In the comics after Maya's initial introduction and eventual time with the New Avengers, Maya communicated with Steven Grant when he was interested in Maya through a text to speech option and vice versa. And compared to just speaking, this is a factor the MCU has some bit of history for as well. Given the actress's mechanical leg being integrated into the story of Maya herself.

Right, but I can't see why he WOULD. We're talking about a blind kid who had to learn Braille and how to use a white cane. Then he went through law school. I would find it very convenient for him to casually mention, "Oh, yeah, I took ASL as an elective at Columbia Law School." Especially because he's trying to keep his abilities a secret from most of the world. And it wouldn't make sense for him to meet Maya and then decide to take a crash-course in ASL and suddenly be able to understand it fluently in a short amount of time. I'm hoping they go with assistive technology on this one. It would make more sense.
