<p>I think Marvel is marketing GOTG to kids a little more than the other films especially because of Rocket Racoon and Groot ( the merchandising should do pretty well ). <p>@Agent Sci-Fi - Thank you for the compliment.  And I agree, Marvel is trying to sell this as kid-friendly (hence the goofball trailers and Vin Diesel's testimony) so it can get that 150 million budget back and then some.  @TomasDersken - a well put together trailer highlighting the good parts is no guarantee the whole movie is good.  I'm not a fan because the premise of the tree and the raccoon is ridiculous to me.  Also, anyone who criticizes a Marvel movie is not a DC fanboy.  The acid test will be critics and the people who see an early showing of the complete movie and they give their opinions before opening night.  That's when you really see true reactions. </p>

<p>As for plans for Marvel movies going to 2028, that's hubris on the studio's part.  Apparently Marvel has Nostradamus on the payroll for it knows people will want to see their brand of entertainment 14 years from now.  Times change and people's taste change.  With all the comic book movies coming out in the next TWO years there's a danger of franchise fatigue.  The new Transformers numbers are healthy, but there are still signs of audience burnout from these films.   You can only go so far for so long before your luck runs out.   The Marvel label does not guarantee big box office returns (see Daredevil and Elektra). That makes GotG more of a gamble.  </p>

<p>And how do you know it is Hubris. For all we (the public) knows they have plans untill 2028. And I cant wait for those 28 movies (hopefully more) to come. Super Hero movies have been a thing for 40/50 years. Comic books for the double amount of years. So, mwah, Superhero movies will work aslnog as comic books work.  </p><p>And btw, Daredevil and ELektra arent from marvel. It may have been the Marvel label, but not Marvel. It was 20th century fox. SO No, that for me isn't an argument.  </p><p>And there by there is a huge difference between GOTH and Daredevil and Elektra. It is part of a big universe and it is an important part of this universe. Daredevil and Elektra were not. </p>

<p>@TomasDerksen - one needs to keep in mind Marvel Studios is not making movies to please ONLY Marvel comic book fans. They make movies to appeal to a broad audience, i.e., people that are not into comics as well. Not everyone lives for Comic Con or lives to get the latest comic book that comes out, and that's the demographic Marvel has to reach too.   Marvel is out to make money, just like every other movie studio.  That's why it's doing the pre-screens, the interviews, and other heavy promoting on a risky project.  Comic book movies tanked at the box office over the years:  Howard the Duck, Green Latern, Superman IV, Sucker Punch, Batman and Robin.  Kevin Feige co-produced Darevil and Elektra and they bombed on his watch.  Comic book movies are crap shoots and they are not guaranteed successes, no matter how "important to the universe" it sells itself to be.  Marvel is not perfect; it can still knock out a bad movie.  If the critics and word of mouth from movie goers eviserate GotG Marvel will need to re-think its strategy. </p>

<p>It's not like movies like this haven't been successful before. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has walking and talking trees and it is the 8th highest grossing film of all time. Alice in Wonderland has talking animals and it is the 16th highest grossing film of all time. Avatar has blue aliens and it is the highest grossing film in history. All these movies made over a billion dollars. Hell most of the 50 highest grossing movies have some kind of fantasy or scifi element. </p>

<p>That is true, they do not focus only on Marvel Comic Fans. HEll, I am not even a marvel comic fan. Because I am not a comic book fan at all. The only comic books I have read are things like: Astrix and Obelix, Tin Tin, Spike and Suzy. </p><p>And yeah, Lowrider throws a great argument as well. </p>

<p>@Turtletrekker -  the review you cite is based on NINE MINUTES of film, and of course Marvel is going to put up its best bits to hook people into paying full price to see the movie.  The remaining 151 minutes could be junk.  I'll wait for critics and people who go the early showings - those who see the WHOLE MOVIE.  @Lowridere95a10 - the movies you cited were successful not solely for the characters but for the storytelling and the good acting.  GotG still looks like space junk to me. </p>
