  • The aspiring author A.D. Doug plants his own book, The Zartan Contingent, in Vraton's Book Store just so he could pick it up and try to buy it. The cashier does not recognize the book, leading Doug to praise himself, saying that he reads everything the author put out and his books are really good. Doug exclaims there are only a few books left, trying to get any other customers to hear him.[2][3]
  • Doug Takes Back Books

A.D. Doug is told to leave

However, the cashier has trouble when the book does not scan out. She tries again only to realize the author was the man standing in front of her. The cashier's boss tells Doug that he has to stop planting his own books in her store. She gives him back his books and makes him leave. On the way out, Doug drops his books.[2][3]
  • Doug returns to his workshop and locks the door before writing code on his computer. He then walks to his stool, but is scared by Loki, who time slips in front of him, causing Doug to drop his books and fall backwards to the ground. Loki then looks down at Doug, telling him what he is about to say will be hard to believe.[2][3]
  • Loki explains to Doug what has been happening, which Doug believes because it is a dream come true and even a plot in his book, The Sons of Yoren. Loki realizes that Doug is a writer, meaning he is no help to Loki. Doug explains he is also a scientist, but quit his job to write full time. Loki asks to stay on track and figure out how he could get back to before the Temporal Loom exploded, but Doug says it is impossible.[2][3]
  • Doug Left Loki Right

A.D. Doug and Loki talk about Time Slipping

Loki gets confused, so Doug explains that he time traveled in a place without time, which is impossible, so going back to a place that does not exist anymore is equally impossible and therefore Loki could do it. Doug explains that he needs to learn how to control his time slipping. In order to do that, Loki needs to find why he wants to. Loki explains that he needs to get the Time Variance Authority back to stop a coming threat. Doug tells Loki to center on that. Loki tries it, only to make a fool of himself when it does not work.[2][3]
  • Loki Time Slip Fail

    Loki fails to time slip

Frustrated, Loki tries to find a solution in equations, but gets interrupted when Doug shocks him with a taser and concludes that pain does not set his time slipping off. He then sacres him, which also fails. Loki then tells him to forget about time slipping and wants to learn the science way. Doug claims that the TVA could maybe does exist, but in a different time. Doug demonstrates by giving Loki a mug and putting pens in it, showing that if he were to get back to the TVA, he would have to have everyone who was at the destruction back in the same room together.[2][3]
  • Doug explains that it still would not work since they do not have a TemPad. Loki asks if Doug could create one, but he does not think so as he does not know what a TemPad is. Loki then takes a copy of the Time Variance Authority Official Handbook out of his jacket and gives it to Doug, as it contained all the information. Loki then time slips, leaving Doug to start work on making a TemPad.[2][3]

1995[]

July[]

23rd[]

August[]

7th[]

  • A.D. Doug's wife decides to divorce him, worsening Doug's depression.[2][3]

22nd[]

  • A.D. Doug manages to pull himself out of his depression enough to resume work on building a TemPad.[2][3]

1996[]

May[]

21st[]

  • A.D. Doug finishes working on his TemPad and travels to Loki in 2022 to tell him.[2][3]
  • Search for the TVA Personnel Variants:
  • Everyone waits around for Loki while Morris asks Doug questions about the TemPad, planning to use it for his own gain. Don attempts to sell a jet ski to Willis. Loki returns, saying that he made a mistake and everyone can go home. Don gets mad and confused at the ordeal as he was plucked from his life. Loki apologizes, saying that he was too obsessed with what he wanted. Morris asks if he needs to go back to exactly where he was and Doug asks about the Time Variance Authority. Loki says they are fine without it.[2][3]
  • Suddenly, Sylvie arrives, saying that her branch has died, wanting to do something. Loki says that they could go back to the TVA with Sylie having returned. Doug gets excited and says they have to get everyone's Temporal Aura on the TemPad, only to turn around and see it has disappeared. They immediately suspect Morris, only for him to start spaghettifying before their eyes.[2][3]
  • AD Doug Spaghettification

    A.D. Doug dies

Loki watches as Doug dies, then Don, who tries to run back to his kids, then Willis and finally Sylvie, who says there is no where to go. Loki watches as strands of the timeline rip apart around him as he hears voices. He reaches out his hands trying to do anything but die.[2][3]
  • Loki time slips to moments before Sylvie's spaghettification and realizes he controlled his time slipping.[2][3]
  • Suddenly, Loki time slips and finds himself sitting back down at the workshop with everyone alive, having gone back to Sylvie's arrival. He exclaims that he succeeded at controlling his time slipping and tells Doug he needed to realize who he is fighting for. He declares that he can rewrite the story and time slips away, back to the TVA.[2][3]

  • Loki later time slips back to right before Sylvie's spaghettification and stops time. A confused Sylvie asks what is happening and Loki explains that he learned how to time slip and brought them outside time. He tells Sylvie what he has learned, that the Multiverse cannot be freed because the Temporal Loom has to keep branches in tact and without the loom, the Multiverse dies anyways. So no matter what, He Who Remains wins. The only option is to stop Sylvie from killing He Who Remains.[2][3]
  • Loki and Sylvie Talk Outside Time

Loki seeks advice from Sylvie Laufeydottir

Sylvie gets close to Loki, telling him she is not giving him her blessing to kill her. Loki then asks what to do as it is the Sacred Timeline or nothing. Sylvie brings up all of the death and destruction on the Sacred Timeline and asks if Loki wants to be the god to take away people's free will just for that. Loki says that it does not matter if everyone is dead, but Sylvie argues that he would just be replacing one nightmare with another. She reminds Loki that she has been in apocalypses and knows that sometimes it is okay to destroy something. Loki then realizes what he has to do and says that that is okay only if you can replace it with something better. He then time slips away, allowing the universe to spaghettify.[2][3]

Debt of Honor by Tom Clancy is on bookshelves, suggesting that Doug and Loki meet after the book's release on August 17, 1994. This places these events on approximately October 24, 1994, the midpoint between August 17, 1994 and December 31, 1994. Doug then says that it took him "19 months" to finish the TemPad, which could refer to an exact 19 months, so May 24, 1996, or more generally during May 1996, so approximately May 16, 1996. A weighted average of these two dates places the gathering of all the variants on approximately May 21, 1996. Doug also notes that during this time, he took a one-month break from working due to losing his job and his wife divorcing him. Doug getting fired, and consequently the start of this break, can be approximated to half a month prior to the midpoint of the time working, July 23, 1995. His divorce can be approximated to the midpoint of the month-long break, August 7, and he can be taken to have resumed working on August 22, 1995.
