I just read this article on the upcoming movie Eternals, and I saw that they are finally bringing LGBTQ+ characters into the MCU! I’m so happy! What do you all think?

@Itlosz Agreed. Likewise, I don't know a single person - black, white or otherwise - who doesn't love Sam as CA or doesn't mourn the loss of Chadwick Boseman the same way they did Heath Ledger because of the loss of a phenomenal talent and special soul... the key here is spending LESS time focused on race, gender, sexual preference and other things that may divide us and MORE time on hope, fear, fallibility and redemption... those things which have the capability to unite us. I'm all for more LGBTQ+ characters in film or television in general, but putting them there just to prove how 'diverse' you are - or worse yet, retconning established straight characters as gay in an effort to 'even things up' - is missing the forest for the trees and ultimately disrespecting the very groups you claim to champion imho...
I'm a HUGE reaction video person, I watch way too many of them to be honest, and the thing that always strikes me is how common it is to see POC invested beyond imagining in shows with predominantly white casts (like Game of Thrones or earlier Marvel films), or female reactors invested in male characters... and just as importantly, it runs the other way as well. These are FANS, not activists, and they appreciate and value great characters and great writing above checking the various representation boxes to see whether or not the film meets some social justice criteria... these are fans, and they should be the ones that the studios concern themselves with. THEY are the ones who are going to go see the movie five times in theaters, going to buy the t-shirt and the lunchbox and spend hours discussing and promoting the property online... not see it once and then use it as a rallying flag or whipping boy on social media for whatever particular political viewpoint they might embrace.
Well, his husband will die in the show, so, it won’t be that important anyways... I am excited to see how his character is, and not define him on his sexual preference.
I understand not defining the characters as LGBTQ+ or just as “gay” but also I don’t think you understand how big of a moment this is for us people in the LGBTQ community
A great example is in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. One of the main characters, Deet, has two fathers, Lath'N and Mitjan. It doesn't get into the particulars of how this little family unit came to be, because it's not needed. They just present it to you and trust you to go with it.
This also really doesn’t affect people who are straight or cisgender, because you have always had someone in the movies to look up too and someone who is like you, but people in the LGBTQ community have never really got to have that experience. The only LGBTQ characters have only had a small cameo or have never actually been confirmed as LGBTQ. Also saying you support the LGBTQ community or are apart of it and posting about it does not mean you are favoriting anyone or discriminating. As a bisexual, bigender person, it will be nice to know that I can see someone on screen who relates to me. And no this does not mean I hate against heterosexual or cisgender people.
Yes, I do agree a person of the LGBTQ community shouldn’t be solely defined because they are LGBTQ, but I also do not think that we should completely ignore it either. It is important to realize that characters of LGBTQ have never had a big standing in the MCU, and it shows how we have progressed from when LGBTQ were killed for being who they are. It should not define them, but we should at least acknowledge that it is there.
Also I would like to say @Fiona225 that what you are saying feels slightly offensive and homophobic by saying that as a LGBTQ person, I don’t like straight people and that just because someone posts about the LGBTQ community, automatically makes them a hater to straight people.
Agreed.
“I understand not defining the characters as LGBTQ+ or just as “gay” but also I don’t think you understand how big of a moment this is for us people in the LGBTQ community”.
I fully support the LGBTQ+ community (I’m in it) and I think that unless they make their Sole identity being LGBT+ then it’s a step in the right direction. However, I highly doubt marvel would do that as they know how much this means.
[Hi, I’m Livvy! I’m new on this wiki, but I’m on the TSC, and THG wiki. I go by she/ her/ they/ them pronouns!)
I think you may be misunderstanding something or misattributing something to me because I would never and have never said anything like that. To suggest that all people in a particular group would think or feel, much less do or say something because of their sexual preference, gender, skin color or ethnicity is exactly the opposite of the argument that I was making. I would NEVER expect you to do or say anything nor to like or dislike anyone because you were a LGBTQ person... your thoughts and feelings are your own and no one else's.
If you can find an example of me suggesting or implying what you say anywhere in this thread or in any other, please point it out to me so that I can correct or clarify it.
Also, as an aside, in your post above you say that LGBTQ+ people haven't had anyone they can relate to or look up to, which is why this is so meaningful... and to that I say that may be true... but only if the only way you can look up to or relate to a person is if they're LGBTQ+, and I don't think that's true for a moment. I think you - and pretty much everyone else - can relate to kindness, fear, discrimination, hope, compassion, self-doubt and a great many other things that are in no way exclusive to people of one community or another, and its a mistake to suggest that only cis people can relate to cis people, and only non-cis people can relate to non-cis people... that is the very danger I warn against, being defined by one aspect of yourself or defining others in the same fashion, when we are all a myriad of wondrous variety and contradiction that couldn't possibly be narrowed down to a litany of consonants, no matter how long we make them. If a person has to look like us or think like us for us to have empathy for them, then we have already started down the wrong path.
I have no energy right now, and I am not going to waste what little energy I have it trying to tell you why this is so important and how you are misinterpreting what I am saying because it will never change what you see @Fiona225
Fair enough. Could you at least show me a single example of my saying what you claimed that I said? Everyone should be free to engage in discourse or not as they see fit, but making a direct false accusation is another thing entirely... again, if you can even show me an example where someone might misinterpret something I said this way, I'd be happy to correct or clarify it.
Also I would like to say @Fiona225 that what you are saying feels slightly offensive and homophobic by saying that as a LGBTQ person, I don’t like straight people and that just because someone posts about the LGBTQ community, automatically makes them a hater to straight people.
Earlier on in your post, you said that you didn’t support LGBTQ+ people as it was “due to your religion”.
However, now you have edited your post and deleted that sentence.
Blackpanther is saying that: yes, LGBTQ+ people have some representation but it’s not enough to “normalise” it. For those characters that LGBTQ+ it is often portrayed as their only character trait or hobby.
Me: So, I (for one) would like more accurate representation rather than a LGBTQ+ person in the media being obsessed with the fact that they’re LGBTQ+. Being LGBTQ+ is important to represent but it’s not the only character trait. On the other hand, i by no way am trying to shame members of the LGBTQ+ community if they Do make that part of their character traits. That’s their decision to make but we need more accurate representation.
Could you please (if you feel comfortable) reply to this. Do you support the LGBTQ+ community?
(Now, I’m in no way trying to make you feel bad about yourself, or trying to shame you. I just needed to share my opinions on this matter, addressing what you said and why accurate representation is so important.)
What do you think?
