr. is born to Cheryll and "Spencer." Not wanting to raise a child, Hollis kills himself and resurrects. He leaves Cheryll to raise Spencer, Jr. alone.[120][121]
Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson gatecrash an expensive party together, and there Murdock meets fellow student Elektra Natchios. As the two of them talk, Natchios deduces things about him, however, Murdock uses his wit to keep the conversation going, and the two leave the party together, getting into another person's sports car and driving off. From then on, the two continue to commit reckless acts together and get closer.[254][260][261]
Emil Blonsky and his team later arrives at the village discovering a path of destruction left by Hulk. This is reported to Thaddeus Ross, his first lead on Banner in months, since the incident on the U.S./Canada border.[195][196]
24th[]

Late at night, Matt Murdock and Elektra Natchios break into Fogwell's Gym. The two of them discuss their pasts and learn more about each other, with both also mentioning that they have enjoyed the last few weeks together. They begin to playfully fight in the boxing ring, but the intimacy leads the two of them passionately making love in that gym for the first time.[254][260][261]
Khonshu expresses his sentiment that the rest of the Ennead Council have abandoned humanity. He tries to expose their existence to the world, so the Council decides that they do not want to meddle in human affairs and banishes Khonshu.[262][263]
In the night, Elektra Natchios takes Matt Murdock to an expensive penthouse. They break in and go to the kitchen, taking food from the fridge and discussing the passionate and luxurious future that the two of them want to have together.[254][260][261]
When they hear noises, Natchios goes ahead of Murdock, and when he walks into the room, she gleefully tells him that she has Roscoe Sweeney, the killer of Murdock's father, bound to a chair for him to enact revenge on. She reveals that this was his house all along, and she expects him to appreciate the gesture.[254][260][261]
Murdock is at first reluctant, but Natchios manipulates him to start punching Sweeney. Because of her, he begins to savor the feeling of revenge. However, when she then tries to get him to kill Sweeney, Murdock realizes what a dangerous relationship he has got himself into. He steps away, breaking off his relationship with Natchios, and calls the police; however, when he looks around, Natchios is gone.[254][260][261]
A fourteen-year-old girl is taken hostage by human traffickers in Sofia. Natasha Romanoff arrives on a mission from the Red Room and slaughters the members of the trafficking ring, which the young girl sees. S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gennady Markov witness Romanoff's actions, having been sent by S.H.I.E.L.D.. Romanoff sets the traffickers' building on fire, unaware that there are hostages inside. The fourteen-year-old girl survives and decides to model her life after Romanoff.[269][35]
Brothers Tyrone and Billy Johnson play with their father's tape recorder. Billy has his younger brother beatbox while he attempts to freestyle rap.[275][276]
Lincoln Campbell, an alcoholic trying to fill the emotional void created by being an Inhuman unaware of his genealogy, argues with his girlfriend, who has been trying to help him be a better person. Angry, he gets in the car in order to leave the situation, but his girlfriend follows him into the car. Campbell, drunk, drives while they argue, and crashes into a telephone pole.[278][279]
Gordon arrives at the scene of the crash and takes Campbell and his girlfriend to Afterlife where the Inhumans heal the couple, and Campbell becomes a trusted member of the society of Inhumans, feeling that his emotional void can be filled.[278][279]
A man named Robert, working for the Aryan Brotherhood, leaves to make a buy with $1 million. The alternator on his truck breaks, and Robert goes to a bar, where he finds a man who objects to his white supremacist tattoos and political ideology. Robert gets in a fight with the man and ends up killing him, then getting arrested.[281][282]
31st[]
In jail, Robert thinks his life is finished. However, Anderson Schultz comes to visit him and convinces Robert that his situation was all determined by God, managing to get him free. Robert changes his name to John Pilgrim and goes to work for the Schultzes, doing what he believes to be God's work through them.[281][282]
The military loses Bruce Banner, who eventually arrives in Eastern Nunavut near Greenland, in the Arctic Circle to commit suicide in a place where his body would not be found.[195][283] In the Arctic, Banner tries to shoot himself in the mouth. However, the attempt fails and he turns into Hulk, who spits out the bullet, and Banner wakes up afterwards.[277]
Tandy Bowen listens to music with her headphones and colors while her parents start to argue. She considers taking her headphones off to listen, but decides against it.[285][135]
Akela Amador and two other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents conduct a raid to one of T. Vanchat's gulags. The agents are murdered and Amador is captured, spending four years in a cage.[184][287]
Ying Li tells Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing that she will tell them a bedtime story about Ta Lo. Shang-Chi gets excited, as Ying had not talked about Ta Lo in a long time. Xialing asks to be brought to Ying's home, but Ying says they can only visit in their imaginations. She says that only Ta Lo's guardians are able to watch her treasures, using the Shishi as an example. She explains that the shishi protect each other and their loved ones, which Shang-Chi likens to him protecting his younger sister.[273][234]
Ying says that Xialing is cute and clever, and comparing her daughter to the Jiu Wei Hu of Ta Lo, who find treats from around the world and protect their loved ones using their strength and intelligence. Shang-Chi asks if the Jiu Wei Hu are as wise as the Qilin, witch Ying says are unique. Ying says that while they could fly or swim, they choose to walk and protect the grass. She says that Qilin are kind and powerful, like Shang-Chi and Xialing. Xialing says that the flying guardians are her favorites.[273][234]
Ying shows Xialing and Shang-Chi the Fenghuang as a response to Xialing's comment about flying guardians. She says that the creatures are known for their compassion and loyalty, and are therefore a good choice for Xialing. Ying says that Xialing might one day find herself sharing her knowledge with others, like the Fenghuang do with their scrolls. She says that the phoenix is bathed in fire to provide people with warmth and light through the night.[273][234]
