Thanos is not an Eternal, therefore that isn’t “nerfing” as much as it is changing the character completely. And you don’t know that the Celestials are going to be nerfed, they’re already created entire ecosystems and planets.

There's no reason assume Thanos ISN'T an Eternal. He's one in the comics.
