Pretty satisfying ending. I've had mixed feelings toward this whole show, and the finale was by no means perfect, but it wasn't a bad closing. Although, I'm a bit irritated they just handed us Mad Titan Gamora and Sakaaran Iron Man without context...
I wasn’t overly thrilled with the episode, but I’m not a huge action genre fan, and the majority of this episode was the fight against Ultron. I was hoping for more interaction and tension between the team and the Watcher. I also thought that the fight between Batroc and Carter was really slow compared to the one from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
I will say, I loved the designs for Doctor Strange’s armor spell on the characters, and the animation of the scene between Zola and Ultron was really cool.
What If...? Nexus Events
1. Peggy Carter refusing to go to the booth
2. Yondu outsourcing the assignment of the abduction of Peter Quill to Kraglin and Taserface
3. Hope van Dyne joining S.H.I.E.L.D.
4. Dr. Christine Palmer accepting Doctor Strange's invitation to the Gala
5. Janet van Dyne contracting a quantum virus while she was stranded in the quantum realm
6. Erik Killmonger uncovering Obadiah Stane's plan to assassinate Tony Stark
7. Odin returning baby Loki to Laufey and The Frost Giants
8. Ultron successfully transferring his consciousness into Vision
9. The Watcher assembling the Guardians of the Multiverse.
The Watcher became the cosmic version of Nick Fury. Tony Stark didn't die but still wasn't chosen. Erik Killmonger was chosen despite killing another variant of Tony Stark. Star-Lord of the sacred timeline became friends with T'Challa Star-Lord.
AND
ULTRON VS ZOLA VS KILLMONGER
I kinda wish they kept the Tony on Sakarr episode to make the finale more complete. It was amazing nonetheless, and I'm hyped for the stories in Season 2!
It was a weird final episode. But it wasn't bad in any way. Lets see.
Why that team of -for some- little powered individuals out of all possible cosmic entities? I have no idea. Why can't Ultron just snap everyone fighting him, if not every lifeform in each galaxy one after the other? I have no idea. Altogether, What If...? is my first disappointment with Marvel Studios' output. Remembering the What If...? comics I read long ago, the concept could have been used in a much better manner IMHO, with a little less humor and more character-oriented (vs end of the world) storylines.
I didn't find the stories particularly engaging, several of the endings were somewhat confusing, multiversal rules aren't much clearer now than before, nor is the connection to Loki/Kang. And for the first time, it felt like these stories didn't matter much, as if they'll just be an unnecessary distraction in any in-universe chronological order rewatch. There may be a payoff at some point in the future, though, but so far, I fail to see the point.
Now both audience and critics scores on Rotten Tomatoes are really high, so I realize it's probably just me, I may have missed something and the show is probably better than it felt to me. But still...
I wonder if Zola's inclusion in the show is to set up the main one's return, maybe in Cap 4?
I know that originally season one was going to have 10 episodes instead of 9, so was the episode they removed going to be the one with the Gamora from this episode?
They just moved it to season 2. We're still gonna get that episode.