Shang-Chi points to a picture of Morris, asking what it is. Ying says that Morris is harder to describe than the other guardians of Ta Lo, and that while his actions are surprising, Morris will remain loyal. Shang-Chi points to an image of a dragon, suggesting it is the guardian most like himself. Ying agrees, saying that dragons will not protect everyone, but will do anything for those they care about. Shang-Chi says that he wants to grow up to be a dragon, and Ying says that he will have a different path. Shang-Chi expresses enthusiasm for Ta Lo, saying that their village has everything, but Ying says that it does not have everything, since it is missing them. Ying puts her children to sleep.[273][234]
Ying Li tells Xu Shang-Chi about the long-lived legend of the Ten Rings, an object which gave a man great power and eternal life which he used for power. Ying tells Xu that the man ran out of places on Earth to conquer, and therefore went after her home. Ying explains that the two fell in love that day, and tells him that there is more to know about the Ten Rings which he will learn when he is older.[273][32]
Xu asks his mother how she managed to beat his father, and she replies by telling him that she was empowered by the Great Protector. Xu asks if Ying can still do the things she could do when she had the Great Protector's power, but Ying says that she left her abilities behind when she left Ta Lo, but got something much better in return, referring to her family. Ying gives her son a green pendant, telling him it will help him find his way home. The two smile at each other.[273][32]
The Iron Gang, led by a man whose life Xu Wenwu had spared ten years prior, arrives, looking for Wenwu and wanting revenge for the near destruction of their gang. Ying tells the men that Wenwu is not the man he used to be and that his business has nothing to do with her children.[291][32]
The Iron Gang leader allows the children to leave unharmed but says that someone has to pay. Ying tells Shang-Chi and Xialing and tells them to go inside so that she can talk to their guests. Xialing turns to leave, but Shang-Chi stops, reminding Ying that she no longer has her powers. Ying assures him that there is nothing to fear.[291][32]
Ying tells Shang-Chi that she and his father will always be a part of him, and that he needs to take what he has been given and make it his own. Ying hugs Shang-Chi and says that she is proud of him and that their family needs him. Ying tells Shang-Chi to go inside, and Shang-Chi listens.[291][32]
Ying approaches the gang while Shang-Chi finds a place to watch from. Ying prepares for battle as more men arrive. Shang-Chi watches as Ying fights the gang and Ying is killed by the Iron Gang.[291][32]
Wenwu returns home with groceries to find Shang-Chi crying over Ying's body and calling for his mother.[291][32]
Shang-Chi checks on Wenwu and finds him stricken with grief. Wenwu says that while Ying told him that he could change, she was wrong. He looks at the Ten Rings and says that if he had not taken them off, Ying would have been alive. Wenwu looks at his son and says that the men will pay for his decision.[291][32]
Wenwu brings Shang-Chi to the casino where the Iron Gang are. After confirming with Shang-Chi that they are the men who killed Ying, Wenwu wordlessly begins to attack the gang members, using his rings to kill the people and decimate the remaining men. Shang-Chi watches in horror, getting out of the way as a man is thrown in his direction.[291][32]
Wenwu steps on the man, demanding to know where his boss is. The man insists that he does not know, and Wenwu kills him. Shang-Chi watches, terrified. Wenwu kneels in front of Shang-Chi and tells him that a blood debt must be paid in blood, asking him to help him pay the debt. Shang-Chi agrees, and the two return home.[291][32]
Xu Wenwu, reeling from the death of his wife, begins to train Xu Shang-Chi. Wenwu motions for Shang-Chi to approach him and grabs his son's hand, walking him through the training grounds of the Ten Rings Headquarters, leaving Xu Xialing behind. The pair meet with Death Dealer, who hits a man with a pole and stares Shang-Chi down, frightening the boy.[32][292]
Wenwu begins acting dismissive toward Xialing, saying that he cannot look at her without being reminded of his wife. Xialing is prevented from training alongside Shang-Chi.[291][32]
On Shang-Chi's first day of training, Xu Wenwu and Death Dealer watch as he begins punching and kicking a large wooden pole. After briefly stopping due to the pain, Shang-Chi is hit by Death Dealer as punishment.[291][32]
February[]
John Pilgrim, now living a devout Christian life and having fallen in love with a woman named Rebecca, discloses to Rebecca that his real name is Robert and how used to be a sinful man, describing his past violence and killings. She forgives and accepts him.[293][294]
Wenwu tends to Shang-Chi's wounds and asks if he has been practicing his English. Shang-Chi says that he has, and Wenwu says that he must strengthen his mind along with his body. After noticing Shang-Chi looking at the Ten Rings, Wenwu tells him that if he wants them to be like him one day, he has to be strong enough to carry them.[291][32]
Taking Wenwu's words to heart, Shang-Chi resumes punching the pole.[291][32]
N'Taki of Wakanda watches on near the Wakandan border, and orders his warriors to hold back the soldiers. Despite this, war continues to encroach on the border of their country, and the fighting goes on for over 2 more years, to the point where some even begin to lose sight of their goals.[161][296]
A woodpecker taps on the bark of a tree while Maya Lopez watches. Lopez takes a slingshot and shoots the bird down. Realizing what she has done, Lopez wraps the woodpecker in a cloth and runs over to Taloa Lopez. Lopez says that she found it fallen from a tree. Taloa asks if it really fell, so Maya tells her that she did not mean to hurt it but simply, she just wanted to see if she could hit it. She apologizes.[268][297]
Taloa tells Maya that she cannot hurt living things and in the old days, the Choctaw called referred to woodpeckers as "Biskinik." Taloa explains that they would give the Biskinik a message and the bird would tap it into trees, communicating when enemies were approaching. Maya asks if they can heal the woodpecker, so Taloa uses her healing ability to do just that.[268][297]

