Strange choice. I mean, wouldn't it make more sense to either have a bigger character as a gay person, or have a gay person from the comics?

I don't see the issue. What's wrong with changing the main character to be gay? Because, I don't know, they can and because it doesn't truly affect the core of the character. I would feel a bit weird for the sexual orientation of a big character, lets say, Magneto or Wolverine to change, but minor characters, like Iceman, I'd be totally open (Iceman's homossexuality is directly supported by the comics, which only make it more likely to appear in future reincarnations of the character).

Unless the movie features sex scene, it's really pointless what sexual orientation a character is.

Well... fair... but people shouldn't shy out for placing it there. Homossexuality, although a minority, shouldn't be treated as one. Also, you don't need sex scenes to make the protagonist or an important person as an homossexual throughout the movie. As much corny the movie is... Love, Simon is just a perfect example... it involves an homossexual character, and sex scenes are never shown or implied... but the sexual orientation is relevant, specially if it drives the story. I get it... place it down just because of diversity is a bit pointless in that sense... but its a real thing, not an alien thing, so people shouldn't shy out of that.

Honestly I don't care. For me it doesn't make anything different! If a character in it is gay then whatever. I do think that there is a lot of forced diversity in movies these days which is a bit annoying as it makes me think studios are scared that there going to be called homophobic or racist if they don't were as actually people who aren't idiots actually don't care. But you know whatever good for them I suppose 😂
