Whenever X-Men make their official appearances in MCU (maybe Avengers: Secret Wars). Wanting to be new, unique and different from rather basic and uninspired lineups fan’s have created is too similar to either 90s animated series or Claremont run. Adding Mirage to the main team would have provided something different to other X-Men adaptations and having Mirage being on the main team instead of New Mutants (more a veteran than being a teenager) helped the MCU X-Men stay out of previous incarnations from movies, cartoons and video games.
X-Men never saw a proper live-action adaptation highlighting the relationships and interactions between each other except for Logan. Seeing Cyclops talk to Storm in a friendly manner or Colossus interacting with Nightcrawler or Logan trying to push Gambit into making things clear with Rogue would actually be welcome. We need a classic X-men story and a familiar feeling.
I'd love Wolverine to appear, don't get me wrong! But I'd almost rather he be a more mellow presence, more in a mentorship role than the central figure (Especially as Cyclops needs a lot more attention).
That was always a problem with the X-Men movies; you'd have like two characters front and center and everyone else is just supporting instead of an ensemble, which is what's worked for the MCU historically. If they’d introduce too many characters in one film, none of them are going to get enough screen time for people to care about them.
I'd keep it to a slim roster of 9-10 (not too big, Beast or Emma stay behind at the school until seems his in action) for the opening act allows audiences (old/new) get to known characters with some familiarity so Marvel Studios is not trying to retold while origins of the mutant’s again.