Taloa Lopez holds a box with the now-healed Biskinik in it, and Maya Lopez asks if they will see the bird again. Taloa says that they will, so Maya takes the bird out of the box and releases it. The two watch as the Biskinik flies away.[268][297]

Bonnie talks to Maya Lopez about the story of Chafa, the first Choctaw. Lopez calls Bonnie her sister, leading a confused Bonnie to corrects her, saying they are cousins. Lopez reassures her they are sisters. Suddenly, they hear thunder. Meanwhile, William Lopez, Taloa Lopez, Chula Battiest and Skully all sit by a campfire talking. Skully tells a story about Biscuits' father's love of peaches, ending it with saying that everybody should love something a lot. He then gives Battiest his hand. William does the same to Taloa.[300][297]
While pulling out of the driveway, Battiest mentions to Skully how Biscuits would be sad he was not there. Skully assures her that he will feel better. Battiest then looks out and sees a woodpecker.[300][297]
Back inside the Battiest Residence, William asks Taloa if she thinks Maya and Bonnie were going to stay in their tent all night despite it raining outside. Taloa jokingly signs to him that they will be back in five minutes. The girls run inside, and Maya asks for hot chocolate. Taloa apologizes, saying they are out of it, but she will go to the store and Maya could join her to choose which kind.[300][297]
Skully and Battiest drive through the rain. Skully sings, but notices Battiest's worry. She does not tell him about her fear from seeing the biskinik, instead brushing it off.[300][297]
In their own car, Taloa Lopez looks at Maya Lopez as thunder roars. She then goes to brake at a stop sign, only to find the brake lines had been cut. She frantically tries to press down on the break as Lopez signs to her, asking what is wrong. Suddenly, they cross the intersection and are met by another car, which crashes into the driver's side door.[300][297]
Lopez wakes up with a long piece of glass embedded into her shin. She then looks at her mother, only to see that she died on impact. Lopez inches over to her mother and puts her hand on her corpse before breaking down in tears.[300][297]
Maya is rushed into surgery, where doctors amputate her leg from the knee down.[300][297]
Maya Lopez rests in the hospital as a doctor checks on her. Outside the room, William Lopez is met by Skully and a grieving Chula Battiest. Skully asks how Maya is, but William reveals that she does not yet know about Taloa Lopez's death. He adds that the people who cut the brakes were taken care of. Battiest speaks up, asking if he thinks she feels better about more death. William gets tense, saying that it makes him feel better.[300][297]
Battiest then lets her emotions get the best of her, saying that she begged Taloa Lopez not to marry him and that she saw William and his brother as thugs and criminals. Battiest blames William for her daughter's death, prompting Skully to try to get her to leave. However, Battiest refuses, saying William should leave and that she will never forgive him.[300][297]
William tells the couple that his brother got him a job in New York. Battiest brutally tells him that it is not far enough away and storms out. Before following her, Skully reassures William that Battiest is just grieving. William says that they all are.[300][297]
William then walks into Maya's room and watches as she finishes a drawing. William reads it, seeing how it is a smiley face to give to Bonnie. William says that Bonnie will love it and misses Maya. Maya says she misses Bonnie and her mother. Maya then asks her father to tell Taloa that it is her fault as she made them go to the store together. William is then forced to not only tell Maya it is not her fault. Maya asks if Taloa is okay, saddening William.[300][297]
High Evolutionary conducts a horrific and gruesome cybernetics procedure on a baby raccoon, dubbed, Subject 89P13, with the numbers tattooed onto him. The procedure turns the infant raccoon into a Halfworlder, with a large number of cybernetics, greatly increased intelligence and a prolonged lifespan. Once the operation is complete, High Evolutionary orders him to be stitched up and put with Batch 89.[115][298]
Theel throws 89P13 into a cage containing the rest of Batch 89. Subjects 89Q12, 89A95, and 89L06 each introduce themselves and try to comfort the terrified infant 89P13. 89P13 speaks for the first time, expressing his immense pain to the others, so 89Q12 uses a cloth to tend to 89P13's injuries and comforts him.[115][298]
Moving out of Tamaha, William Lopez gets Maya Lopez ready and carries her into the car. William takes one last look at Chula Battiest before getting in the car to leave for New York. Not understanding the situation, Maya sticks her head out of the window, asking if Bonnie can come, and Bonnie says that she wants to. Maya continues to try to get Bonnie to join, only for William to drive off, leaving Bonnie to run after her. However, Battiest stops Bonnie.[300][297]
William goes on to tell Maya how Battiest ripped apart the family, causing Maya to resent Battiest, who resented Maya back because she reminded her too much of Taloa Lopez.[304][297]
Heartbroken, Battiest chooses to keep the Lopez's house in tact.[304][297]
Molly Hernandez's parents give her a hair clip with a kitten design as a gift. Later that day, they go to the Church of Gibborim in order to help choose who their latest sacrifice victim will be for Jonah.[306][307]
Maya Lopez attends her first day of second grade at a regular school, despite her father's assurances that she could attend a deaf school. Lopez looks around at the her laughing classmates as the teacher tells the students to open their workbooks. As the teacher teaches, Lopez begins filling out the worksheet instead of trying to read her lips.[26][297]
The teacher notices Lopez writing and approaches her. She gets Lopez's attention and says something which Lopez does not understand, aside from the word "interpreter." The teacher starts to tell her to pay attention, only to find that Lopez had completed the page with little difficulty. The teacher resumes teaching.[26][297]
That night, William Lopez sits in bed with his daughter and makes shadow puppets. Maya asks William says what sound the sky makes, so William says that it is quiet, like her. Maya asks what sound dragons make, so William growls and signs "growling," making Maya laugh. Maya asks if dragons are real, so William says that they live in a different world. Maya asks what would happen if they came to the human world, and William says it would make them stronger.[26][297]
