In The Avengers why would Thanos risk losing the Mind Stone by giving it to loki

In multiple scenes throughout Avengers 1 we see the scepter change between the short version with the two sharp bits but then it goes and changes, getting three sharp bits and is almost as tall as Loki. whats up with that?
I just changed the sceptres powers to the ones I know are confirmed but where not on here two to be specific it can grant sentience as shown with vision and ultron and also being able to grant powers as shown by quicksilver and scarlet witch

<p>If someone has a source where Kevin Feige or anyone else in a position of authority actually calls it an infinity stone, that would be proof. Otherwise can we just acknowlege that no one knows what it really is?

<p>The chitauri scepter's glowing jewel is the wrong colour to be the mind stone. I postulate that it is not this blue gem, but is actually the rest of the scepter that could be the mind stone. We know that the stone isn't necessarily a gem, rather it was described as an "ingot" by the collector, which could suggest metal. Furthermore, the staff is predominantly gold in colour, which is a colour of infinity stone yet to be seen, but confirmed to exist by the collector. I think the blue stone is in fact just a normal tesseract powered weapon node, added for combat, but not an integral part of its ability to control minds. As for why Thanos would give it to Loki, well he was expecting to get it back. A gamble to get the tesseract. He gives it to Loki, Loki recovers the cube and gives both back to thanos, double or nothing. And not knowing earth had any chance of defending itself, he lost it. This means that they have introduced an infinity stone that didn't by chance originate on earth like the tesseract, and has ended up there on purpose, which is a good excuse for them to end up together.
