It’s just tiring when 90% of what the mcu uses the multiverse for is bringing back old versions of characters
The Spider-Verse movies, by contrast, focus more on new variants or adaptions of variants from the comics. There’s some older versions of Spider-Man, but not a ton, and they’re all just cameos.
The Spider-Verse also is still a new concept and a pretty new series so that they don't have alot to grab that would make sense.
Plus, this give these characters a chance to be written off good unlike what happen with Fox.
Lastly, there's a massive reason why the MCU don't use comic based characters and that cause they can't. It's going to look weird when you see a cartoon version of Natasha standing next to Yelena or a Cartoon version of Steve standing next to Sam and Bucky.
Who says they have to be in a cartoon style? I don’t mean literally bringing in the exact comic versions, I mean adapting them.
Even if they were the same versions from the comics, they could still be put into live action. Across The Spider-Verse included multiple comic characters that were adapted into the 3D style of the movie.
lol hottake the whole purpose is to have Tobey and Hugh meet they planned it all the way back in 2002 and then again in 2008 with that iron man alternate take of the post credit scene. I 100 percent bet the teaser poster of secret wars will be the X-men and spider logos clashing with the avengers logos
Spider-Verse also does the thing you call negative nostalgia bait. Prowler in Across the Spider-Verse played by Donald Glover? Not only while Glover's a reference to Miles's origins, he also played Aaron Davis in Spider-Man Homecoming in the MCU. That was an MCU appearance. So were multiple references to previous media like TASM, Spectacular, the 60s Spider-Man cartoon TWICE, and many more.
The comics versions of characters literally happens too. You act like we only have some pre-established adaptation teaming up with the MCU as if we got an entire Fantastic Four movie that isn't a sequel to any of the adaptations that came before. As if Deadpool didn't have Hugh play multiple versions from comics that were never even adapted, or featuring a Gambit that never even got to appear the first time.
We are getting the X-Men in the future. A film starring an entirely new adaptation of the team is coming in the post-Secret Wars timeline when the worlds merge. This is just the setup because the multiverse is a cool way to bring these past players back, but like I said before, they aren't the only ones. The Fantastic Four, Gambit, Binary, even our main villain Doctor Doom. All of which are new doppelgangers of other iconic Marvel players.
Yay @Xandermcc i agree secret wars is suppose to celebrate significant marvel history it’s literally the collision of the fox marvel films, sony spiderverse and the infinity saga all into one mcu finale
Indeed. And it's not built on nostalgia. It's also based on the continued stories of these characters and how these characters can help the other characters in the future. As shown by Andrew's Spidey or the Deadpool films which did not get to finish their trilogy and now partially do.
It shows that Marvel is becoming desperate at this point. These characters need to be left alone, not shoehorned into another franchise that already has a trillion characters. The only thing that has worked for the MCU so far is bringing back popular characters, and they're going to use this formula until it is bled dry. The worst part about all of this is that it works; people pay to see characters they love come back against all odds, and honestly I can't blame them. I just wish some more effort would be put into creating new stories with fresh faces.
And don't get me wrong, we're getting a little that bit of that, most recently with Thunderbolts. However, Thunderbolts has been one of the few examples where new characters have worked on screen. I'm going to need a lot more of that.
What do you think?