Maya asks her father why she is not attending a deaf school, and William apologizes to her, insisting it will be better for her. Maya asks if she will have to stop signing, so William explains that she will have to learn to jump between both the hearing and deaf worlds by watching.[26][297]
During a water break, William Lopez tells Maya to be good in class and reminds Maya that speed is more valuable than size. He tells her that a man she calls "uncle" will take her home and leaves. The man approaches Maya and chuckles, squeezing her cheek.[26][297]
Kazimierczak sits next to Maya Lopez, and begins speaking to her in Polish, saying that their fathers work together. Lopez signs to him that she is deaf, so Kazimierczak points toward their parents working together. Lopez shows him the proper signs, which Kazimierczak imitates. Maya communicates to Kazimierczak that he signed it correctly and they fist bump.[308][297]
As class resumes, Lopez approaches her opponent. The pair bow and begin the fight. Lopez easily dodges a strike from her opponent and swiftly pushes him to the ground, winning the duel.[26][297]
As Lopez packs her bag, Wilson Fisk tells Lopez that although her father could not get her, the good news is that they can get ice cream. He signs "ice cream" to Lopez, who thanks Fisk.[308][297]
7th[]
Inside his cage within Arête Laboratories, a now older and bipedal 89P13 cheerfully laughs and plays with his cellmates. They all fall over laughing, and 89Q12 says that she enjoys having friends.[115][298]
12th[]
At the Brooklyn Karate Academy, Maya Lopez tells William Lopez that she wants to be like him. William acknowledges this, but tells her to focus on school so that she can grow up to have a better life than his. Maya nods in understanding and watches as William walks over and hands an envelope to a member of the Tracksuit Mafia. Wilson Fisk approaches Maya and pinches her cheek.[300][297]
In class, Lopez prepares to fight a student who underestimates her due to her amputation.[300][297]
At Arête Laboratories, Theel and Vim study 89P13 as he sits in High Evolutionary's lap and perfectly solves mathematical equations. High Evolutionary, impressed, teaches him about Counter-Earth, where the experiments will go once they are ready. 89P13 notes that he sees rockets flying in the color blue, and High Evolutionary teaches him about the sky, amazing 89P13. 89P13 asks about the music that is playing, and High Evolutionary explains to him that it details his mission to perfect an imperfect universe.[115][298]
High Evolutionary shows 89P13 his machine that can force animals to undergo millions of years of programmed evolution in moments. He tests it on a turtle, and once the evolution is complete, the turtle is incredibly violent due to the machine overproducing certain proteins. 89P13 points out the problem and figures out what is causing the malfunction. High Evolutionary expresses shock and being impressed by 89P13's ability to think independently.[115][298]
Inside Arête Laboratories, Batch 89 lays side by side. 89A95 tells his friends that he has been thinking. 89Q12 agrees, saying she has been thinking about how when they live on Counter-Earth, they will need names, and so she chooses to name herself Lylla, which the others compliment. 89A95 chooses the name Teefs, due to his teeth being his most prominent feature. 89L06 decides to name herself Floor, since she is lying on the floor. The whole group then looks to 89P13, wondering what his name will be. 89P13 tells them that one day, he will create rockets so they can all fly away together, inspiring him to call himself Rocket.[115][298]
Gene and Alice Hernandez worry in their lab. They get on a video call with Dale and Stacey Yorkes and show them that they have dug up samples of strange, pulsating, glowing rocks. The Hernandez's daughter, Molly, meanwhile plays with one of the samples in the lab. The Hernandezes hear the lab door close behind them, which confuses them, and when Gene goes to check, he finds the door locked. The couple are unable to get out, as Molly meanwhile continues to play with the rock. Gene and Alice realize an explosive has been placed in the room as it lights up to detonate, and they rush to protect Molly as it goes off.[314][71]
Leslie Dean, who had locked the door and planted the bomb, leaves the site and calls Tina Minoru, telling her the Hernandezes have been dealt with. Distracted while cooking, Minoru burns her hand on her frying pan.[314][71]
Molly Hernandez sits in the burning wreckage of her parents' lab, the only survivor. Her eyes glow, the rock having imbued her with powers.[314][71]
Working at Goodman University, Topher Vasquez is present during the explosion. He finds a sample of the rocks from the Hernandezes' lab, which gives him strength abilities. He keeps the rocks, which would lead to an addiction.[314][315]
5th[]
12-year-old Donny Chavez's parents drive home from a movie night while Chavez is asleep. They get hit by a young driver who had only recently gotten their license, killing them both.[316][123]
Gene and Alice Hernandez's funeral is held. All the members of PRIDE attend, along with their children. Molly Hernandez is also present, in a wheelchair from her injuries in the explosion. Stacey Yorkes comforts her.[317][314]
At the wake, Janet Stein and Catherine Wilder toast to Gene and Alice Hernandez. Wilder worries that any of them could have also been killed, but Stein insists the fire must have been an accident.[317][314]
Geoffrey Wilder confronts Robert Minoru, saying he has noticed Tina's bandaged, burned hand, and that he believes she started the fire. Robert states that Tina simply burned her hand on a frying pan, but Wilder says he does not believe him.[317][314]
Dale Yorkes tells Stacey that he is worried PRIDE could come after them if they find out they spoke to the Hernandezes moments before their deaths, and think the Yorkeses might also know something they should not. Stacey, however, says they can protect themselves if necessary, and owe it to the Hernandezes to now help Molly.[317][314]

The Yorkeses approach Molly Hernandez and are kind to her. They say that they want to offer her a new home with them, and Hernandez accepts.[317][314]
18th[]
Gert Yorkes eats apple slices and peanut butter as a snack. Her parents, Dale and Stacey Yorkes, sit her down tell her that Molly Hernandez is going to be her sister. Yorkes reacts with enthusiasm, having always wanted a sister.[318][319]
