It shows that Marvel is becoming desperate at this point. These characters need to be left alone, not shoehorned into another franchise that already has a trillion characters. The only thing that has worked for the MCU so far is bringing back popular characters, and they're going to use this formula until it is bled dry. The worst part about all of this is that it works; people pay to see characters they love come back against all odds, and honestly I can't blame them. I just wish some more effort would be put into creating new stories with fresh faces.
And don't get me wrong, we're getting a little that bit of that, most recently with Thunderbolts. However, Thunderbolts has been one of the few examples where new characters have worked on screen. I'm going to need a lot more of that.
As Xandermcc pointed out, creating a more black-and-white scenario would create a far less interesting situation for Walker. Frankly, it seems pretty silly to complain about a plot point because it created a debate in the fandom. If anything, I would prefer characters to create discussion because that means that there was depth to their development in the narrative.
Not really. I feel like their story came to a satisfying conclusion in Guardians 3, so bringing them back would cheapen that conclusion. I'm not against a cameo or two, but bringing their characters back for some more major roles seems unnecessary.
The correct answer is The Avengers. The iconic scenes that came out of that film will last the test of time.
Endgame has a lot of great scenes, but none of them are quite succinct as the Avenger's memorable scenes are, particularly the one where the team assembles for the first time.
Yeah, The Avengers being assembled off screen wouldn't make a lot of sense. I honestly don't think the writing team would be dumb enough to do that, but if they do take that route that would be a major waste of potential.
I like your list, I'd say that's a pretty good possibility. I really don't know what Thor's role in the MCU is going to be going forward, and Hulk is also a bit of an enigma, but the rest of those characters will definitely be there. Although I'm guessing the team will just have more people in general.
That's very interesting.
@IronWidowMaikuB My apologies, I must have misread your comment. Although I would still argue that the writing for both Age of Ultron and Ant-Man were much better. Maybe the rest of the phase two films are in the same ballpark.
Most of you brought up the point that the Sentry was, in fact, a product of a super soldier serum, which is a good point. How a serum could do that to anyone or make anyone that powerful is another discussion, but this is a superhero movie so I won't harp over it.
That being said, my original point still remains. This guy is still way too powerful for a bunch of mercenaries with guns to realistically deal with. All well and good to make the film about their own inner demons, and like I said, I had no issue with the characters and how they were portrayed. But if we're going for an entertaining action film here, I just don't see why you wouldn't just create a threat that the heroes could actually take down.
@MarvelSharky Yeah, I mean, that's an appeal to majority, which isn't an argument. There's plenty of content that the masses enjoy that I think are objectively awful, even if Thunderbolts doesn't fall into that specific camp.
I just thought of the plot was so clearly a misfit for the characters. A storyline involving a character as powerful as the Sentry would be more fitting for a hero like Doctor Strange, or Thor. Placing these fairly ordinary heroes in this context doesn't make a lot of sense, not because they're not a match for him (since that almost always ends up being the case anyway), but because they're not even in the same ballpark. A film involving a conflict with a crime organization, or even a retread into familiar territory with something like a super soldier threat, would have been a much better fit. The characters would have been utilized more efficiently in that scenario, and would have also provided plenty of great action scenes. I just don't understand why the writers took the route they did.
@IronWidowMaikuB Claiming that Thunderbolts is no different than the Winter Soldier is simply insane. You've got to do some sort of comparison analysis, because I would love to hear how they have even close to the same level of depth.
As for the therapy being for Yelena as well, that's all well and good, but my main issue is with the plot, and the relevance that moment had to the plot was to prevent Sentry from doing whatever he was doing, thereby releasing his alter ego? In essence, the only two things the Thunderbolts did that had a significant impact on the plot were to free Bob from his containment chamber, and then to hug him out of his... whatever he was doing. I just still think it's such a waste of what the characters could have done.
Fantastic four looks like it could be a breath of fresh air. If that film somehow turns out to be really bad, then I think the MCU will be in a lot of trouble.
The endgame to all of this (no pun intended) is Doomsday. If that turns out to be really good, nothing else will matter. But if it sucks - or more importantly, if it does poorly at the box office - then Marvel is done. I can see them going the DCEU route after that.
Pretty much. Deadpool and Wolverine has been the best phase 5 film for me so far, but it's still really just a love letter to the fans. I wouldn't call it a top-notch film by any stretch of the imagination.
Go watch Thunderbolts. You'll probably disagree with me, and that's fine. My standards are a little different than a lot of people, especially when it comes to Marvel. While I am looking for an interesting movie, I also want some concurrency between films similar to what the Infinity saga had, and I also want the vibe to align with the characters that are in play. Thunderbolts didn't do either of those things well.
Don't get me wrong, I liked Thunderbolts, I just found it to be very disappointing. I probably won't rewatch it because there was almost no depth to it whatsoever, but if I were given the choice between this and a bunch of other mediocre movies on an airplane, I'm picking Thunderbolts every time. It's still Marvel, and the characters are great in this. That alone would earn the film a 6 out of 10 at least for me.
I wouldn't say distrust, but Thunderbolts made it clear to me that the MCU is still a shadow of its former self. I still get the feeling that the execs are grasping at straws here in an attempt to rebuild the franchise, but there's still so much uncertainty about which direction the universe is going to go. I can feel that the inklings of a plan are starting to show up with the fantastic four and doomsday, but with all the messiness of the past two phases, I need my trust to be built back.
Maybe I am saying distrust, I don't know. I'm just seeing subpar after subpar Marvel movie compared to films from the Infinity Saga, especially phase three.
I found Thunderbolts to be a waste of potential, and very underwhelming. These characters are meant to be a hand-to-hand fighters, not therapists for a Superman knockoff. The banter was great, and the characters are compelling, but overall this was a disappointment.
To break it down into film composition terms, the characters were great, but the writing was pretty bad. And this is coming from someone who was in the target audience for this type of film.
Swap Ant-Man and Captain America, and you have my ranking.
Looks like the Steelers don't want any good players for this season.
Love it.
Warriors definitely deserved that final win. The entire team stepped up to counter the excellent defense of the Rockets.
Just finally saw Brave New World. Thought it was mildly entertaining, but very basic and uninspired. Far from the worst Marvel movie, but also far from the best.
I tend to prefer content to stay away from universal threats, cuz that can get old real fast. However, as other people have pointed out, it doesn't really matter to me as long as I care about the characters.
I kind of dug the previous Tron, as cheesy as it was.
Wth is that title.