As part of her defection to S.H.I.E.L.D., Natasha Romanoff is assigned to kill the head of the Red Room, Dreykov. She and Clint Barton go to Budapest, rig a five-story building with explosives, and lure Dreykov into the place bringing in his daughter Antonia. Barton says that they need confirmation that Dreykov is in the building, and Romanoff watches Antonia enter and greet her father. Once both are inside, Romanoff gives Barton the signal to detonate the bombs.[51][322]
An hour and twelve minutes later, Rhodes and Stark walk into a club, agreeing that Potts can easily outmaneuver them. Stark sees two women and asks which one is hotter, with Rhodes responding that the brunette is. He reminds Stark of his promise to talk about Stark's upcoming trip to Afghanistan.[327][326]
Stark tells him they will, but that he wants to talk to the women first. As Rhodes worries, Stark jokingly assures him that the women are not spies. The brunette introduces herself as Eloise and the blonde as Celeste.[327][326]
Stark asks the women what they know about Afghanistan, before telling them about his new weapon, the Jericho, which he plans to showcase in two weeks despite Rhodes' insistence that he should not. Stark then stands up to dance as Rhodes tells him he does not need to go and that Afghanistan is not his place. Stark responds that he hates when people tell him his place. He then walks away with Eloise to go back to his house. Celeste asks if Rhodes is going, finding him cute, so Rhodes agrees to go.[327][326]
As they walk out, Stark accidentally walks into a man who recognizes him as the man who left with his partner the week prior. The man punches Stark, but Rhodes punches the guy in retaliation. The two men begin fighting.[327][326]
Celeste asks about the woman, but Stark says he does not remember and bets five hundred dollars that Rhodes will win. Celeste says she does not have five hundred dollars, so Stark gives her the money so he could win it back. Celeste tells him no bet and that she is keeping the money, prompting Stark to say he hates flirting with smart girls. Rhodes then wins the fight.[327][326]
Stark remarks that the United States Air Force trained Rhodes well, prompting Rhodes to remind Stark that he trains the Air Force. Rhodes points out that fights happen around him even at nightclubs, and that he would be in danger in a hot zone such as Afghanistan. Stark dodges his warnings and they go back to his house with Celeste and Eloise.[327][326]
Tony Stark wins the Apogee award, as a video biography is played at the ceremony hosted at Caesars Palace. James Rhodes presents the award to Stark, but Obadiah Stane accepts it on Stark's behalf, joking that Stark is always working. However, Stark instead gambles at the casino.[328][329][164]
On the casino floor, Stark plays Craps as he hits on various women. Rhodes goes to the casino and scolds Stark for missing the event and gives Stark the award, but Stark is too preoccupied with his game. He gestures for Rhodes to blow on the dice for luck, but Rhodes hits his hand away, causing a losing roll.
Happy Hogan escorts Rhodes and Stark outside, where Stark is approached by Vanity Fair reporter Christine Everhart, who questions him on the morals of war profiteering. Stark gives witty responses to her questions, insisting that he will stop making weapons once they are no longer necessary for peace. Stark mentions that his company has saved lives with military funding and flirts with her, taking her back to his mansion.[328][329][164]
Stark and Everhart sleep together, during which they fall off the bed, leading to Stark laughing.[328][329][164]
Stark works on one of his hot rods' engines as Potts heads to the garage and informs him that he is late for his flight to Afghanistan. Potts asks Stark about a painting he is buying a painting and a Massachusetts Institute of Technology commencement speech before mentioning that it is her birthday. Stark realizes that he forgot and tells her to buy something nice, to which Potts responds that she already did.[164] Stark packs his equipment to leave.[328][329][330]
On the flight, Rhodes complains about Stark's irresponsible tendencies as Stark orders him a drink, leading to Rhodes and Stark drinking together.[328][329][164]

Rhodes and Stark, now drunk, talk about Rhodes' sense of community from being in the military.[164] As Rhodes tells Stark that he could be more than what he is, Stark comments on the attractiveness the flight attendants. Trixie sits on Stark's lap and invites him to bed while Rhodes attempts to advise Stark to get rest, as they have a briefing. The other flight attendants sit with Rhodes and flirt with him.[328][329][331]
11th[]
Tony Stark eats breakfast as James Rhodes, hungover, tries to get some rest. Rhodes is interrupted by the flight attendants announcing that the plane is preparing to land.[328][329][331]
The plane lands at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, Stark greets the generals and prepares for his presentation of the Jericho.[164] A general asks how Stark's flight was, so Stark turns as Rhodes leaves the plane and says that it was choppy.[328][329][331]
The soldiers present do a presentation for Stark.[328][329][331]
As Stark presents the Jericho, he explains the specifics of the weapon, remarking that America and his father are both feared and respected. He then demonstrates the weapon's capabilities, decimating the side of a nearby mountain.[328][329][164]
After the successful presentation, Stark drinks as he sells Jericho missiles to the United States Air Force and readies for the trip back to base. Stane calls Stark, who tells him that the sale was successful. Rhodes attempts to join Stark, who cuts him off and asks him to use a different Humvee.[328][329][164]
Stark is driven back to base by a military convoy and jokes with the soldiers. Jimmy Ryan asks to take a picture, which Stark accepts. Adam Pratt readies the camera when the Humvee in front of them explodes due to an attack by the Ten Rings.[328][329][164]
Stark is nearly killed by shrapnel
Pratt, Jimmy and Ramirez rush to engage in the firefight, ordering Stark to stay inside. Stark watches as the three soldiers are killed. before running for cover behind a rock and tries to call for help, but is horrified to see that Stark Industries Fragmentation Shells were being used when one lands next to him. The missile explodes, sending shrapnel into Stark's chest as he passes out from shock.[328][329][164]
The Ten Rings take Stark captive, keeping him in a cave. While Stark is unconscious, fellow inmate, Ho Yinsen works to save Stark's life by implanting a small electromagnet into his chest, keeping the shrapnel from his heart. Yinsen attaches the magnet to a car battery to power it. Stark screams in pain as Yinsen finishes the surgery.[328][329][164]
Sometime later, Stark wakes up to the Ten Rings holding him captive and recording a video, telling someone that they do not intend to kill the great Tony Stark. The speaker threatens Stane for his deception.[328][329][164]
Stark wakes up in the cave, and attempts to move, but Yinsen advises against it. Stark realizes that he is connected to an car battery powering a magnet in his chest.[328][329][164]
Yinsen makes dinner as he explains the magnet to Stark, telling him that the shrapnel would kill Stark in a matter of days were it not for the magnet. Stark realizes that they are on camera, and Yinsen mentions when he and Stark had met, but Stark does not remember. The conversation is interrupted by Abu Bakaar welcoming Stark and instructing him to build a Jericho missile in exchange for his life. Stark refuses, but is dunked underwater until he complies.[328][329][164]
Bakaar escorts the men
Bakaar and his men carry Stark outside the cave, to show Stark their supply of Stark Industries weapons, explaining that once the Jericho is finished, Stark will be set free. Bakaar shakes Stark's hand as Stark and Yinsen agree that Bakaar is lying about releasing him.[328][329][164]
12th[]
Back in the cave, Ho Yinsen and Tony Stark sit by the fire. Yinsen laments to Stark, asking him if creating weapons used by murderers is what Stark wants his legacy to be. The hopeless Stark says that this will not be his legacy.[328][329][164]
Stark instructs the Ten Rings members on what materials he will need to build the missile as Yinsen interprets for him. The men gather materials into Stark and Yinsen's cell.[328][329][164]
Stark works to carefully dismantle a missile as Yinsen reveals more information on the Ten Rings. Stark removes the main mechanisms from the missile as Abu Bakaar watches on the security camera.[328][329][164]
14th[]
A group of Red Room scientists working under Melina Vostokoff prepare to perform a surgery, attempting to achieve chemical mind control. The experiment fails and the girls involved are killed as a blanket is placed over them.[51][35]
Tony Stark drills parts of a missile, removing the palladium core. Ho Yinsen asks to be included in the planning, wanting to help. However, Stark ignores him.[332][329][164]
Stark removes the palladium from the core, throwing the rest of it away. Stark asks Yinsen to get him 11 more cores of palladium, and Yinsen obliges. Ten Rings members continue to watch the pair's movement.[332][164]
Stark puts sand into a cup, placing a metal ring inside it.[332][164]
Yinsen heats the palladium over the fire. He walks it over to the table as Stark asks him to be careful. Yinsen replies that he has steady hands. Yinsen pours the molten palladium into the cup as he properly introduces himself to Stark.[332][164]

Stark carefully works as he welds wires onto the palladium ring.[332][164]
Stark finishes work on the miniaturized Arc Reactor as it glows with energy, causing the lights to flicker. Yinsen comments on the amount of energy coming from it, adding that it could power his heart for fifty lifetimes. Stark replies that it could also power something big for fifteen minutes.[332][164]
Ho Yinsen and Tony Stark play Backgammon together. Yinsen tells Stark about his family in Gulmira, hoping to see them. Yinsen realizes that Stark does not have a family, commenting that Stark has everything and nothing.[332][164]
Search for Bruce Banner: Nick Fury, in disguise, finds Bruce Banner in a bar and tries to find out what Thaddeus Ross' "Super-Soldier Program" did to him. He tells Agents Johnson and Peterson to gain Banner's trust and see how he reacts to certain things, so the agents pretend they were dating and Johnson cheated on Peterson with him. Banner gets confused when Johnson pulls him toward her, and Peterson threatens him. The stress of the situation causes Banner to turn into Hulk and go on a rampage.[195][333]
Maya Lopez walks out of her school and sees an ice cream vendor. Lopez points to a flavor and signs that she wants it, but the vendor tells her verbally that they are out of them. The man gets irritated at her for not being able to talk and starts mocking Lopez. Wilson Fisk watches from his car and gets angry. Lopez goes into the car and Fisk helps her unpack. He then tells her to wait there as he does something.[304][297]
Fisk walks over to the vendor and grabs him from behind, throwing him into an alley wall. Fisk grabs the vendor, throwing him head first into a dumpster. As the man puts his hands up in defense, Fisk repeatedly punches him, staining his suit and hands with blood.[304][297]
Fisk calms down and calls an employee, telling them to bring him a fresh set of clothes as he does not want Lopez seeing the blood. However, he hangs up when he sees that Lopez is looking at him from the street, having seen the beating. Fisk holds up his hand, telling her not to be afraid. To his surprise, Lopez runs over to the ice cream vendor and kicks him. Fisk then takes her hand and they walk away together.[304][297]
Eva Belyakov, a member of the Inhuman community in Afterlife, goes rogue after Jiaying refuses to allow Belyakov's unstable daughter, Katya, to go through Terrigenesis. She takes with her an assortment of stolen Terrigen Crystals, which she uses to transform Katya without the proper mental conditioning. Katya develops sensory manipulating powers and a hunger for pain. The mother-daughter duo travel to Bahrain, where they create chaos by using Katya's powers to sap the emotional energies from local civilians.[335][336]
Eva and Katya Belyakov assume control of a group of gangsters and hold the entire S.H.I.E.L.D., minus Coulson and May, hostage within a warehouse. May ventures into the warehouse alone and crosses off the controlled gangsters and Eva. Katya reveals herself to May and nearly uses her powers to kill the subjugated S.H.I.E.L.D. team, forcing May to shoot her dead. For her role in saving them, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team gives May the nickname "The Cavalry", a moniker she grows to despise.[335][336]
Jiaying and Gordon travel to Manama with the intention of dealing with Eva and Katya themselves, but find that S.H.I.E.L.D. has already killed them.[335][336]
30th[]
Melinda May returns to the United States, traumatized by the ordeal in Manama. She shuts herself off from everyone, including her husband Andrew Garner. Over time, their marriage falls apart. With approval from Maria Hill, May switches from field duty to a simple desk job.[335][336]
Abu Bakaar interrupts Stark as he welds. Al-Wazar enters and recounts Gengis Khan's rule over Asia, comparing it to his own potential empire. Al-Wazar asks Stark and Yinsen why they failed to build the missile, and Yinsen replies that they are working. Al-Wazar does not believe him and orders his men to bring Yinsen to his knees.[337][329][164]
The Ten Rings force Yinsen onto the ground as al-Wazar readies a hot rock to put in his mouth. Al-Wazar demands the truth, but Yinsen insists they are building the Jericho. Stark attempts to intervene, telling al-Wazar that he needs Yinsen to be his assistant. Al-Wazar gives them until the next day to finish the missile.[337][329][164]
Stark repeatedly hammers a piece of heated metal, forming it into a helmet. Stark places it into water to cool it before showing it to Yinsen.[337][329][164]
The men arrive at Stark and Yinsen's cell, yelling for Yinsen to stop in Hungarian. Yinsen tries to answer them despite not speaking Hungarian. Getting tired of waiting, the men open the door, which was rigged to explode by Stark. Al-Wazar sees the video feed cut out and orders his men to attack. Yinsen works to program the suit as Stark gives him specific instructions.[337][329][164]
Yinsen screws the suit shut as the men approach. He realizes that the suit will not be done in time and decides to buy Stark time by shooting at the Ten Rings' soldiers. Stark yells for him to come back but he has already left.[337][329][164]
Yinsen shoots at the men, only to be cornered and fatally wounded.[337][329][164]
The suit reaches full power, causing the lights to flicker. Ten Rings members rush into the cell, finding it empty. Stark attacks one of the men, taking them out. The remaining men open fire, but Stark attacks them in the suit. Stark heads down the hallway, killing Ten Rings members as he passes.[337][329][164]
Some of the men hide behind a door. Stark destroys the door and punches a wall, causing his arm to get stuck. The fleeing men attempt to shoot him, but are taken out by the ricocheting bullets. Stark frees his arm and continues forward.[337][329][164]
al-Wazar goes to see the commotion with a grenade launcher with him as Stark finds Yinsen in critical condition. Yinsen tries to warn Stark but al-Wazar fires at Stark, who fires his own missile at al-Wazar, burying him in rubble. Stark rushes over to Yinsen, planning to rescue him, but Yinsen tells him that dying was always his plan, and that he will be reunited with his family in death. In his final breaths, Yinsen warns Stark to not waste his life.[337][329][164]
Ten Rings members aim for the cave exit as Stark's footsteps echo. Stark reaches the cave exit as the men open fire. Stark activates his flamethrower, wiping them all out. Stark makes his way through the Ten Rings Base, destroying all of his weapons. As the base goes up in flames, Stark attempts to fly away, but instead crashes into the desert sands.[164][329][337]
Stark continues his trek through the desert until he is found by the United States Air Force. Stark yells in excitement and waves his hand as the helicopter lands. James Rhodes runs out of it, relieved to find Stark alive, and hugs his friend.[337][329][164]
Inside, Potts is greeted by Phil Coulson from the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Potts remarks at the length of the agency's name, and Coulson asks to debrief Stark about his escape. Stark begins the conference by asking everyone to sit down, wishing for the event to be less formal. Stark talks about how he wonders if his father had doubts about his company making weapons, revealing that he witnessed young American soldiers get killed by his weapons.[337][329][164]
A reporter asks what had happened in Afghanistan, and Stark reveals that he had realized that he can do more for the world than simply making weapons, adding that he will be shutting down weapon production at Stark Industries, causing the crowd to erupt into questions as Stane pulls Stark away. Stane tells the reporters to glad that Stark has returned healthily.[337][329][164]
Stark meets with Stane, who voices his concerns with Stark's decision. Stark tells him that he wants his legacy to be more than weapons, and Stane replies that it is their job. Stark suggests looking further into Arc Reactor technology, which Stane dismisses before Stark reveals the miniaturized Arc Reactor embedded in his chest. Stane reminds Stark that they are a team and that Stark should not make big decisions by himself.[337][329][164]
Stark returns home and is greeted by J.A.R.V.I.S., who says that he had calculated a 0.25% that Stark would make it home safe. Stark finds a new watch on the table, with a note from Obadiah Stane saying "Thank god it wasn't you time." Stark admires the watch before putting it on. J.A.R.V.I.S. reveals that Stark has 1,713 missed voicemails. Stark scrolls through a few of them before deleting them all. J.A.R.V.I.S. detects electromagnetic energy, and Stark tells him to start their scanner.[337][329][331]
Potts goes downstairs, where Stark asks her help in replacing his electromagnet with a newer Arc Reactor. Potts squeamishly helps him with the operation, nearly causing him a cardiac arrest from a mistake she makes, but ultimately succeeding in the procedure. Stark then tells her to simply destroy of the old reactor, but she decides against it.[337][329][164]
Tony Stark starts a new log, dating this test as "Day One". He notes how his Iron Man Armor: Mark I originally was meant to escape as well as to stop the shrapnel from reaching his heart. However, now he wants to make a Mark II which he can use take down others who have his weapons.[341][329][342]
5th[]
Only a few days after his return, and with his injuries healed, Tony Stark visits James Rhodes at Edwards Air Force Base as he talks to air force recruits in a hangar. He explains to Rhodes that he is considering starting a new project, asking Rhodes to be a part of it. Stark explains that the project is not for the military, prompting Rhodes to say Stark needs more time to get his mind right before walking away.[343][329][164]
In his garage, Stark instructs J.A.R.V.I.S. to open a file for his secret new design project, dubbing it "Mark II." Stark renders a projection of the Mark I's blueprints, and strips away unnecessary parts, attempting to perfect the design.[343][329][164]
In his garage, Tony Stark works on his new armor, putting together the boots of the suit, with help from Dum-E. Stark and Dum-E struggle with each other, and Stark makes fun of the robot.[164][343]
Stark begins his log of tests for the new Mark II armor, beginning testing. Stark has Dum-E stand by for fire safety, while U records Stark's test. Stark first begins by testing the flight capabilities. However, he underestimates the power of the thrusters, and flies up and backwards into the wall behind him, before falling to the ground. Dum-E sprays Stark with a fire extinguisher despite the lack of anything on fire.[164][343]
Stark manipulates a holographic render of the handheld thrusters, before sliding his arm into it.[343][329][164]
12th[]
Stark tests his flight stabilizers
In his garage, Tony Stark tries on the newly fabricated arm thruster, as Pepper Potts comes downstairs with a gift-wrapped box that she gives to Stark before informing that Obadiah Stane is visiting. Potts then questions Stark's making of weapons, but Stark clarifies that they are merely flight stabilizers, before activating it, blasting him backwards.[343][329][164]
Stark goes upstairs and finds Stane, who had just returned from a trip to New York. Stane laments that the trip would have gone smoother had Stark been there, but Stark replies that he is lying low as Stane had asked him to. Stane explains that the Board wishes to lock Stark out, believing Stark's new direction to not be in the company's best interest. Stark admits that he is now being responsible, and Stane tries to ask for the specs for the Arc Reactor, but Stark refuses.[343][329][164]
15th[]
Stark uses thrusters to take flight
On Day 11 of tests, Tony Stark tries again with the flight capabilities. Stark warns Dum-E not to spray him this time as U records. Stark begins the test, activating 1% thrust capacity. Stark is lifted into the air, managing to control the thrusters. He activates 2.5% thruster capacity and manages to fly around his garage, controlling the flight. Stark lands on the ground, excited that he can now fly.[343][329][164]
Stark dons the suit, before uploading J.A.R.V.I.S. into the suit's HUD. J.A.R.V.I.S. readies a flight simulation and data calculations, but Stark instead begins flying, ignoring J.A.R.V.I.S.'s warnings. Stark engages the thrusters and speeds through his mansion before reaching the sky. Amazed, Stark speeds higher and higher, cheering that he had truly achieved flight.[341][329][164]
Stark flies over Malibu, further testing his HUD on people he passes.[341][329][164]
Stark, now at mach 0.30, decides to test the suit's altitude capabilities and flies straight up, attempting to reach the world record of 85,000 feet. As Stark ascends, ice begins to build up on the suit, causing him to plummet from the sky. Stark free falls, but manages to break the ice, re-enabling his suit's flight before hitting the ground. As Stark speeds away from Malibu, he cheers at his success.[341][329][164]
Stark crashes through the roof
Stark returns to his mansion, and tries to land on the roof. However, he falls through the roof, landing inside his garage onto one of his cars, where Dum-E sprays the fire extinguisher once again.[341][329][164]
Following the Mark II's crash landing, Stark holds an ice pack to his head and notices the box left behind by Pepper Potts. Upon opening it, he discovers his old Arc Reactor on the inside. Stark decides to put the Arc Reactor in a case and marks it with the text, "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart."[164][329][341]
Tony Stark analyzes data from his first flight with the Mark II. Wanting to resolve the icing problem, he instructs J.A.R.V.I.S. to rebuild his suit using a gold titanium alloy. J.A.R.V.I.S. renders the model as Stark overhears the TV showing a news report on the third annual benefit at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Stark holds a prototype faceplate mask over his face as he watches the reporter says that no one expects him to appear.[341][329][164]
J.A.R.V.I.S. finishes the render, and Stark, inspired by the color scheme of his Ford Flathead Roadster, tells J.A.R.V.I.S. to add red paint to the next suit, code-named the "Mark III". J.A.R.V.I.S. begins automated fabrication, giving an estimated completion time of five hours.[341][329][164]
Stark arrives at the Concert Hall. Obadiah Stane answers news reporter's questions, stating that weapons manufacturing is just a small part Stark Industries, but is drowned out as people cheer for Stark's arrival. A woman asks if Stark remembers her, which he does not. On his way inside, Stark compliments a man who he believes to be Hugh Hefner. The man turns around, confused.[341][329][164]
Stark approaches Stane, who expresses surprise at Stark's arrival before asking him to take this slow, as the board is right where he wants them.[341][329][164]
Inside, Stark goes to the bar and orders a scotch, but is met by Phil Coulson. Coulson introduces himself, using his agency;s full name, causing Stark to advise him on finding a shorter name. Coulson requests a meeting with Stark, suggesting 7:00 PM on the 24th at Stark Industries Headquarters, Stark, who is focused on Pepper Potts wearing a purple backless dress, agrees, not fully listening to what Coulson had said.[341][329][164]
Stark approaches and compliments Potts, asking where she got the dress from, and she reminds him that it was a birthday present from him. Stark offers her a dance before pulling her into it. As the pair dance, Stark asks if he is making her uncomfortable, to which she comments that she is dancing with her boss in a revealing dress. Stark jokes that he could fire her, and Potts responds that he would not last a week without her. Stark asks if she would like to get some air, which Potts agrees to as Coulson watches.[341][329][164]
Outside, Potts and Stark disagree on whether their dancing was weird. Potts explains that Stark cannot understand why she would worry it is weird, but Stark claims she is exaggerating. Potts and Stark both lean in to kiss each other, but Potts asks for a drink. Stark leaves to get it.[341][329][164]
Stark returns to the bar and orders Potts' drink. Christine Everhart walks over and asks about Stark Industries' involvement in the attacks on Gulmira. Stark points out that he had not approved any weapons shipments. Everhart responds that his company did, so Stark points her, saying that he is not his company.[341][329][164]
Stark confronts Stane, showing him the pictures of Gulmira. Stane tells Stark he is being naive, but Stark says that he now has a line that they cannot cross. Stane insists on posing for a picture, before revealing to Stark that he was the one who filed the injunction against Stark, claiming to be protecting him. Stark watches angrily as Stane leaves.[341][329][164]
